Default So what happend to Solo 1000?

Some 2-3 years ago I stumbled on a highly recommended 9mm load on a IDPA forum that used Solo 1000. My local shop had a pound so I gave it a try. What I found was a load that was SUPER soft shooting and plenty accurate enough for the range work I do. Problem is, I haven't been able to find another grain of it locally. No one will even order it for me. Any thoughts or experience? Is it out of production?

Years ago, I loved that company for its powders.

Great for 12 Ga. trap loads and my revolvers.

Then the bottles got smaller and the prices BIGGER !!

Just had to let it go.

Out of stock at both places and a few more. Even Powder Valley.

It goes a long way in 9mm. I'd be happy to splurge on a 4 or 8 # can. :-)

Actually no, I checked Brownell's, Midway, Midsouth, Natchez and Powder Valley and none of them showed it in stock. Looks like Solo1000 is unobtanium right now.

I have a pound of it, but it is probably over 25 years old. I used it only for shotshells, no experience with it for handgun loads.

I used to buy, sell and use a lot of Solo 1000 and even Solo 1250. Used to get it in 25 lb jugs. It was a good powder for shot shells and lighter handgun loads. Checked the Accurate site. Nothing about it being discontinued

I seem to remember reading that it's changed at least four times over the years as the manufacturing plants have changed. If anyone has older stuff, you might want to chrono it and develop loads like you are loading a new powder.

Maybe someone can clarify?

Thumbs up

I had a 1# bottle of it just cuz. I load 38 Short Colt ammo with 135 gr. coated lead for steel shooting. When Vihtavouri N310 was scarce i used the Solo 1000 until it too was gone. Worked well but more dirty and greasy than N310.....which Brownells does have sometimes.

I've read it could vary a bit from batch to batch. If I find it, I'll buy a 4 or 8# jug and retest my loads. Meanwhile, I have plenty of other powders to fall back on. I just happened to like this particular powder for 9mm.

Honestly I wouldnt bother. Its been inconsistent lot to lot. Plus its one of those powders that disappears for a couple years, the you find it, then you cant.
Lots of as good or better powders that seem to always be readily available.
For action pistol, whether 9mm minor or 40 major, Tighgroup does it all other than generate a bit of smoke with moly coated bullets and seems to always be available.
Alliant SPort Pistol seems like a winner as well, but also seems to made of unobtanium.

I contacted Western Powders and asked if it had been discontinued. This was the reply.

"It has not been discontinued but we are having problems getting it to come in under spec for canister powder. We have not given up but I do not know when it will be available again. Sherri"

Hopefully whoever is making it for them gets a batch right soon.

Which means is that its performance varies too much from lot to lot. As I said earlier, I formerly used if for 12 ga. skeet loads. No reason it wouldn't work for many handgun calibers as it is much like Red Dot as I remember. I have used both Red Dot and Green Dot for several handgun calibers.
