Oh, Oh Tumbler Quit
After only 35 years or so, my tumbler quit this afternoon. I had taken out the clean brass and put the dirty in. When I turned the switch on, it ran for about a second and quit.
I will see if I can find someone to look at the cord and switch. If I have to, will order another one. The new one will surely outlast me.

Mine quit after 30+ years as well. The company sent me a motor at cost with free shipping. When I went replace the motor I found one of the mounting screws backed out and blocked the motor fan. So check to make sure everything is tight.

Very interesting. My tumbler is 25 years old and I'm 78 years old. I'd be delighted if the worst thing that happens to me in the next 10 years is that I'm buying a new tumbler at age 88!

I had a cheap Frankford Arsenal one that was about 20 years old, and it recently bit the dust. I even took it apart, and was thinking of putting a new motor in it. However, looking around, I found a Berry's on sale, and it is both faster and quieter than the FA. It should last 20 or more years, but I probably will expire before it does.

Think about this! Take an electric motor with a bearing at each end of the rotor, install a device to make the rotor run unbalanced(extremely), never oil the bearings, and expect it to last 35 years! If only they made cars to the same specs?

When I looked at how my "wobbler" worked, 40 years ago, I was surprised they last more than a month. The weight running several thousand RPM off center seems to be designed to fail. Perhaps the spring mounting lessens the damage from the "off center/unbalanced" design...
My Lyman 1200 still works, but I prefer a rotary so it gets little use.

The spring mounts are what failed on mine Lyman after about 25 years of fairly heavy use (probably 10,000 rounds per year on average). I ordered a replacement for it and then discovered that it wasn't all that hard to re-attach them. I did so and it's been running fine for the last 10 years, along side the "new" one.
The new one developed a crack in the lid as the bowl and lid are not nearly as heavy as the bowl and lid on the old one.

I'm guessing my Lyman was about 36 years old when it quit working. I bought a new one, don't remember the brand except it is red, and it works for the lite duty I need it for. I was thinking the bottom of the old one was sealed and couldn't be fixed. I'll have to check.

If it's one of the old Midway blue 1292 tumblers, they're under a recall
for starting fires. I swapped mine out with Midway last year.

It went back to Midway years ago and they remedied the problem and sent me a gift certificate.

It is not the cord or switch. Motor seems to have a problem. I read on the Midway website that these have a "lifetime warranty" and they will replace with a new one. This was written in the "reviews" section by a customer. I will call them tomorrow.

Well, apparently Chevy Silverados have the unbalanced part perfected.

Got to love "lifetime warranty"!
When my Lyman Turbo 1200 quit I found a stove hood vent fan motor was the same size.

Vent fan motor?
I'm in need of a new motor. I've searched and wasn't able to find a match.
Which motor did you find that matched?
This came up before years ago but I didn't need one then...of course!
Thanks in advance,

Jez, I must be lucky. I'm using a Thumblers Tumbler I bought in 77. Had one repaint and a new belt.

It was a GE range hood that I had thrown in the basement when I re-modeled the kitchen. It is 25+ years old and the motor fit the mount in the Lyman 1200. It is a higher rpm motor but does a great job.

If your tumbler has an inline switch. Cut it out and wire it direct. Could run again.

Case cleaner motor
I've searched for a replacement and there are a ton of similar but I was hopping for an exact match.
For now because of the noise I just use it for removing lube after reloading. I'll keep looking and maybe get lucky!

My tumbler is not covered by the recall and exchange as they fixed it years ago. I am ordering a new Frankford Arsenal from Amazon. Because of the points I have, it will cost me about a dollar and with the free shipping I will have it tomorrow.

Thanks for helping this old man repair a 20+ year old tumbler I purchased from Cabela's a long time ago. This tumbler was manufactured by Berry's. I'm one who keeps broken things around for parts if I need them in the future well, that's why I still have it. Mike, SC Hunter mentioned the in-line switch so I dug the tumbler out and took the switch apart and, sure enough, one of the wires had come lose. After a quick soldering job I now have two working tumblers.

My new tumbler got here this afternoon and is currently working with the .45's that I fired last week. The ones I fired this morning are waiting their turn.

The new tumbler works somewhat different than the old one. The media seems to move in a circular fashion as opposed to the up and down of the old one. It also makes a different noise. It is more of a low roar. For the first time in 30 years. I have moved it out into the garage.
I ran it for 8 hours or more and the brass looks fine. I will probably load some of it later today. Batch#2, which is smaller, is now in.
A guy who works at the LGS took the old tumbler as he said he would tinker with the motor and see if he could get it running again. I hope that he can fix or repair the motor and get it working for another 30 years.

8 hours to tumble brass??????????
Something is not right?
Should only take 2-3 maximum.
Overloaded
not enough media
Too much media
Wrong kind of media
Old media
No magic "additive"
Bad tumbler

They make this marvelous invention called a timer!
Why tumble for an excessive amount of time when less time will do the exact same thing?
2 hrs.

My wife bought me a red rolling drum thing, Model B if I recall, some 40 years ago. Had to replace the belt a couple of times. Have it hooked up with an a timer switch. Two hours does a great job. I'm 75 so it doesn't have to last much longer; another 20 years should do it.

I had a bathroom exhaust fan that quit, I gave the fan a push and it ran a week then quit. I took it down and lubed the bearing/bushings on both ends and has been running with out a hitch for about 10 years. I better go knock on wood since I talked about it.

Had my Ultravibe 18 for 40 years, run it almost every week and one day years ago it started making a horrible noise!
Turns out the armature bearing or something gave up the ghost and allowed that part to slip down, creating that awful noise!
Bent up a coat hanger and zip-tied it underneath to support the armature and now it may well live another 40 years!
I probably won't though.

The bearings are going out in mine too. I'll have to try something similar to quiet it a bit.

Try pushing up on the armature while it's running, if it SHUTS UP you found the problem!

I also find that when I do go overnight, my boxer holes get clogged with walnut shells (I use a 50/50 walnut&corn-husks). When I tumble >2hr, I have an issue. In other words, I find diminished returns with prolonged tumbling and that requires more manually clearing those boxer holes.

I do not decap my cases until after tumbling.
I worry about running dirty cases through my decap/resizing die and the scratches that may result on all future cases if I scratch up the carbide insert.
Never had a problem with media getting stuck in the flashole that way, and I then use a primer pocket cleaning brush.
May be another quick step but I'm in no hurry, I find the whole reloading process to be a rather fun hobby!

You are correct. Yesterday I planned to tumble for 2 hours and check. However, my afternoon nap intervened and they went 4 hours. I have to admit, they look pretty good. I will adjust my tumble times in the future.
I should point out this was not especially dirty when I started. I have been shooting, tumbling, and reloading the same approx 1,000 rds for the past couple of months.

I have a Midway (May have been made by Lyman!) that is also 30-35 years old. The lower bearing is worn out and needs replacing. Can you describe the motor you received so I might find one for replacement?
Yes, I know that Midway has replaced them but they send an inferior replacement!
I have searched the usual internet resources and can't seen to find a replacement.
Thanks,

Midway sends an entire new tumbler, not a motor.
I just did it a little over a year ago. I'd stopped reloading for
twenty odd years, with a cross-country move, new job, etc,
and didn't know about the recall.
The first day I turned the tumbler on, it ran normally. An hour later I checked on it
and it was seized up and crazy hot. I was lucky I checked it!

If you set your tumbler on a folded towel. It cuts the noise way down.
