Anyone have a good load for the 44 spl using Red Dot with
a 225 gr cast bullet? Thanks for any info.

I would suggest 6-6.5 grs . Somewhere in between or one end or the other will be your choice . Regards, Paul

Agree, you will be good in the 6 to 6.5 grain range for a nice light load. I used that charge with 200 to 240 grain lead bullets for years of CAS shooting, both revolver and carbine.

less dirty than unique. I have a unique load that really shoots
great, but it's very dirty.

The main reason your Unique load shoots " dirty " is because you are using too light of a load . It's not building enough pressure to burn cleaner . So your choice to move on to a faster burning powder is a good one . Good Luck , Regards Paul

I've been loading for over 50 years and I have many loading
manuals. I can pretty much tell if a suggested load is going
to not be safe. Also, there's very little loads for the 44 spcl
with red dot.... but thanks for the advice.

My current go to reload for plinking with the
44 S&W Special reload; .431dia. 240gr Lead
SWC Semi Wad Cutter or RNFP round nose flat
point works also..
5.0grs Alliant Red Dot, S&B LP primer
Brass is Winchester, Star Line, or R-P.
Crimp is what I call medium roll crimp.
FPS approximately just under 800?
Bullets tumble lubed with Ben's Liquid Lube,
for Lead free barrel performance.
Primers no where near flat.

The thing about Red Dot is it has enough bulk, that it is easy
to visually see a double charge. Also if you were to over charge
it fills the case. I'm a single stage, small batch reloader anyway.

Other powders I've used and like are; Bullseye,
Unique, American Select, and Long Shot (not much
info out there on this one), and Trail Boss (not much
luck with this one).

Any of the faster burning pistol/shotgun powders will work fine with 200 to 240 grain lead bullets to make light .44 Special loads. using charges in the 6 to 6.5 grain range - Bullseye, Red Dot, AA #2, 700-X, and Clays.

The "difficulty" is the bullet weight. Lots of data for 240 grain bullets. You can extrapolate, interpolate from that data.

6.5 gr is my 44 magnum plinker load with a 250 gr keith style bullet. It gets near 1000 fps from a 5.5" Redhawk. I don't believe the gun is listed so adjust your load accordingly.

Front sight and squeeze

My gun is a Taurus model 441 .44 special with a 4" barrel.
It's a heavy gun and is a real pleasure to shoot. I've been
using 7.5 grs of unique with the 224 gr NOE bullet mold.
It's very accurate with this load.
