146 Grain Speer jacketed SWC HP 357
One of the earlier threads was asking about the 146 grain Speer 3/4 jacketed SWC HP's that are no longer made. I was clearing out some old reloads of mine and shot this 10 shot group at 25 yards standing two hands without a rest. The loads where about 17.5 grains of W296. I usually don't shoot full power loads but these shoot pretty well. Could not use photo bucket so lets see how the photo uploads.

Yep, Photobucket became a pay-to-play site a couple of years ago, breaking a gajillion photo links all across the internet. Your photo showed up just fine for me, nice shooting! The old Speer semi-jacketed SWC-HP had one real issue, that was jacket separation, usually when using very light reloads with the jacket remaining in the barrel.

The Speer 3/4 jacket bullets were my favorites. Used a lot of the .357 146 & 160 grain and .44 225 and 240 grain bullets. Shot very well, never had issues. Still have a few left in the loading drawer.

The revolver was my 27-2 with a 5 inch barrel. If I was to load these bullets again for this gun I would drop the load by at least a grain of power as it seems like a lot of the powder is being burned after the bullet has left the barrel. The muzzle flash and blast is quite impressive.

The last time I checked out the 146 in the 357 Magnum, the net with Hodgdon's data started out with 15.5 grs of w296.
Check it out to make sure but I can see why that 17.5 gr load is a Dragon.

I’ve been saving the last boxes of these for a couple of years. I may just load them both, fire one and save the last for a rainy day. Unless I find them again at a gun show or on GB.

Have about 2 doz of the 146's and a half a box of the 160's left. Price sticker on the 146's is still legible, and is $4.23. Purchased them at a True Value Hardware. As to loads, my Speer #11 shows starting load of 16.5grs 296 and max of 18.5. With the 160's it's from 15.0 to 17.0. Cases used were Speer, primers CCI 550, Gun used was a 6" Security Six.

He probably loaded them back when the Speer# 9 was still current & 18.0gr/W296 was the listed max. & magnums were MAGNUMS.
