Default Starline .45 Auto Rimed

Think I just got a good deal, I'm trying to get away from moon clips for my 625-2 and came upon what I think is a good deal from Starline. I ordered 500 pieces of their .45 Auto Rimed brass for $111.00 shipped. That comes to about .20 per round. I've had great luck with all their pistol brass I used. So I decided to give this one a try.

Starline may be the only one making .45 AR. I haven't seen any Remington available in a while. I much prefer the .45 AR brass over the .45 ACP with clips.

While I do prefer auto rim in my model 25-2 I have never had a
problem shooting 45 ACP without moon clips. Most of my cases fall out by gravity and any that don’t cooperate I pop out with a small dowel or a pencil.

I must admit that I've never tried it, will have to one of these days. Anyway, 500 .45 Auto Rimed should last me quite a while. I still have many thousand .45 ACP to shoot up so I guess I'll go with and without a moon clip and see how my 625 takes them naked.

I had 500 rounds of new Starline AR brass for about 20 years, and a 625-6 sitting in the safe. Being the virus situation, I loaded it up this spring and have shot all of them in my 625-6 and model of 1950, too. Had so much fun, I ordered 500 more rounds. Regular ACP rounds shoot in both guns too, most of the time. I had some misfires, but after some comparisons, I am pretty sure that I had some bad primers.

I am not a fan of moon clips for just range work either.

500 pieces of AR brass will last a long time. They will likely reload at least 10 times, likely many more. I have a bunch that's on it's sixth loading. I use AR brass for light loads and moon up some acp rounds for the auto pistols if I want hotter loads for the 625's.

I size all my AR and acp brass with a Lyman U-die to get plenty of case tension to keep bullets from moving either way.

A couple of years ago I tried that with my 625 - about half the rounds would not fire without being clipped. I miked the empties - about half of them were way under trim to length. Seems that some companies are slacking off on quality control....

I've got maybe 200 pieces of .45 AR brass that I've acquired over the years. Mostly Starline. I use them for heavy loads for my 625-3. The next piece I have to throw away will be first - I think I've got plenty. 500 seems like a whole ton of them, but I don't know how you shoot them or how long you plan to be doing so.

Good price, though!

It was the price that guided me toward the 500.

Well, you can easily get your money out of any you decide are taking up too much room.

45AR is my go-to in my 325/625s. Anything I shoot routinely has 400-600 rounds loaded up in advance. 500 is a good start.

The Starline 45AR cases are plenty strong for hotter loads. They'll easily handle 45 Super power.

Since the cases are rimmed you can roll crimp them with bullets that have a cannelure, like Sierra's 240 JHC, for better ignition & to prevent jump crimp.

Starline is my go-to source for brass. If they make the case I want, I buy from them. No reason to consider other suppliers. Great brass, great price, great service. What more to ask? I'm surprised other brass suppliers remain in business.

Years ago I had a coworker give me a whole box (500?) of new unfired Starline .45AR cases. I had already shot 100 rounds of the Georgia Arms .45AR ammo so I had some .45AR cases onhand.

To be honest I never use them much as I always have plenty of .45acp cases and typically don't have any issues with them in my revolvers with or without using moonclips. I always load the .45acp cases as I can use that ammo in my semi-auto variants as well if I choose to.

Maybe one of these days I will load all the .45AR cases up just to have at the ready.

I could see where having a case with a non-spec caselength could be an issue, but then again I would also think it would have been a known issue for semi-autos as well if it were a bad enough lot.

I measured quite a few ACP cases and found a very wide variation too, from .972 to .998! The variation in chamber depth is only about .002, so more likely the ammo is the culprit.

I measured some once fired factory ammo and found a lot of them were in the .888 to .889 range with some a bit more and some a bit less. They all fired in the 625-6. I had some misfires in the AR cases in both the model 1950 and the 625 even though both actions are very heavy. I think there must have been some bad primers in the group. I seat to the bottom of the primer cup, so I don't believe the seating was as issue.
