Default Midway Shipping

Has anyone other than I noticed a huge decline in the quality of how Midway USA packs for shipping, in particular bullets?
About a year ago, I had a larger order of a few thousand plated bullets arrive in a real mess, all spilled over the large box and the large box which seemed to be of the lowest possible quality had a large hole, so I lost at least some bullets, I was not about to count them all.
I complained, they at least refunded the shipping and I quit buying my bullets from them. Well, I recently had some other things to buy from them and threw a few boxes of Speer bullets in with the order thinking that since Speer packs them in heavy plastic boxes and also hoping Midway had cleaned up their shipping act, it would be OK.
of course, it was not, pictures are attached.

Midway isn't the only one who has issues packing bullets for shipment.
I just received an order from Wideners, shipped FedEx ground. I knew I was in trouble when I followed a trail of .223 55gr FMJ bullets down the driveway to the box by my garage door. Opened box, bullets every where in the brown paper wrapping. Found empty 500 pack bag inside one wrap of brown paper, Bag showed a Box Knife cut in the bag at one end and contained 3 bullets. It had to have been cut before it was packed, lazy packer could have tapped it shut with packing tape, but did nothing. Needless to say, they will be hearing from me.

Sorry for your troubles with MidwayUSA. I don’t order components from them, but do order ammo monthly, when they offer free shipping. Never had a problem. Always packed with those plastic airbag things in a small box.

Man, that sounds horrible but I can’t give MidwayUSA anything but praise. All my stuff has been both well packed and fast.

I'm almost positive it was Midway where I ordered a couple boxes of plated 45acp bullets and when they showed up, they had been thrown into a needlessly much bigger box with a bunch of styrofoam peanuts, with the bullet boxes split wide open. At least the outer box was intact. What a freaking mess.
Tried picking the bullets out but got tired of that pretty quickly because of the static charged peanuts sticking to everything. Finally took the whole mess out to the barn, dumped it out on the concrete floor and went to work with a shop-vac.
Holding the nozzle well above the bullets, I was able to suck up the peanuts and just leave the bullets.
Couple swipes with a broom and dust pan had the bullets gathered up and reboxed.
Sent a picture of the mess in the box, prior to clean up, to Midway with the comment, "Any idea how long it takes to separate 1000 bullets from a box of styrofoam peanuts? .....I do now! Got a one word response . . . Sorry.

I often order 'blemished' JHP's in various calibers from them. Usually in 100 round packs. No problems.

Yes, a significant decline. This is the email I sent to their CS Director concerning a recently shipped order.

“Matt - I’m contact you personally to express my concerns about the condition of my latest order received yesterday. I called and spoke to a service rep but also wanted you to know.
My order (see Subj Line for #) arrived with two large holes in the cardboard box exposing the contents. Nothing was missing nor damaged, however, the order contained two boxes of Fiocchi 7.62x39 rifle ammo. These ammo boxes were also broken open and the 40 rounds of live ammo were loose and adrift in the larger broken box. Hopefully, the two enclosed photos will show this. The only thing keeping the lose ammo in the larger box was one of the green packing air bags that was jammed in the opening.
Live, loose ammo falling out of a shipping container onto the floor of a USPS, UPS or FedX truck is not a positive image for responsible firearm ownership or firearm industry. In our current hostile media and political environment, this is not the message we collectively want to send. I hope you take this note in the spirit in which it is offered. I’ve been doing business with you all at MidwayUSA for a long time; you all our my go to place for all my shooting, gunsmithing and loading supplies.“

I received a reply from a staffer that said they would look into this. My next order was packed very well. Fingers crossed.

I've complained to them (Midway) about their shipping protocol more than once in the past few years. Two years ago, they shipped me a $300+ model 41 barrel in a Tyvek envelope. No padding, no bubble wrap, nothing.

People serving in some shipping departments are brain dead.

The last time I ordered from them (some reloading equipment) I was surprised to see it come in one of those padded envelopes. I've been a Midway customer for over 20 years, back when they had free shipping. Nowadays I usually don't purchase much from them unless I have a gift certificate, and I don't purchase bullets. With their "fair and honest" shipping it costs more than purchasing locally, or ordering from another vendor...

Default Midsouth

I don't want to sound like I am doing an ad for them, but, I have been buying more reloading components from Midsouth lately, Midway could sure take some packing/shipping lessons from them.
When I order 100 packs, which I do of Hornady XTP hollowpoints frequently, they take the small amount of time to tape them together, put them in another small box, whatever, the real point is they TRY.
Midway does not.
Not sure if I will ever buy anything from Midway again, but POSITIVE I won't buy bullets from them again.
Even the 100 packs of 45 grain Hornet bullets I bought, one was busted open, the 450 pack of Speer 357 HP's, totally spread all over the box, the box with the large hole in it !!
So, I lost some bullet's, they have lost my bullet business, which I am sure will not bother them, because if it did, they would pack as Midsouth does.
Or ACME Bullets, who I have been buying Hi-Tek coated cast bullets from, anyone bought from them?
They make super nice little wooden boxes to ship their bullets in.
I attached a picture of them.

Not exactly addressing the original issue, but FWIW when you have styrofoam packing peanuts sticking to things due to static, water kills it, provided the item in question can handle being exposed to water.

midway makes a big deal out of fast shipping so in order to do that they tend to just dump stuff in a box slap a label on it and then out the door. I pick up all most every thing I buy from them so I don't have to deal with that problem but the things I do pick up I would think if they were shipped It. would be a problem

yeah, Midway is the only place I've had a problem with their packing of ammo. Last time I ordered ammo from them was about 6 years ago. The 5 boxes of CCI Mini Mags arrived in a cardboard box with one air pillow in it. The were just put in the box loose with that one pillow. Two of the boxes were broken open with loose 22 rounds all over the box. They had some of the highest shipping charges at the time too.

