Default 200gr JHP in 10mm

I recently acquired 1k of 200gr JHP. All I have shot in my 10mm is 135gr Frangible FN and 165gr JFP/JRN. I have 500 Starline cases that should be arriving sometime this next week. I am wanting to push these at least 1100fps. Except for conflicting data I am leaning HS-6, CFEp, or Blue Dot mostly because I have those in stock and they should be able to make the numbers. Any suggestions on a 200gr JHP load?

My Lyman 48th on 200 gr JHP
800X start 5.9gr 963fps max 7.6gr 1119fps
HS-6 start 7.5gr 987fps max 8.6gr 1126fps ^
AA#7 start 9gr 987fps max 10.6gr 1145fps
Blue Dot start 8gr 1015fps max 9.6gr 1148fps *

My Hornady 4th on 200 gr JHP
800X max 8gr 1150fps
HS-6 max 8.2gr 1050fps ^
AA#7 max 9.5gr 1150fps
Blue Dot max 8.9gr 1150fps *

My Speer manual is too old for 10mm.

Hodgdon Web page on 200gr HDY FMJ
HS-6 max 8.6 @ 1089fps ^
CFEp max 7.1 @ 1123fps
Universal max 5.9 @ 1015fps
HP-38 max 5.6 @ 1011fps

Vihtavuori web has N105 for 200gr bullet 8.2 @ 1111 gr.

I have been loading 200gr JHPs for bowling pin loads since the the early 90s. Used to use AA#7 but found that AA#9 worked better with far fewer excessive pressure signs. If you are shooting a compensated gun AA#9 works much better than #7. I would start at 12gr AA#9 and work up to 12.6gr for 1100fps (load is from Hornady 7th edition for 200 gr XTP).

The only other powder on your list I have tried is Blue Dot but I found it didn't meter as well as the AA powders.

Accurate Arms powders and the 10mm Auto cartridge go together like peas & carrots, or bacon & eggs, or steak & potatoes. To drive a 200 grain bullet at 1100 fps, you will be at or very near maximum safe pressures with AA#7, but you can get 1100 fps with AA#9 and be below maximum safe pressure.

Of your in-stock powders, Hodgdon's 2016 manual has only CFP achieving velocities in excess of 1100FPS (5" barrel).. Another consideration for me with my 10 was overall noise, so I chose a just-subsonic load running about 1080 - 1090FPS.. I used HS-6 with 180s loaded to about 1090FPS.

If muzzleflash is any consideration--as in, will I ever have to shoot this load in the gloom or near dark AND want to be able to see the badguy within a couple seconds after you shoot--avoid Longshot and 800X, two of the highest-flash powders I tested years ago.

Do you have a chronograph?

I have always loaded the 200 JHP XTP over 10.5 grains of AA#7

Chronographed from guns onhand. Average of 2 10 shot strings each

Using 2 Smith & Wesson 1006 - 1089 FPS
From a Glock 20 - 1090 FPS

This is the only powder I have used for the 200s

Remember that published velocities in manuals are seldom from real guns, they are often from test barrels. This is usually acknowledged in the Modern loading manuals

I have an older Caldwell chrony that works fairly well. I will start the quest for Accurate Arms powders. My preferred LGS is a 50-50 chance of having it but they have other powders, primers, cases, and bullets in stock. There are three other LGS on the NE ATL area that between them usually will have anything I need in stock. I should be able to find a pound of AA#9.

I have worked up some test rounds with CFE that I am going to test out this next week. I like CFE for 9mm and low end 357 well enough to go through a pound about every 6 to 7 weeks.

The 10 running 200gr bullets up to 1200fps is the relm of slower powders. Bluedot does well, aa#9 is terrific, lonshot also works well. Not a huge fan of 800x, never got terrific accuracy. Max charge of aa#9, mag primer, 1200fps in a stock g20 or my 1006.

Comin in late here, but you might find this interesting..

200gr Hornady HAP; What I have so far.. - Reloading 10mm ammo - 10mm-firearms.com

I found AA #9 the powder for the max velocity. But the other powders are serviceable as well..

I use 800x not the best metering, so I check every load. Trickle as needed..

I like 800x because if the cup pressures listed are correct, they run much lower than any other powder with the same velocities, and I find recoil is much milder than other powder I've tried.

The Hornady 10th manual shows two loads for the 200 grain XTP that deliver 1250 fps. Both show as max loads.

Blue Dot @ 9.4 gr.

Accurate #9 @ 13.2 gr.

What is your 10mm pistol?

I like AA9 in the 10mm. I loaded some with Longshot, not enough for a good evaluation yet.

This is GREAT info! I plan on getting a 10mm before the end of the year, and hopefully starting to reload for it in the spring. Looks like AA9 is a great powder candidate, and I was thinking 180 or 200 grain bullets. I just need to figure out a way to capture the brass before it ends up in the trees 10 yards away.

For general training I plan on .40S&W.
