Remember ... panic's and shortages happen every 4 to 6 years .
After this one is over start building up for the next panic shortage ...
Get a number in your head on what you need and how many you need for this shortage ... then prepare for the next election ... Buy when items are available and not too costly .
Take that number you have in your head and ...
Double that amount ... Stock Deep !
Hoarding is the New ...Being Prepared ...
it's now politically correct to be prepared !

Based on everything I have seen, primers are the one thing that just aren't available.

I've cut way back on pistol shooting to conserve SPPs. I've completely stopped shooting 9mm and 32-20. Only shooting some 38 Sp. now and again.
Can't find anyone backordering them right now either.

Not sure I’ve ever heard it explained better. I agree, it won’t last. I only use Federal Primers since I mostly shoot revolvers. After the last “shortage” Federal availability has been spotty at times so I just started buying at shows and dealers. Paid $20/k for some and $40/k for some but $40 is looking pretty good now. Still shooting a lot and am covered for a year at least. When availability picks up, I’ll start over. I agree it’s the norm now. Same as when 22 ammo got short. When it was over I bought at every sale. I’m good for 2-3 years on 22 ammo for me and my 2 sons

Primers have started to turn up sporadically by me so maybe things might be sloooooowly turning around. I've been able to score 3 bricks in the last couple weeks while paying normal prices.

My sources had primers last week and ration them to 100 or 200 primers per customer until they were gone in a week. Prices went from $33 per brick to $60 and $70. They told me that the manufacturers and distributors doubled prices and that will be the new normal. Not so good but I can believe it.

About two shortages ago , when things became available , I learned to not be picky about brand names ... 22 LR ammo , primers and powders ... I started buying anything that was for sale and on a dealer's shelf .
As far as primer brands , I have no guns that insists on only working with one brand of primer ... this leaves my primer options wide open !

You need to not only look but also ask at the retailers. A couple of my local retail places are in fact getting some primers in fairly regular. The ones I am seeing are Federal and they come in a larger box the same size as their shotgun primers. There seems to be 2 small stacks every week or 2 when I check. 1 stack is shotgun primers and the other has been large pistol primers. Most guys don't seem to give them a second look because the box is large and they must just figure they are shotgun primers. I have been able to pick up 12 boxes in the last few weeks (limited to 2 per visit). Besides having a close look, you need to ask. One day I made my usual pass and saw no handgun ammo. I picked up a few things and a guy walked up behind me at the register with 2 boxes of 9mm. I asked him where he got it---duh they were just putting it out on the shelves. This happened minutes after I had made my pass. The girl behind the counter had not bothered to tell be she had 2 cases on the floor but had not put them out yet. So the trick is to not only look but also ask for what you need. On the other hand, this particular retailer has been getting nothing for powder in except black powder, but I still ask if they have anything else. Just because it is not on the shelves does not mean they don't have any.

I'm hoping the current shortage doesn't turn permanent, if you know what I mean.
I live near a major online supplier with a retail outlet. They will usually sell you a small amount but they won't be cheap. Just like during the 22 shortage. Then, a bulk pack of Thunderbolts was $39.99. Seems like they always had the more expensive target grade ammo in stock.

I didn't really "backorder" SPPs but a few months ago a few cases of Federal SPP showed up at my favorite LGS and I picked up what they had available--3K at about $40 per K. I asked them to put me on their call list for more SPP.
So fast forward to today, the one day I forgot my phone at home. I stopped by the LGS and they were busy calling people on their list for the few cases of pistol and rifle ammo they just received (NO 5.56 at all). They also got in a few cases of Federal SPP but I was told they were all spoken for.
Of course, when I got home and checked my phone the very same LGS had left a message for me--they were holding 5K SPP for me until Friday. I had to laugh, then I called them and they laughed too. Did I mention they're my favorite LGS?
BTW, primers were still the same price as last time--about $40/K.

Local store always has large pistol and large rifle in stock, with about every other visit also having small rifle in stock.
I got on a waiting list for small pistol maybe 3 months ago and just got the call day, 1,000 max. It was such a huge relief because IDPA was eating pretty hard into my stock.

I can't even get dealers to call me when a gun comes in that they "put me on the list" for.
Asking them to call me when primers come in sounds like a waste of breath.
