Default Load work up

I had acquired some 300gr. Hornady XTP bullets and would like to make up some loads for the S&W 500. I cannot seem to find any load data for the 300gr. XTP bullet like I find for the FTX. Can the same load data be used?

As long as you work up the load properly -- begin with the starting load, then move up by steps -- I see no reason why you shouldn't. Both jacketed bullets, both 300 gr.

NO, they are not interchangeable.

The .500 HDY 300gr XTP is for the 50AE, a puddy cat compared to the 500 MAG.

The 300 XTP does not have a cannelure & is rated to 1400fps max -vs- the 300 FTX which is rated to 2200fps max.

.

I got some at a close-out price a couple years ago & have used them for REDUCED loads in my 500 MAG using Unique, Power Pistol, Blue Dot, & 2400.

They're fine when used within it's limits; not at 500 MAG limits.

I load them to COAL@ 1.910". This places the ogive just slightly below the case mouth then I use my Redding Profile Crimp die to put a slight crimp on the case mouth.

This should give it an ~.003" crimp, which works well with these easily ignited powders, and also helps prevent jump crimp.

Always double (triple) check the case fill level, before seating the bullet, when using powder charges that won't overflow the case in the event of an accidental double charge.

You're warned.

PS: This should be in the Reloading section.

What kinda of charge do you get with Unique?

I pulled apart a Armscor round which had non cannelured bullet and charge of 13.9gr. of something that looked like Unique. I have noticed that the Armscor rounds were a lot lighter then standard 500 mag rounds.
