I was hoping to at least see him use a dipper. But I guess Trail Boss needn't have "exacting" powder charges...

He has probably reloaded enough rounds that he can use the eyeball model power charge.

He says towards the end, using Trailboss where anything short of compression is just fine...

Interesting I suppose, but I'm not really sure just pushing a bullet into an unsized case is going to work very well for most rounds. Seems like carrying around extra powder, primers and bullets would be more of a hassle than carrying around a couple extra rounds.

A kind of a Red Green type system to reload with.

My thoughts exactly. Much easier and compact to carry an extra box of ammo. But still an "interesting" character, employing a very "interesting" reloading technique.

Long, long ago, I reloaded .30-30 with no tools to speak of, or rather, all my tools were home made. Taking it even a step further, I even reloaded Large Rifle primers using cap gun caps. It can be done. I had a stash of once-fired .30 Carbine bullets and used them also. First powder I had was a couple of cans of the old King's Semi-Smokeless powder and some black powder. The King's SS powder was once very popular among the muzzle loader fans, but hasn't been made since the 1940s. Single loaded one round at a time in an ancient Model 94. When I first started handloading for real, I had some early Lee Loaders (12 gauge, .44 Mag, and .30-'06). Very simple, but also very slow. But slow is better than not at all. I still use my .45 Colt Lee Loader on occasion. Good thing about the Lee Loader is you can put all of your tools (except maybe a hammer) and components in a shoe box and have space left over. You can take that shoe box anywhere.

But why? Certainly harder to carry reloading components vs loaded ammo. I just never got the idea of minimalist reloading. DO it at home, carry the ammo, shoot & repeat. One can make reloading as simple or complicated as you like but if the point is to make quality ammo in a shot period of time, for a variety of firearms, I see no point, just make ammo in the shop.
Back in the days of the buffalo hunter & a single shot, sure a bag of BP & case of primers, mold for making bullets & 100 cases made some sense I suppose but today, but for a SHTF scenario where I had to take oddball ammo apart & make ammo for my whatever, just a novelty loading rounds in the field.

I've shot enough muzzle loaders to see the point... but jeez, if your using a cartridge type rifle just load some extras and put them in your pocket that's the reason the were developed.

That was funny=seating a primer with a ramrod with his hand over the end. He was so stupid he didn't think about the primer going off. Maybe he only had one case. Dumb as a wood fence. I had to give it a like. Somehow he made it to old age so he must be right.

if you fired into the wind, you had to shut your eyes for a second
to let the paper particles float by or you might get a eye fullof paper..............

And people tell me I have dangerous reloading practices. I will spend the money and get 50 or 100 pieces of brass. Well for 45-70 I bought 150 once fired and scrounged, picked up another 300. A pound of ammo is 16 cartridges and more compact than a Swiss army knife and 1# of Trailboss. And just how does he "transport" his primers for field use?

I saw something different than those that called him "stupid". On the contrary, innovative, and primitive, but he was safely reloading. He shows he doesn't need $500.00 worth of equipment to reload. He shows just how simple reloading is. He shows he knows what reloading is all about.Of course he won't win any competitions with his handloads, but I didn't see anything really dangerous (watch again and you will see he started the primer seating against the stock then finished up by chambering the case and closing the action and seating the primer deeper. THEN he poked out the case with the cleaning rod). Trail Boss can be safely loaded by eye and I remember seeing "instructions" on charging Trail Boss when it first came out. Fill the case but don't compress was very, very common. His reloading that round was not hap-hazard or sloppy, just about as simple as it gets. Stupid? I don't think so...

He seats the primer by closing the action then takes the ramrod and seats the primer more with his hand over the rod.

After watching the vid, my first thought was "I think I saw him at Woodstock." I doubt he would remember me.

"Let me put my hand over the top of this cartridge case while I seat this primer. Then I'm going to dump a hand full of powder into it." What could possibly go wrong? I think I would classify that video as more entertainment than instruction. His next video is going to be "How to play the piano with nine fingers and one eye".

Its all about having fun, isn't it? Looks like he was having fun. I say right on, dude. Very Groovy.

The point of the video is that SKILLS not stuff will save your ###. In another vid he dumps the truck and has over 100 rds of .45/70 on board. The guy is teaching "mindset" not prepping. I spent an hour listening to him talk/ demonstrate. Much better than a lot of "gun test vids" by "experts." $.02. Joe

I enjoy seeing simple methods like this video but I also enjoy using my $350.00 press with my $50.00-$75.00 dies, with cases primed on my $100.00 priming tool, and fed from a $150.00 powder measure. But then some folks couldn't reload without all the high tech tools available today...

According to Hodgdon, for the most part, a max load of TrailBoss under any bullet is the bottom of the bullet when seated. Min load is 70% of that.

I to am going to come to the gentleman’s defense.

I would suggest that he was not trying to seat the primer against the buttstock, rather, he was friction fitting the primer just enough to hold it within the primer pocket so that he could chamber the case & primer combination and slowly close the action just as it is shown and seat the primer. Nor was he trying to seat the primer when he ran his ramrod down the muzzle, he was removing the case.

Why does he have to be stupid? I’ll tell you why, because some have watched the video and cannot comprehend what actually happened.
When that old boy has shot his last loaded round he will still be dangerous to his aggressors because he won’t give up.

The only stupid one here was me, I actually thought there was a little value to this video and that is when the mistake was made, I failed to remember that there would be a few safety Sally’s who would have to pick the video apart. But that’s life and I’ll do it again.

Nope! Not stupid! I enjoyed the video and most of the comments in the thread. Made me think about just how technology- and equipment-dependent we've become. Good to see somebody demonstrate simple, self-sufficiency. My Dad could build or fix many things with the most basic tools and materials. There was little doubt that he and Mom would make it through should some major disaster occur. Hard to say that about many people today. This feller's self-sufficiency was good to see.

I loved the post and it made my day. Hicksville USA. I invented the spoke gun at the age of 9. I took a spoke from a wire wheel and screwed it apart and cut the end off kitchen matches <the white part> and stuffed the spoke full and put a #9 pellet in the end then screwed the spoke into the retainer where the spoke screws on to the wheel and bent at a 90 degree angle and held with pliers and turn with one hand on the pliers and turn in until it went off. It would go through a piece of sheet metal. That was stupid but I am still alive. Not raging on anyone. Pore people have pore ways.

To me he was just showing a very simple and safe way to reload. Nothing more, nothing less.

This demonstrates an understanding of scientific principles and enough smarts not to kill yourself.

If nothing else, I learned something about Trail Boss.
