Default .44 HBWC

I'm considering joining a poker league next Feb. and was thinking about using my 24-3 6 1/2 for the match.
It's extremely accurate with Keith 255 gr SWC but I would like to try some HBWC before the match. Does anyone know of a source for that type bullet? These will be for reloading I'm not looking for premade ammo.

Before they managed to put themselves out of business, National Bullet offered 190g WC[not hollow base]. Used in a 44 spl and was happy.
If interested, I have some for sale. I believe they're copper flashed.

I would need ay least 500, the match requires 50 rounds and it's 7 weeks long that would be 350 and I'd need some to work up a load and practice.

I just bought a 44 HBWC mold. Had to get on group buy list on another forum to get it. I haven't poured any yet except a few just to see how they pour. 213gr. If anything like 38sp they will add accuracy but you have to drop velocity. All based on 6" or longer S&Ws.

I have considered getting a mold I've got plenty of lead and until Feb.to get the loads worked up.
Velocity is not a issue in these matches just accuracy. they are shot a 5 yds weak hand only, 7 yrs strong hand only and 10 yds free style. I could use one of my model 14s that I have wadcutters loaded for but I though the .44 would give a slight edge because of the larger diameter.

Wad Cutter molds are hard to come by. I was looking for any WC for 44 in 200-210 gr range for several years. The 185gr is most common. Not a lot of choice. Lee is common, I don't use them because I don't like the rounded edges and tumble lube bullets.

NOE molds out of Provo has 44 cal. Wadcutter molds. Also Tom at accurate molds.com has 44 cal wadcutter molds and he will cut you a mold to your specs.

I just looked at the ones spring1271 suggested Matts has 210 gr in solid and hollow base. The hollow base are a little pricey at 121.00 for 500.

Get a 45 cal round ball and a wood mallet and slug the barrel before you order bullets. They need to be .100 -.200 over. My 29 is .429--My Ruger SRH is .430 and my Marlin is .432.

At the yardages your going to be shooting any wc/hbwc will work. Used to swage my own hbwc's for the 44cal's, still have 2 different sets of swaging dies to do so. Been thinning the herd of my molds also, down to these 5

top left: lee 162gr button nosed wc cast from a 6-cavity mold. That mold casts a good bullet with range scrap (.4305"), add the pc and they run .4325".

top center: a custom lee 6-cavity mold that casts a flat nosed 175gr wc that can be seated flush or crimped in either end groove. The end grooves are offset so that you can load the same load in 44mag or 44spl cases and have the same oal and case fill with either case. The mold casts a .4305" bullet with range scrap. pc's at .4325"

top right: That's a nose pour cramer 200gr wc bullet that flat out shoots. The 2-cavity molds casts a .431" bullet with range scrap.

bottom left: A mihec 220gr hbwc cast from a 4-cavity mold. The mold casts .431" bullets with range scrap

bottom right: lyman 429352 245gr wc from a single cavity mold. The mold casts a .4305" bullet from range scrap.

Used to have a 624 with a 6 1/2" bbl, eyes got bad and ended up selling it along with several 44cal wc molds. Don't know about the cylinders on your model 24 but that 624 had .432" cylinders. It needed bullets in the .431"/.432" range to have any accuracy.

Any of those bullets pictured above will easily do everything you need from them and more with 10yds being your longest shot. The big difference is how the 24 fits your hand & trigger control compared to the smaller model 14. Two vastly different revolvers.

I still play around with target loads in a beater 629 that has a reddot on it. Did I mention I really like that 200gr nose pour cramer wc?

Before I would spend $100 on bullets I'd spend $80 on a mold. You can always sell the mold, the bullets after they've been shot. Not so much.

Matt's Bullets. A tad pricey, but quality is excellent. Fast delivery and they'll size them to your specs.
215 Grain Hollow Base Wadcutter (.430) [430-215-HBWC] - $25.50 : Matts Bullets

Second the RimRock. Have used their 200 grain WC in my 29-2 for competition shooting. Great shooting bullet.

If you want a precision hollow base mold, check out mp-molds.com.
They have a .44 hollow base mold that casts at .432 dia. and weighs 214 grains using wheel weight alloy. They are in Slovenia but speak English. LOL I have several of his molds and they’re great.

I have (and like shooting) 185 gr. wad cutters that I get from a guy at a MA gun show. I believe the bullet is from a Lyman 429348 mold (it looks like the pictured profile for that Lyman bullet). Matt's Bullets has them:

185 Grain Wadcutter (.430) [430-185-WC] - $16.00 : Matts Bullets

Western Bullet Co. is a couple bucks cheaper.

George

Matt's hand casts with a ladle . He'll work with you on alloy & sizing . That's why his prices are high . It's been my experience that a swaged HBWC will outshoot a cast HBWC . Have seen it in 6 - 8 handgun calibers .
