Now, that was supposed to be a secret.........

Even Hollywood needs to have enough powder to make "Blanks", for all the movies that they make.

H4895 is a very versatile powder; it's the best I've found for .308 loads using 150-180 grain bullets. It also does well in the .30-06 with 150 grain bullets. The original 4895 was used for .30-06 military loads during WWII. H4895 loads can be significantly reduced for cast cast bullet rifle loads. Many prefer the slightly slower Varget these days, perhaps because its newer and/or they haven't had adequate experience with H4895. Varget's certainly a good powder and remains a close second to H4895.

Love the Gatlin Bros reference, BTW. I got it.

One of the most versatile powder...after Unique.I buy it by the 5 pounder and make darn sure I'm never down to the last one.Very good for 30-06,.308,45-70 and many others.Like always it is only a matter to find the right load for a specific gun which is half the fun.95% of what I shoot is with cast bullets.

....30%. I make a lot of very light loads with it. Fun to shoot. I even use it in .223.

Oh, buy the way. I might have some of that stash you are looking for.

One I try to maintain in my inventory. Probably my "if I could just have one rifle powder" powder. I'm down to about three pounds right now, but have plenty of Reloder 15 and H-4350 to get me by.

I scored an 8lb. jug of rifle powder for $100 a couple of weeks ago when I was working over on the East coast. When Jimmy mentioned 4895, I was thinking thatís what I bought, but after pulling it down and looking, it turns out it is 2495. Still a good powder Iím hoping; for heavier bullets from what Iím reading. I havenít started loading for rifle yet, still practicing on pistol calibers and gathering components and tools for rifle.

4895 powder is not only good in the 308 and 30-06 large case loads......

pour that stuff in a 22-250 case with a 55 gr bullet and it will
come out the end of the muzzle, crossing my chrony at 3580 fps.

A great load for "Red Mist" in the distance.

Varget's big selling point is it's temperature stability. Lots of precision shooters like it.

Still looking for 4895. My buddy loads a lot of /06 for his Garand.

As for Varget...

I'm still seeing H4895 1lb containers locally.

It truly is one of the most versatile powders I use.

It's IMR4064 that's scarce in my neck of the woods.

I recently re-zero'd one of my 30-06 turnbolt using pretting much a case full of Reloader 22. I gave up magnum rifle shooting and still have a few lbs.

I didn't check the velocity, but the accuracy is great.

Varget is my "Go To" for precison .308 and .223. I also use it for efficiency in shorter barrel rifles chambered in cailbers like .243 Win. and .257 Roberts.

We may discover new uses for a lot of powders before it's over.

Like Varget, H4895 is a Hodgdon "Extreme" powder and temperature stable.

Default reduced loads

I use the Hogdon's reduced load formula [starting at 60% of the maximum load] for all my rifle calibers at the gun range, very dependable & accurate.

I love H4895 for 45-70 and 38-55 - one of the cleanest burning powders I know of! GREAT STUFF!

I recall reading an article in (I think) Guns Digest where Bob Bell tested a lot of the original WWII surplus 4895 to see if it still provided expected velocity, accuracy, and stability. He found it to be as good as ever. This was in the late 70s, as I recall. He said in the article that when he'd bought it, it came in a copper barrel. I forget how many pounds originally in the container.
