Hi, I have an interesting problem that is puzzling me. I´m starting to load some .45 Auto Rim to use in my brazilian S&W 1917/37 and since
it´s somehow difficult to me now, due to regulations, to buy large pistol primers I´m using a kind of primer, non corrosive and made by CBC. called Tupan 56 that´s more easy to find. It´s a bit large and the Berdan primer pockets were opened a bit more to acomodate them.So far so good. I fired today 5 or 6 cartidges, loaded only with primers.They detonate all right but tied up the cylinder, stopping its rotation.Could this have been caused by lack of a bullet in the cartrigde? Why is the primer, after been duly seated, protuding upon firing ?
As I have no factory rounds to spare and use a bullet puller and try this with a normal large boxer primed case I´m at loss.
I suspect I´ll have to buy an assortment of boxer 45 cases and large pistol primers (a bit expensive by by-passing the proper channels- too much red tape to get them through CBC)

Primers backing out are caused by the case not being pushed back against the recoil shield. I doubt if a full load would have the same results as primed case. Actually people who shoot wax or plastic bullets drill out the primer hole to prevent this. You should be good to go when adding powder and bullets.

A normal powder charge will shove the case back into the recoil shield and reseat the primer

The flash hole is drilled out slightly smaller than the diameter of the primer. There is no powder used in shooting wax or plastic bullets. This keeps the primer from backing out and theoretically increases thrust to the plastic or wax bullet. Once done these cases can not be for regular loads ever again.

Ray, don't drill out the primer hole for loading normal ammo. That is only for wax bullets used in Cowboy Action ammo.

Like said above, you will vaccine once you are the powder and bullet. Have fun, be safe.
