Default Rem 7 1/2 primers for .223

Question for the guru's: I have ~500 .223 to reload (middle-of-the-road plinking load with IMR 3031 and 55gn bullets) and have 200 Rem 7 1/2 primers. BUT, I also have enough Rem 7 1/2 BENCHREST primers to complete the job. Is there any disadvantage to using up these BR primers? I gave up the thought of Benchrest; but I still have these primers. Thanks all.

Use them. For AR .223 loads they are recommended over primers with thinner cups so as to reduce the chance of slam fires, but they work fine in bolt-action rifles too. Sort of confusing, I guess, but there is only one 7 1/2 primer; it says benchrest on the box but for all purposes it's pretty much a magnum primer like a CCI-450.

+ 1 on above . 223 / 5.56 AR's the Rem 7 1/2 , CCI 450 / 41 or Win 41 primers are recommended because of slam fires & higher pressures .

"..but there is only one 7 1/2 primer..". I just looked at the sleeve's of the 'loose' 200. By gosh, they ARE 7 1/2 BR primers. Thank you for my education.

When Remington ran Lake City they used their 7 1/2 primers in all the 5.56 ammunition. As stated above they are a magnum primer because much of the the Lake City ammunition was loaded with Winchester ball powders.

I've been using both Rem 7 1/2 and CCI 41 for years. One Bushmaster DCM likes the Remington and the other one likes the 41. The only difference in the load is the primer.

Considering what the use of 7 1/2s did for my .223 accuracy loads, that seems a terrible waste of potential. But, you do what ya gotta do.

The remington benchrest 7 & 1/2 primers are what are recommended to prevent slam fires in the AR-15. That is all I use.

Thank you everyone. Since I have them and I'm only looking for plinking fodder; I'll use them.