I let them know about it and that I wasn't happy. Got an email back apologizing about the packing of the "shotgun shells". I felt like they didn't get the message, or didn't care. I have ordered other stuff from them and it was packed well, but no more ammo.

The unpleasant experiences above mimic my own. I've had bullets and 22LR cartridges spilled all over inside the box. Just like armorer951, I received a model 41 barrel stuffed and flopping around in a bag. I have complained each time Midway screws up and they say they'll look into it or offer to replace missing/damaged items. Nothing ever comes of it.

So, it's clear to me they don't really care. Or it's just cheaper to placate complainers like me. Typically their quasi-trained shipping monkeys toss the items it an overly large box and put a couple air pillows on top. The items rattle around in the box like there's no packing material whatsoever. Depending on the item, that may not be a huge problem. But heavy or delicate items, it certainly does.

I sure as shootin' won't buy any more bullets or ammo from Midway. Something delicate like a scale? No way! Only, if I can't find something elsewhere and I think it withstand their shipping, will I submit an order. It seems to me as Larry gets older and distances himself, the company is going down the tubes. It happens in many companies that start with a sole proprietor who eventually eases out and leaves the company to be run by others. Just wait until they are purchased by one of the "big outdoor stores."

Thanks for letting me rant!

As much as I like Midway and Larry, if you buy bullets. ammo Primers or Powder from them you paid to much.

Thousands of satisfied customer, many many years in business a few lose boxes of bullets is not a major issue.
This belongs in the Midway or other Company complaint section of the Lounge. along with shipping costs, time, UPS USPS and Fed EX.

I buy from Midway but not bullets or ammo. I have never had a problem with packaging of any of the stuff I have purchased. I buy my bullets from Precision Bullets, Kemp, Texas and they do nothing less than excellent in the way they package. Missouri Bullets does a good job too.

Have placed many orders over the years, and it's been pretty much a "**** shoot." When it comes to heavy/bulk items I too have experienced the disappointment of damaged orders attributed directly to poor (and unavoidable) packaging.

However, when brought to their attention they have sent replacements without question. And, in all fairness, as of late their packaging had improved significantly.

A number of years ago I frequently purchased bullets from Midway. At that time they sent those orders in flat rate USPS boxes that had a very heavy inner box that just fit inside the USPS size box. There was never any problem with those orders, but I guess the cost of the special boxes was too high. Since then I have primarily ordered from another source but the last time I ordered some Berry bullets from Midway they were NOT packed in this manner, and one of the plastic bullet boxes had broken open and the bullets were rolling around with the other items. Maybe the company is just getting too big.

See my above posting. Like I stated, you win some and you lose some...I LOST again.

I know they're understaffed, overwhelmed, and doing a great service as fast as humanly possible, but there is no excuse for lack of simple attention to detail. I absolutely can't believe they sent my $150.00 order in an ENVELOPE! What a mess. It's amazing the contents even stayed inside!

They've heard from me, but I'll likely just have to deal with it.

Will possibly use them only as a last resort from this point forward. Am done crossing my fingers every time I press the order button.

I’ve had the same results from Midway recently. I’d basically quit using them because of their high shipping costs, but found a couple of deals that I couldn’t pass up. In one order I’d included a box of Berry’s bullets, and the container had broken in transit, leaving bullets rolling around with the one pillow. At least the outer box held, but I’d be very reluctant to order from them again. Yes, I realize they’re swamped, but other businesses seem to do a much better job of shipping well.

Default I use them because nobody stocks my items

Yes they do have their shipping problems but they can (eventually) ship me what no one else stocks. They have my sierra 9mm 125 gr FMJ and my remington 7 1/2 small rifle primers.I even scored 2 lbs of varget. Today, I unpacked my order of 3x100 sierra bullets 9mm 125gr and, just like last time, one of the boxes has opened and I had a couple of loose bullets but at least it was the bullets I wanted. Yes, they can improve their packing but I will continue to use them when brownells doesnt stock my items.

I’ve had exactly 2 problems out of dozens of orders in the last 10 years. Neither of them involved bullets or ammo. I routinely buy bulk bullets on sale or clearance and maybe I’m lucky but I haven’t had any packing issues. One time I was shorted a few pieces of 357 maximum brass and they refunded me the change from the missing brass. Inconvenient when you buy 100 bullets and 100 primers but have 98 pieces of brass.

Another time they shipped me a contender fore end for a carbine when I bought one for a pistol barrel. The packaging was clearly opened and returned

Nope. Looks pretty much the same as they have for years.

Personally, I'd prefer it if we still had actual full service retail firearms/supplies dealers in our communities.
In other words, I miss the days of good old fashioned Mom-n-Pop retail businesses run by people who actually had a clue, and could do more than just sell plastic pistols, tactical gear, and bulk packs of mediocre factory ammo.
You didn't feel you had to buy 8 lbs of powder (that you never used before because they were out of the good stuff) or a case of primers just to beat the haz-mat fee.

I guess I have been lucky so far. All the orders I got from Midway have arrived safe and secure including 6 boxes of Speer .357's that arrived today.

The item I had to return to Cabelas the other day was a digital scale that was delivered in a 12 x12 x12 box..No packing no nothing. Sounded like a BB in a boxcar when I got it.. Needless to say...it did not work. The customer service gal at Cabela's had to take everything completely out of the little box to "make certain" it didn't operate. I had someone give me an OLD Dillon electronic that still works. Just wanted it for weighing bullets etc.
