,357 110 JHP
I have about 500 110 JHP's in my stash. Was thinking of loading these with about 18.0 grains of 2400. Has anyone tried this loading? Thoughts?

I got 2400 powder to get a 125gr JHP up to 1502fps with a 98% load.
I saved the little 110 JHP for my J frame revolver.

That would make my +P trigger finger bleed with a J. frame.

Using Reminton 110sjhp with 18.0 2400, I got 1470fps from a 6" M19.

I saw a loading for that in my Sierra Manual. I put that info into a computer program that I have and the chamber pressure came up as dangerous high.

That appears to be a near maximum pressure charge, and 'may' cause the same type of forcing cone erosion as the full 125 gr .357s have the reputation of causing. Is there a specific reason you want to try this load?

Looking on the Speer website, they show a max load of 19.5 grains of 2400 with their 110 grain JHP (not Gold Dot) bullet.

Have 500 of the Sierra 110 gr. JHP BLITZ 8300 and was thinking of using them for a defense load in my Model 27-2 3.5". I also use the Quickload program to check pressures. The 18.5 grains of 2400 gives me a chamber pressure of 46651 psi with a muzzle velocity of 1546 fps. Pretty stout. I backed down the loading to 14.4 grains of 2400 and get a pressure of 22831 psi and a MV of 1139 fps. Seems to me a reasonable loading and less wear and tear on the revolver.

I use to shoot the 110gr at max loads for jackrabbit hunting in the desert. Shots were from contact on runner to 120y sitting. The 110gr does a great job on small targets but I never thought them a good choice for a SD bullet at max vel, they will frag on a 2.5# jackrabbit, not sure they would penetrate enough on larger things.

Thought the 110's might be fine up close. Just was looking for a use for them. Got them in a deal a while back. Will try something heavier....

Heck, load them down a bit then. That way they won't blow up when they hit something substantial. You could load at 38 Special +P velocities, as there are several manufacturers make 110 grain self defense loads in 38 Special.

According to some, light (i.e. short) bullets in .357 magnum have a tendency to flame-cut the forcing cones of revolvers when pushed hard. I'd use ultra hot 110 loads sparingly.
That being said, AA#9 lists a max load going almost 1700 fps. Yikes!

I would probably use Unique . Alliant has load data for 110gr stuff . They list about 9.5 grs . You could easily back down to 8.5 for a nice load , not hard on the weapon or the shooter and yet has plenty of power for most needs . Regards Paul

In a 357 Magnum the little 110 JHP would actually do a lot better in a SD load if it were adjusted to fit in the speed of the 9mm, for best results.
You might load a few at 1200 to 1250fps and see how they do in some water jugs.
Too fast and the larger Dia. will prevent penetration, while if too slow, will cause the bullet to not open up and over penetrate, which I had happen to a 125 gr Gold Dot.
MY 6" Magnum did well in the accuracy department at 1250fps with the 110gr JHP bullet, with 2400 powder.
