Several years ago - (maybe close to 20?) I read in a magazine that they were going to reformulate Unique. So I went to the local gun stores and bought all I could find. It might end up being a lifetime supply. Still have a five pounder and a 1 pounder that have not been opened yet.

I would have guessed it was about 10-12 years ago that folks were getting wound up talking about "old" Unique versus new and improved "cleaner burning" Unique.
Actual chronograph tests here indicted that the new stuff exhibited no more difference than lot-to-lot differences in the old stuff.

My brother and I loaded 28gauge (1200 fps) with Unique for several years, before going to Longshot (1300fps). We each used an 8 pound Keg plus a pound a year!

If I was a pharaoh buried in a pyramid they would find jugs of Unique in my sarcophagus.

I've got an old bottle of Hoppes #9 around here somewhere but
it hasn't been opened for several years. I much prefer the aroma
of Breakfree CLP to the stench of Hoppes

Just for the record...I wasn't complaining about Unique. I love the stuff, and use it in my .45 Colt loads for Ruger Vaquero and Blackhawk, my 20" Model 92 rifle, as well as .38 Special and .357 Magnum loads for my GP100 as well as my 686 Plus. It's one of my favorite powders for revolvers. Just always amazes my how sooty it is. But it's easy to clean, so no worries.

That new and Improved cleaner burning package has been around for a while
I am not getting into a powder war, Unique is fine for certain uses, that said
It is is "dirty" (I really don't care)
It don't meter as well as other powders
It is spiky at certain loads
It only works well at near max loadings
Maybe it is great in shotguns, I don't know.
But other than that whats not to like?
In the many "if you only had one powder in the world" threads. Unique would not be my choice
I am more of a Hodgdon guy and their online data is way better than Alliant
But everyone has their favorites.
I just loaded 100 rounds of 357 mag and 45 Colt with the darn stuff.

Although Bullseye is my powder choice for 38 special and 45 acp, I got a free 1 lb can from a friend and used it for 38 special reloads both 148 grain bbwc and 110 grain JHP +p loads and they both where really accurate out of my model 27.

I use lots of Unique for general purpose range and field loads in all sorts of handguns, revolvers and automatics. Sometimes Unique fuels favored self-defense loads too.

Let’s not forget you can brush your teeth with it too

During the 2013 Panic I switched from Bullseye and Unique, to AA#5. Much cleaner burning, meters like water. You won't go back.

I wish I could find some Hoppes from when I was a kid in the 1960's. I'd use it as aftershave. Used to love the smell when the old man cleaned his duck gun.
I also use Unique in .38 Special and .357 mag. It also works well in 10mm for plinking and competition loads. If I could have only one powder for handguns..................

It wasn't called UNIQUE for nothing..I use it on everything from .22 Jet to .500 S&W...
Two tricks to make it "less" dirty is to use a heavy crimp and hot primer...

Unique is a very versatile powder . It's a powder that is often " imitated " but never " duplicated " . Kind of like the exhaust sound of a well tuned Harley . You can put loud pipes on a rice burner , but it just isn't the same . Regards Paul

I will add , " don't load it in the lower range " . Like any other powder it likes pressure to burn clean , and it will if given a chance . If all a person can do is complain about soot , smoke etc . Then quit using it and go buy a faster burn powder . It's really quite simple . Regards Paul
