Default .44 Spl. Loads With The 180 Grain XTP

It’s been three months since some of us got in on that great deal with the Hornady .44 180 grain XTP’s. So does anyone have any chronographed loads with this bullet using Special brass ?

The Hornady book shows about ten powders and chronographed data using that bullet in a .44 Special revolver.

Yes I have that manual. They’re using a Charter Arms with a 3” barrel .
Was looking for loads with a little more power for my Freedom Arms M97 .

There has been one or two Brian Pearce articles in HANDLOADER magazine over the past several years that has extensive .44 Special data; some of the loads are pretty warm (for strong guns only). Data likely includes your bullet. I don't know if this information is available online, but someone here may know the particular HANDLOADER copy number(s).

Thanks Rock for the reply . I have all of those articles and none have anything for the 180 grain. All of his data starts with the 200 XTP.
Probably why we got these bullets at a close out price. That weight .44 bullet just isn’t very popular .

Next step, I'd look at Sierra, Speer, and Hodgdon data and do some careful extrapolation with their closest bullets and go from there if you are comfortable with that process.

I've been shooting .44 Special loads for decades but only with cast bullets. Good luck-

Hand loader 308 (June 2017):

Brian Pearce had 3 powders for 180 XTP on the Special.

American Select. 5.5 to 6.5
Power Pistol 7.5 to 9.3
Accurate #5 9.0-10.5.

Highest velocity 1041 fps with Power Pistol
OAL 1.490

These are standard pressure loads. I personally have used some of his +P loads and use those for the 200 XTP as the place to start. I’m very confident with my FA 97. Recoil usually stops me before what I believe to be the firearm’s limit.

It sure beats using a '10" test barrel'

There's only one way to good data with that.

Chrone your own.

180 xtp, new starline case, Fed 150 primer, 9.0 gns unique, 1.473 col

696-1 = 1025 fps, vg accuracy, 8.5 gns unique for about 980 fps
624-3 = 1044 fps, vg accuracy
24-3 = 954 fps, ex accuracy
M624 4 in = 1089 fps, vg accuracy
M21-4 4 in = 1132 fps vg accuracy

Older Hdy factory 180 xtp load from 696=790 fps

Would not use the above loads in charter arms/taurus lwght's. Somewhere have AA7/AA 5, and N350 loads, but would have to dig for em. Used to prefer the Rem 180 sjhp's, but tough to find now and expensive anymore.

What would make you think that using those loads in a longer barrel would not generate more velocity and energy?

The usual situation is the more onerous, IMHO: i.e., test data for 357 MAGNUM using a 10" barrel as shown in Hodgdons for 158gr bullets.

Cheers!

P.S. Accurate has published data for their #2 & their #5 MAX load for this specific bullet is @ 1,000fps as well. Also data for a different bullet(?) using True Blue at 180gr.
