Default Coated Bullets In 9mm

I don't want to confuse the cast bullets in 9mm thread. Does anyone have any experience with coated bullets in the 9?

I am probably not going to be much help here as I have only given coated one attempt in 9mm and my results didn't impress me. I will likely give them another chance in the future but it won't be soon because I had some fantastic buying opportunities in years gone by to stock up heavily on 124gr plated in 9mm.

With that said, I will say that shooting them indoors gave off an aroma of a small electrical fire. I did NOT have any deposits in my bore, I just didn't find the accuracy to be inspiring.

However if it is even a little bit helpful, I can say that I've sent over 200 of them in .357 Magnum, 180 grain at 1,500 fps through a Ruger 77/357 and they are accurate, consistent in velocity and they leave nothing whatsoever in the barrel of that rifle. So far, I really like them in that role.

I have not tried to shot any in a 9mm coated or cast. I have shot cast in 38 S&W and they were fine. I use cheaper plated bullets from Berry's or Everglades for my 9mm, Bought in bulk they are about as cheap as lead would be anyway.

I cast and coat a 124gr Lee RN and a 100gr TC that I’ve used in several of my Sigs and a CZ Scorpion. The RN loads quite short and runs fine with 3.6gr of BEye. I also cast for 357, 45 acp and 45-70. Accuracy has never been as good as plated or FMJ but getting closer and closer. Plus their free. (Outside of labor but I don’t count that since it’s a hobby)

I've shot a bunch of Bayou's 124TC's in several of my 9's (including a couple of Glocks) and found them to be "OK". Of course I'm no Jerry Miculek, but I've found 124 HP FMJ's to be generally more accurate.

Having tried many different types of 9mm bullets, I've also found truth in the statement that "It 'aint the arrow, it's the Indian" when it comes to accuracy. Good luck finding any 9mm bullets these days. -S2

I have a CZ 75B and that's all I shoot out of it. I use coated bullets from SNS Casting. They have been redesigned to fit in short chambered barrels. They are easy to load and shoot very clean.

I shot many thousands of SNS RN coated bullets through various 9 mm pistols with no problem. Accuracy was good and no leading.

My 986 9 mm revolver had leading and accuracy problem until I went with .358 coated bullets. It’s important with a revolver for the coated bullet diameter to be sized appropriate to the chamber throats.

I just got my shipment of Bayou 124 gr 9's yesterday, and loaded up the first 50 rounds. Just as nice as the previous several boxes I have loaded. Shoot clean, accuracy just as good as plain cast lead, less smoke, easier clean up. And, I like the new black cherry color.

I have loaded and shot thousands of 9mm coated bullets. Never a problem. My only objection is the smell when fired; kind of like plastic burning.

I mostly use SNS and Black Bullets Int. I really have a preference for 125 gr. Conical black bullets int. Prices listed always include shipping.

Sorry, never tried coated, but I have tried plated. Don't like them. Always sized at the low end of the spec., providing poor accuracy in comparison.

Hard cast lead, liquid alox lubed, rifle, pistol, revolver - works great everywhere.

I just started using the Hi-Tec coated bullets this year. I ordered 500 from Missouri Bullet Company to test in my 9mm Shield and Glock 48. It went well and no leading. I then started coating my home cast 9mm with Hi-tec. So far it's coming along fine. My loads are a a 124 grain RN at 1100 FPS. Accuracy is equal to FMJ and no leading. It's more time consuming than just lube and sizing but I like the results.

I started using 125 grain coated in 9mm a few years ago. Until that point I used Berry’s Hollow base 115 & 124 plated with excellent results. In the last year I started using coated 250 grain for 45LC and 158 grain for 38 special. When I run out of uncoated lead 45 acp I’ll go to coated for those.

No complaints with coated. One advantage of coated is no leading.

I shoot 115gr RN coated bullets from Bayou Bullets. Easy to load. Economical. I've found them accurate. And when they hit steel they make a noise.

Yep. They stink and flash a bit more than non-coated. They also don't lead up your barrel. They may gum up your dies so clean those those periodically. Not a replacement for FMJ. Cost is approaching FMJ real fast.

