Default Help needed - Redding Profile Crimp die

How do you adjust the Redding Profile Crimp (PCD) die for 38/357? The method I知 using, I run a sized/unloaded case up and then turn down the Redding PCD until it touches the case mouth. I remove the case and then I turn the PCD in 1/4 turn, place in a loaded round and begin the crimping process and keep adjusting the PCD until I get the desired taper and roll crimp, but most of the time I知 very close to touching, and at times touch, the shell holder. The taper looks extreme and the roll crimp doesn稚 appear too significant.

Your suggestions are appreciated!

I adjust mine with a loaded round with the bullet seated to the proper depth in the case. You need the support of the bullet to get a proper setting on the PCD. I can about guaranty that you have too much crimp with setting it the way you are.

Folks, they sent me a Taper Crimp die rather than the Profile Crimp die! The box says it is a Profile Crimp die but the etching on the die says Taper Crimp! No wonder I was not getting the right crimp! I’m awaiting Brownells Customer Service to call me back for refund and/or replacement.

If it were me, I would have called Redding directly and had them send me a profile crimp die all on their dime. No reason to make Brownells eat shipping costs on an obvious Redding screwup.

I have tried to love me some Redding profile crimp and just can't make it run. I have lubed brass and tried unlubed. When I finally get to the point of actually attaining a rolled edge for a rolled crimp the bullet is swagged down. Starline Winchester Remington all squeezed the bullet at the first hint of rolling lip of case into crimp groove. Have definitely tried sneaking up to it. My other dies I achieve a full roll into crimp groove and no bullet swagging.

This and methods suggested by others only work under the premise your brass is all the same length.

If your results are inconsistent I would suggest you measure your brass length.

be safe

I've been using a Redding Profile Crimp on my 357 and 44 Magnums. If I were you I'd continue to use your current method but ease the amount of crimp, try shooting the + 1/4 turn. When I started using the profile crimp visually checking was difficult because the shape of the crimp is not really a roll and not really a taper. Many of my heavy magnum loads look like they have too little crimp, but they hold under recoil and seem to aid consistent ignition...

I had problems with the original die since it was a Taper and Not the Profile die. I’m good at this point. Thanks for your advice
