Default ACCURATE POWDERS RECALL

General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems Canada Valleyfield, Inc (GD-OTS), has determined a potential defect relating to certain lots of Accurate 2495, 4064 and 4350 propellants manufactured for Western Powders, Inc. prior to October 1, 2016 and packaged under the Accurate brand name in 1 lb. and 8 lb. canisters, may be defective.

The use or storage of this product may result in combustion, fire damage and/or possible serious injury or property damage. Some signs of degradation include, but are not limited to, container lid deformation, discoloration of the containers in the lid area, presence of red fumes when the container lid is opened, or the presence of a strong acidic odor.

GD-OTS and Western Powders, Inc. are recalling the following powders packaged under the Accurate brand in 1 lb. and 8 lb. containers:

Accurate 4064 Lots 2 - 16
Accurate 2495 Lots 2 - 17
Accurate 4350 Lots 2 - 22

What you should do:
1) Immediately fill the container with water, which will render the product inert and safe for disposal.

2) Notify Western Powders, Inc. and 406-234-0422, or [email protected]. We will provide you with instructions to photograph the bottle showing the lot number and provide refund information.

be safe

I am unfamiliar with any incidents involving auto-combustion of deteriorated smokeless powder. My experience is that deteriorated powder is somewhat difficult to burn, even by lighting it with a flame, it just sort of smolders and bubbles.

Thanks for the heads up, ruggyh. I had bought a pound of A 4350 in the past, probably before 2016 from what I remember, but my lot isn't included in the recall. Mine was lot 25, which is 3 over the recalled 4350 lots. I loaded it in 264 Win Mag and 260 Rem.

I just received an email from Western Powders today that further explained how to check your lot number and explained their marking system and I will try to explain it here. After reading the email, I found that my pound of A 4350 is covered under the the recall after I read their markings correctly on the bottle.

OK, take the markings on my can: "1210125" Deciphering this, the first 2 numbers "12" are the month. The next 2 numbers are the day "10". The 3rd 2 numbers define the year of manufacture "12". So my powder was made or bottled on 12-10-12. The number or numbers following the date numbers will be the lot number, which in my case is a "5". And they show for the recalled lot numbers for 4350 to be from 2 through 22.

So I guess I will be taking a picture of it and sending it to Western to get a reimbursement check from them.

A followup on the process here. I sent an email to Western about the powder and they got right back to me with the proper procedure to get my refund, which isn't too much of a pain in the rear end. I followed their directions, took a pic of the can of powder and attached it to the reply and got a confirmation back right away that they had my info. I guess I will see how long it takes for them to get my refund to me. They are giving $35 per pound and $225 for an 8 pound canister.

And to follow this up one more time, today the mail lady passed and dropped off a $35 check from Western Powders in my mailbox. Man, that was really fast. I am a happy camper with dealing with this whole recall process.
