Using SRPs in place of SPPs
I loaded a few test rounds of .357s with small rifle primers. 33% fail rate with Magtech SRPs. ... in 2 19’s and a 686. I thought I had this primers issue solved, dang it!
I’m gonna try some CCIs next...

As I recall SRPs have a heavier foil and have to be hit harder to get reliable ignition. Never tested it personally. I hear they are very common in .38 super race guns.

If you have or run across some Remington 6 1/2 try those.
Most AR shooters stay away from them due to their reputed ease of ignition.(slam fire)
I loaded .454 Casull using mostly CCI 400 for years. Never had an issue with the Redhawks even using lighter spring kits.

The only pistol/revolver cartridge I use SRPs for is the .357 Maximum and only because the load data calls for one.

I have used Federal small rifle match primers in my 9mm M&P's without problems.

If you have to resort to using rifle primers in handgun ammo be sure to shoot them in guns with a heavy hammer fall . Single Action revolvers and shooting SA will help get you a successful outcome .
Guns that have had light springs installed and those who only shoot double action may be setting themselves up for failure(s) .
I have an old 3 screw Ruger Blackhawk (1971), 357 Magnum , that has a good long solid hammer fall and has no problems igniting rifle primers . I had some 357 mag. rifle ammo loaded with rifle primers and every one fired in the rifle and the BH .
The gun you choose to shoot these loads in will make a big difference.

I second the above post.
Even SP primers have different sensitivity levels for different uses.

I have read multiple times that CCI primers are supposed to be some of the toughest. I haven't tried to prove it though.
I did an experiment recently and found that Remington 7.5 SRP worked ok in 32 H&R out of a Single Six and SP101.

Federal SRP's are fairly soft too. I don't use Federal rifle primers in any autoloading rifle for exactly that reason, but you might give them a try if you can find any.

For years I used the Remington 6 1/2 in .357 Magnums for a CA Target Bulldog as well as in a S&W m13 with no issues . I bought 40,000 of them from the 50's at $2 per 1000 in the mid 70's just because of the price . Didn't even own a rifle then that required a small primer . Don't reckon any of those have ever been used as rifle primers. Still have about 10,000 of them and still use them for .357 in two Rugers .
Some primers just have thicker and tougher cups than others.

I've tried them also, I depends on your gun. Some will hit hard, and some won't. It's a **** shoot.

It depends on your guns firing pin spring, some hit hard, and some hit light.

My 586 liked the CCI SRPs. I’ll try in my other revolvers next week.
According to the info that jjfitch provided, those Magtech SRPs are THE thickest.
