Has anyone chronographed this load?
The Hodgdon reloading data on their site shows 5.0 grains of 700-X, a maximum load for 45 ACP using a 230 grain LRN bullet and a 5" barrel, as having a velocity of 893 FPS. This seems high to me. I know that individual pistols vary but has anyone chronographed this load? I use this load in my 1911 for bowling pin matches and have a hard time believing the 893 FPS that Hodgdon lists. Load data from various other sources seems all over the place. I don't happen to own a chronograph at present and would like to have a rough idea about this combo. I know that individual pistols vary and there are other variables as well. That said, I'm just looking for a rough idea from someone that has actually chronographed this load.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I don't put much weight in the velocity data in load manuals, as the odds of your load in your gun being the same are slim. I primarily use it to see this powder produces a higher velocity than that powder, but the exact numbers are a shot in the dark.

In a Colt 1911 Gov't Model , 5" barrel , 230 gr. cast LRN ,
RCBS 45-230-RN , sized .452
4.6 grains of 700X clocks out @ 818 fps
With an additional 0.4 grs of 700X that 893 fps might be closer to 850 fps ... I wonder if the Hodgdon data was fired , like Lyman's , in a Universal Receiver ... which gives a few extra fps than a 1911 pistol ?

Not to be relied upon, but Quickload gives a MV of 871 ft/sec from a 5" barrel.

That sounds like a good number !
I was only guesstimating ... the 870 fps probably is closer to correct .

700X is a pretty hot customer that reaches high pressure quickly. When getting near its peak efficiency(PSI),it skyrockets its fps at quite a good speed, like all other quick burners.
I'd say that Hogdon is not far from the truth,of course all guns being different.
I own a Combat Commander that will clock 30 to 40FPS more than any 5'' Govt or Gold Cup I've pitted it against with 6.2 Unique while they use 6.5.This goes to say that what the testings tell you is a general guideline.Of course your mileage might vary.
