Default Primers

It's pretty tough to find primers right now, but I found a supplier named ZincPoint that has small pistol primers. I have never heard of them before though, having typically used Remington or CCI primers. Has anyone done business with ZincPoint, or has anyone used their products? They only have packs of 3,500 right now, which is a lot to buy if you aren't sure/confident in the company or its product.

On the other side, if anyone knows of a primer source that still has stock, I would love to know! I have been looking for a while now and have not had any luck - I'm assuming most dealers are all out of inventory at this point.

That's a heck of a price to pay for primers. Unless my math is off they're asking $14 per hundred. And don't forget shipping and hazmat fees. I would never do business with anyone who thinks that's okay.

During a previous component shortage I bought 10,000 of those Ginex P1 primers.
No one had heard of them at the time and they were sold as surplus and were cheaper than any others.
They turned out to be good primers made in Bosnia.
Some of my favorites now which is just as well as I have enough to go the distance I suspect.
My testing indicates they are hotter than the CCI and WLP but deliver good deviations.
The packaging is not up to USA standards but the primers are excellent.
But $.14 a primer?* Sheesh. Not a chance unless cost is no object.
Don't remember what I paid but it was less than USA primers were going for at the time if you could get them.
American Reloading was the source and was doing land-office business at the time in surplus powder and these primers.
Think I got the "grey market" CSB-1 powder from them as well.
Their stock is pretty low right now unless you want to play with non-canister mil-surp powder which has always been their specialty.

44 Special:
Starline brass, Speer 200gr GDHP, 7gr Universal, 1.485", 696-1, LabRadar
CCI300.. 728 fps s=19
Ginex P1 749 fps s=17

W-W brass, COP 200gr SCHP, 5.5gr CSB-1, 1.48", 696-1, LabRadar
CCI300.. 742 fps s=3
WLP....... 742 fps s=44
Ginex P1 798 fps s=18

* This is almost entering the same fantastic financial territory I am in when modeling solid gold bullets in QuickLOAD

Thank you both for the responses. $0.14 is pretty steep, but it's tough to find primers anywhere else. I plan to wait and see if I can find them cheaper anywhere else, but thought I would see if anyone has experience with them. Good to know that they are a reliable primer! I will keep an eye out for them at cheaper prices during my searches.

Also, thanks for the heads-up concerning American Reloading. I will check them out too.

Ouch. I'll find a way to reload my old primers (of which I have a large container) before I pay 500 bucks for 3500 primers.

I know, we're about to get the "what the market will bear" lecture. I'm free not to be reamed just because they can. A couple of months back one of my local shops thought a thousand CCI 41's ought to be over $200. The exact same dusty box in the same spot on the same shelf that was under $40 a couple of weeks earlier.

Trying times we live in.

Yeah, it's crazy. I was able to purchase almost everything for my big resupply, but I can't get primers. Wish I could make them myself.

I have enough ammo to hold off the "Zombie attacks" for now
in pistol , rifle and shotgun ammo.............

but it would be nice to see primers on the shelf again, so I could get back to testing loads out for me and his site.

It will pass..............
but I get mad at the money hordes and people that buy ammo that don't even have weapons !!

I guess it is like having "Stocks" and you trade them when the market is up...... ?

I thought $57 for a box of 1000 CCI large pistol magnums was high and I had to buy powder in order to buy the primers. It's all better now, I just ordered 300 .500 bullets. A range visit is due soon, I need to verify a rifle will work.

If any of you have been at this for a while this may apply. Reclaiming primers.

It can be tedious, but I've recovered a lot of primers from previously primed, and previously loaded calibers that I no longer own.

One example, 200 loaded .40 S&W and another 300 primed brass yielded 250 9mm and 250 .38 Sp. rounds.

I hope I never get desperate enough to pay that much for primers.

I remember watching a King of Random video a few years ago where he made impact targets using match heads and strike strips. I wonder how effective that would be in a primer. It should be pretty simple - just need to put it underneath the anvil after flattening out the primer, I would think. Might be fun to try out.

Just goes to show that with certain gun people money is no issue, hence paying $160+ for 1K of primers off Gunstroker when just 8 months ago the average LGS was charging about $35/ 1K . I learned my harsh lesson back in '14 when I had to pay $74.99 for a brick of 22LR Thunderterds so me and my 12 y/o son could shoot. Now i'm deeply vested into handloading and casting. Got enough components to load about 89,000 rounds, and about 900# of lead. Now I laugh at gun panics while many others sat around not purchase planning for the next panic, and here we are and this current one is only the beginning..

I keep thinking Wolf or Tula will come to the rescue with a big shipment of primers in from Russia. But I haven't seen them for sale in several years.

I don’t know if it is true or not but I read on another forum that Obama took them off the market.

Was talking to a local supplier of powder and primers . His supplier told him that he won't be getting any primers until June , at the earliest . Powder and primers are 2 items I have always kept a decent supply of . I encourage everyone , when supplies loosen up to take their " cigar and booze " money and go buy primers and powder . There's no shortage of cigars and booze , it's always available . Regards Paul

Castboolits ... there is a thread on "reloading " fired primers with paper caps ... pretty darn interesting read ... I have a big bag of fired primers too and not going to get rid of them just yet ... the paper cap reloading looks viable !

After the last powder/primer shortage I saw the handwriting on the wall , I've laid in a lifetime supply !
It's going to happen every election cycle ...trust me

Recobs at least has (magnum) percussion caps.
Recob's Target Shop | CCI # 11 MAG Percussion Caps PRIMER Hotter Mix | Recob's Target Shop
They are about $.05 apiece.

They also have "musket caps"
Recob's Target Shop | CCI U.S. Musket Caps 100ct. Tin Primers 301 | Recob's Target Shop
at about $.07 apiece.

Those are the only primers of any sort they still have in stock.
To make sure, their free phone # is 1-800-359-4571

They have been my main reloading store for decades and are a small family owned business in a rural Wisconsin community not far from here.
Nice folks.

I just found an interesting letter written by the people @ Powder Valley about the primer / ammo shortage . They talked about the impact of the virus ( work force shortage) worldwide , not just here . How the primer plant in Muron Russia is barely producing primers because of the virus . The bankruptcy of Remington was also mentioned , as a supplier of primers and ammo . Their feelings is that it's not going to change , get better for a possibly a long time .

Not much, really. It fails to fire or it fires. I would do a viability test though before I load live rounds, just to be safe. I found a video of a guy who reloads his primers, and that's all he uses. The downside, is that about 1/6 fails to fire because you can't get the back of the primer flattened out perfectly once it's already been struck once. They would be useful for target ammo and not much else.

Hard pass - they want too much money for them. I still have a decent inventory and just wanted to top off, but I'm not that desperate.

They were asking about $0.15/primer, which is pretty steep, imo.