You have to remember that the coated bullets start out as Lead bullets and then get coated.

Lead bullets can range from .356 to .358 in Dia and you need to see what will work best in your barrel.......

plus, finding the OAL of the bullet and fps of your load can also
be needed to get the most accuracy from the powders used.

Coated bullet work in a lot of weapons while some don't like them.
Good luck in your quest.

I cast / powder coat and size for my 9mm , 40 S&W and 45 acp . I have found the LEE truncated design molds work well in the above calibers . I also tumble lube them . They seem to run cleaner . Regards Paul

I have been loading coated in .45 for the past couple of years. This past year, I did my first in .38. A lady friend of my wife's wanted to learn to shoot and took a CC class. She could only find a limited number of factory rounds and I reloaded several hundred for her.

I just opened a box of jacketed bullets from Precision Delta, but am thinking about the future. I live about 40 miles from SnS and have picked up bullets for the LGS in the past.

I have about 600-700 rounds of 124 grain polymer coated 9 m/m bullets down range. They are manufactured by Badman Bullets in Oregon.

I have run them through my Sig M17, S & W 5946, and Glock 19-5. No malfunctions and no leading. They are accurate (for me) at 25 yards and have no smell. I always ran jacketed bullets in my pistols due in part to the fact that my employer was paying for them. In retirement I have moved to polymer coated bullets due to cost but still shoot jacketed or plated bullets in my pistols and revolvers when I can. I have noted no discernable difference.

To be fair, this is a small sample, but for my purposes I am sold on polymer.

HTH.

Default Works for me.....

99% of the bullets I shoot through all of my 9mm semis and a carbine are hy-tek coated bullets from Missouri. They are clean, cheap and shoot well. I go through 500 every couple of months. The slight smell is not objectionable, I don't even notice it anymore.

I generally use 124 gr SWCs.

I shoot the Bayou bullets, 120 grain TC in my Sig x-5. Great accuracy, no leading, shoot very clean. The gun club required shooting jacketed or coated - went with the coated as they are more cost effective.

Seating is always critical with the 9, shooting 3.8 BE with a 1.10 seated depth. Works fine in my gun.

The MBC's 125gr conical in 9mm, the 230gr Softball & 200gr RNFP in 45acp have always worked great for me: my comments identical with those before me...

Cheers!

Anything specific you want to know? I have reloaded a fewl thousand coated bullets. I have PCed most but have purchased some, mebbe 1,000 Hi-Tek coated for 9mm and 45 ACP. I've used them in my 380 ACP, 9mm, 38/357, 44 Special/Magnum, 45 Colt, 45 ACP, and 3, 30 cal rifles (308 got red, 7.65x54r got green, and 303 got black). They are clean shooting, as good accuracy as the base bullet, and clean handling. Most of my PCed/coated bullets are loaded with cast lead data and often at the higher end of the lead data.

For some PCing your own can be tedious and time consuming, but for me it was part of my casting, reloading, shooting fun. Learning the finer points about home PCing took a little time (that very fine powder gets everywhere, in every corner of the shop, and it doesn't wipe off your hands with a dry rag!) and gathering equipment may be costly if you buy new. I started out with a cool whip tub, some Harbor Freight powder and an old toaster oven I used for pan lubing. Then, as usual, I started "improving" my coating and bought about 4 different, quality powders, made some coating trays, and bought an electro-static spraying outfit...

Just curious, if I can load coated for less than fmj and still get decent performance, that is what I will do. I haven't cast my own for 30 years and don't see me getting back into that.

I just started shooting HiTek coated bullets this year in both 9mm and 40sw. About 1500 rounds or so. I've used both Missouri Bullet Company and Brazos. MBC are harder, but Brazos is cheaper. I think coated is worth the extra cost.

Its all I shoot in my various 9mm. I make my own but if I buy, DG bullets are very good, good price, quick shipping.

Only problem I've had with leading and Hi-tek was with SNS and Titegroup. Switching to Sport Pistol (or Blue bullets) cleared it up. Accuracy is on par with Berry's.
