Default Well, here's one nice thing about reloading 45acp

I live in a small coastal Oregon town. Pretty much every hardware store etc. sells ammo. Right now you cannot find anything in 9mm or 40S&W. Small pistol primers are unavailable anywhere. But, large pistol primers are everywhere as well as 45acp bullets. I mostly shoot 9mm and 357mag but it looks like for a while at least I'll mostly be shooting my P220 and my Shield45. I was going to sell them and buy an M&P45 but as luck would have it the system is so backed up they can't run background checks. So, good thing in a way I guess.

Plus loading 45 ACP is one of the best money saving calibers along with 357 mag 10 mm and such.
The Sig P220 is one of the best-est 45 pistols around! Hold on to it!

I agree about the P220 except for one thing. The take down lever is constantly trying to remove my thumbnail and fling it into the sticker bushes. I have to stop in between shots to make sure my grip is just right. Too bad too, it's a great pistol and it's got the SRT and TFO sights. Especially since Sig is apparently canceling production of almost all the P220 line.

I like reloading .45 ACP, but for a real money saving cartridge I'd go with .455 Webley.

They are all money savers when you cat your own bullets.

I've had many .45 ACPs; the Sig P220 is easily my favorite. Very accurate with cast bullets. It probably would do well with jacketed bullets, too, but I can't remember ever trying any.

Although I reload a couple of the more popular, "too hip, too cool", "tactical" cartridges, I still prefer the "old school" cartridges and guns (like my 45 ACP 1911 and my 38 snub noses). And yep, the "antique 45 ACP" is still available in my small coastal OR town (only one mebbe two ammo dealers in area)...

625s tend to be pretty hungry you-know-whats, throw in a 1911 and a p220 and you'll be in a serious .45 deficit.

Hang on to a good 45 acp and grab a $25.00 Lee 2-cavity mould...then you could , if necessary one day , cast bullets if the supply dries up .
I'm partial to the full sized 1911 and a truncated cone cast bullet .

This should just remind you guys/gals to have enough components. 1990, then 2012-13 were my wake up call. Keep one years shooting worth of stuff in reserve, whatever that is. For me its 10k rds worth of primers & powder. Never get below that. I can repurpose any powder, I make all my handgun bullets, brass lasts almost forever. You must have primers though.

In Texas if you have a Concealed Carry permit you can bypass the NICS check and walk out with your purchase when you buy it. CCP cost is $35.00 for 5 years if over 65. Well worth the cost.

In Louisiana you don't need a Concealed Carry Permit or NICS check to buy ammo .

In Texas , If you don't have the $35.00 CCP is there a "fee" for the NICS check to buy a box of ammo ?

The Lee 452-230-TC was the first mold I got for 45 ACP. I cast and shoot a lot of those bullets. It feeds flawlessly in 3 guns chambered for it and was fairly accurate for me. Big, easy to cast bullet that I either pan lubed or dip lubed with 45-45-10 and sized in a Lee push through sizer. I use quite a bit of "range scrap" and wheel weight alloy softened with a bit of pure. Inexpensive way to get bullets, and I shoot quite a few...

My doomsday, TEOWAWKI, gun is a 62 caliber or about 20 gauge Northwest Trade musket. They can outlaw primers but they can't outlaw rocks. Two hundred pounds of Kentucky cave dirt will still yield a pound of saltpetre. Kentucky supplied a good bit of gunpowder used during the War of 1812.

While limited by range, a smoothbore musket has the flexibility to kill anything that flies, walks, or crawls pretty efficiently. It is not hard to understand why the trappers and Indians used them for survival. Many of the relics found in the Rainy River on the Canadian border and part of the fur trade travel route were loaded with shot. You eat a lot better with a scatter gun.

Okay, one more guy from the Oregon coast here.

I haven't been to a store that sells ammo or components in about two months, so I truly don't know what supplies are looking like here on the north coast at the moment.

If I was to pass, and they stood in front of my personal inventory of ammo and components to decide what to do with it, I'm pretty sure they'd be saying something like, "What on earth was he thinking?"

Not 45 Auto related, but Oregon coast related:

Hank Kaufman was the proprietor of Kaufman’s Sporting Goods in Astoria for a bunch of years. In 1967 he sold me a 1903 Springfield for the munificent sum of $50. An E-3’s pay wasn’t a whole lot more than that back then.

That was when I started reloading. Hank suggested a load using 150 grain bullets with IMR-4064. It was an accurate load. When I had just about gone through the first pound of powder, I stopped in to visit and pick up another pound. He said he would be happy to sell me another pound, but if I still had the can, he had some bulk powder that would be less expensive.

It turned out he had a keg in the store’s basement, only one of several I would imagine. I left with one pound of IMR-4064 in a brown paper bag, a smile on my face, and my wallet lighter by only one dollar.

Hank was a nice guy and a great mentor.

In 1979, I bought a Ruger #3 in .45-70 and a Ruger Security-Six .357 from Kaufman's. It was my favorite store in Astoria.

No such requirements to buy ammo in Texas in any quantity. With the Texas carry permit (covers concealed and open) you don't need to go through the FBI background check to buy a gun from a dealer, just fill out the form. Without the permit, you do. No paperwork or permit needed to buy ammo.

While I can appreciate that, my apoc plan is scavanging. I can make anything go bang in any caliber. There would be lots of old & obsolete stuff in homes & shops. Gather it up, break it down, make bullets, reload for calibers you have. The revolver would return as the preeminent SD weapon becausecyou can keep your brass & run bp if you can make your own.

This enforced isolation has some benefits...I pulled out all my old once-fired .45 Auto brass and cleaned it up....ended up with a 5 gallon bucket of brass! Didn't know I had collected so much. With the brass, powder, primers, and bullets I have on hand, I can likely load 8,000 rounds now.

That is an excellent start to a summer of shooting. Now to get the 38 spl wadcutters, 9 MM, and 40 S&W loaded.

I have decided that I've been to enough estate sales buying good bargains. I don't plan on my wife having one. She'll get the insurance policy, the guns, and lots of empty brass. I bought it, she and I will shoot it!

I cleaned all of the .45 Colt, .44 mag, .41 mag, .357 mag, .38 spl, 10mm, .40 S&W, and 9mm brass as well. Not near as much as the .45 ACP, but several thousand more to load. I have components for everything but the 9mm.

While the 9 is the hot thing nowadays with younguns,I think and go by the thinking that a .45 is never a mistake.
Like mentionned above, stash a minimum of 10k primers with whatever powder is needed to replenish 10ks brass in .45acp and you will be well heeled for any(close to medium range) situation that might arise.
Fun thing with good old .45 is that once you've got the brass and if you cast your own bullets, the little beast can be fed for a fraction of a penny more than a .38spl or 9.And a .45 is,well,a .45!
