Default Loading for a 986

I shoot a Walter PPQ Q5 in 9mm. The load I use is 4.1 grains of 231, Federal brass, CCI 500 primers, a 124 grain SNS RN coated bullet with a QAL of 1.125. It is very accurate and mild.

I have been half debating about getting a 5" Smith and Wesson 986 revolver. Lately I’ve been trying to cut down on the number of guns and calibers I shoot in order to simplify my component inventory and improve my reloading efficiency. I have already sold several guns and related reloading equipment including some very accurate 45 Bullseye Match pistols. The only guns I shoot regularly and reload for are the Walter and a 686 SSR in 357 Mag. I enjoy shooting the 686 more than the pistol. I find it more challenging. But I would like to simplify even more. The 986 and 686 are similar.

The 9mm rounds that I load are taper crimped. My 686 357 Mag rounds are roll crimped. Is there an issue with bullets loosing in the cylinder with a taper crimp in a 986 revolver? It may not have the recoil of a 44 Mag, but I’m not sure of the holding power of a taper crimp in even a 9mm revolver. The SNS coated bullets I use do not have a crimp groove as do most 9mm bullets.

I would like the use the same components for both guns if possible.

As always thanks in advance for sharing your experience.

Thumbs up

I don't own a 986 but have a 929, the 8-shot version. I don't know what gun games you might shoot the 986 in but most wheel gunners I shoot with prefer the 8-shooter. One of our local shooters bought the 986 to challenge himself. After campaigning for 2 yrs. with the 986, he quietly began using his new 929.

I have never had a problem with bullet jump in my 929. Also, all factory 9mm ammo is taper crimped. S&W introduced these revolvers for competition using 9mm factory ammo since it is widely available and the cheapest. You will have no problems with bullet jump.

Good shooting to you!

A properly done taper crimp should not give you any jumping problem if appropriatly done.
Mearure the thickness of the brass(should be around 0.010'' for commercial brass)multiply by 2 and add the diam of the bullet.
If the bullet is at say .356'',add 2 times 0.010'' and your taper crimp should come up at 0.376''.
Shot according to that in both revolvers and autos I never ever had a bullet creep forward(I agree hard to do while the round sits in the magazine!)

I don't know if it applies to other 986's, but mine will not shoot coated cast bullets without horrible leading. That said, I have never had any bullet jump with any of the plated 147gr bullets that I have run through it. They are at the upper end of the velocity chart as I bought it for bowling pins.

My 986 never had an issue with the light taper crimps I use in my target ammo. (i.e low to mid power). FWIW, I don't shoot competition but do prefer my 986 to the 929 (which I sold off.)

If you might be thinking of loading some Full loads and not have to worry about bullet creep...

and your die set will roll crimp just a slight amount on a bullet...

you might look into the Sierra Sig Sauer V-Crown that has a cannelure
as well as the Remington Golden Saber with its slight shoulder.
Both can be crimped for a revolver loading to help prevent bullet jump.

The 9mm Sierra runs around $22 for 100 JHP bullets.
The Remington is a little harder to find.

Good shooting.
