Default Federal Primers

Local store has Federal small and large pistol primers. The price is $23.49/thousand and $24.49/thousand for the magnum primers for either large or small. Is it a fair price now days, and is the extra dollar worth the difference for the magnum primers?

Both are definitely good prices. Go buy now before someone else does.

As mentioned, they are fine and I would buy them if needed. I would only buy the magnum versions if some of my loads required them - usually big charges of WW296/H110 require them.

What he said! That's a really good price.

A smart man will squirrel away as many components as he possibly can, especially these days.

And as far as the price concerning standard v. magnum, what's an extra buck? Do you load magnum cartridges?

For the extra dollar per 1000 they are making a killing.

Some pistol powders do work better with magnum primers. H110/W-296 definitely benefit from using magnum primers. I have read that HS-6 and HS-7 can also perform better with magnum primers.

In my neck of the woods, Federals at 30 and below is a good deal. I would buy all I could at this price. I don't have a need for magnums. I guess a guy could pick some up and work up some loads for them. Problem is you would always need them going forward. I try to stick with what is most versatile for all my reloading.

Nice find

Before the "virus" struck, the best price I saw on Federal primers was closing in on $40/K. Winchester best prices were in the $33/K range. Last time I looked about a month ago, before I gave up, everybody was sold out!
I have enough to last awhile, since I have been through shortages a few times. Will need to restock, though, as I have had lots of time to get way ahead of my reloading needs! :-)

I have to go to town later today (30 miles) and will stop and buy some. I haven't loaded .357 yet, but would the magnum primers be alright for .38 special using Unique powder, as I have inventoried up on that. The store also had Winchester primers, and they were priced within a buck or two of the Federal's.

Wow. I can't believe your local has such good prices. I don't understand why you didn't buy all you could afford at that price. As far as the Winchester primers go, I would accept the Federals long before the Winchesters. The Winchester primers I have I tend to keep for emergencies. Like when there's no good primers. I haven't had the best of luck with Winchester. They fire alright but I've always had a tough time seating them.

I just noticed you're in Oregon. I'm on the southern Coast. Is that store anywhere near me. I'll buy some Fed's.

That is a good price. Prior to the onset of the "Wuhan Klap" I was paying $34.00 per thousand. I'm in the SW PA area. Right now the pickings are slim.

That's a good price on Federals. I like them. They are supposedly softer than others, and ignite easier. Magnums for my 296 loads, regulars for my 231 and Universal loads.

No need for Magnum primers with Unique. Standard primers work just fine with Unique powder.

1sailor, the store is Sportsman's Warehouse. I was in Medford, Or. yesterday for doctoring, and their store had the same price on the non-magnums, but five bucks higher on the magnums. I went back to the Klamath Falls store today and purchased the regular ones, the price was $23.89/thou., a tad higher than I thought
Nightowl, I am only going to load .38spl., so don't think I need the magnums either. I got several thousand bullets and brass to load, so I am getting ready.

Federal are my go to pistol/revolver primers. First choice, they are a little softer(less likely to misfire) and maybe even a little better accuracy wise.

You only need to use magnum primers when the load data calls for it , such as slow burning powders like 2400 , other than that you are wasting money .

It's like a car , if it's built to run on regular gasoline you will be wasting money running it on premium gas .

If you don't need magnum , don't spend money for nothing .

At those prices buy up all you can ...I see a panic comming !!!!
