Hunting load 625 45 C
I have a 5” 625 chambered in 45 colt. I’m plan to hunt whitetails with it this fall. I’ll be iron sighting, and where I will hunt, shots will be close, 30 yards or less.
What would you guys recommend for a load. I don’t shoot factory ammo, so looking for a load that I load.
Thanks

A 255 gr cast bullet , SWC or RNFP running about 900 fps will do all you want / need . I like to shoot several different loads in my 25-5 , 4" barrel using the above bullet size . I really like 8.0 grs of Ramshot Zip , or HP-38 . I shoot 7.0 grs of 700X , or Red Dot , 9.0 grs of WSF is a real favorite too . 12.5 grs of Blue Dot works well too for a little more power . You will get recommendations using 8.5-9.0 grs Unique as well . Any of the above loads will give you what you are looking for . I cast and size my bullets , .454 . Good Luck , Regards, Paul

Thanks cowboy4ever.
I have many 250 swc and round nose fp cast bullets.
Also have quite a bit of Unique and blue dot on the shelf.

Agree with Paul but I'd recommend a cast bullet no harder than BHN 12. Too many cast bullets sold on the internet are way, way too hard. I shoot a BHN 10 at around 850 fps in my mountain gun and it very accurate and I never have a problem with leading.

What Cowboy says... I prefer the SWC's, either Lyman 454424's or RCBS 270 SAA's. I shot one deer with a RNFP (although it was a 44) behind the shoulder and performance was less than stellar. I had no blood from the point of impact to the spot where I hit him a second time. SWC's have always completely penetrated and leave easy to find blood trails, in my experience.
And I'm one of those 8.5-9.0 gr. of Unique guys.

I too would go with the swc.The wider the flat nose the better it acts in drilling an effective blood drainage channel.
And I like Beemer's observation.So true!
