What is 41 S&W cartridge?
I just bought a set of Lyman 310 dies in the box. The box is clearly ink stamped 41 S&W. Any ideas, thought and the like? Thanks! Mick

Almost certainly. 41 Magnum, ammunition developed by Remington, first factory-chambered revolvers by Smith & Wesson.

I believe they are for a shortened 41 Mag. They would be the equivalent of a 44 Special to a 44 Mag.

I am not sure. I thought the 41 Mag came out long after Lyman stopped making the 310 tool. The 310 tool was an all in one hand operated bullet mold, sizer and repriming tool. A picture is worth 1000 words here.

I would think the question should be "What was chambered in 41 S&W?" that existed before the Tong tool was discontinued.

Not sure what your 310 tool dies are for but it is virtually impossible that they are for the actual .41 S&W cartridge. .41 S&W is a basically experimental caliber for the New Model #3 top-break revolver approximately 1900. There were only two known guns ever chambered for this cartridge, one a double-action NM #3 and the other a single -action NM #3.
The cartridge was one of a series of calibers in .32, .38, and .44 caliber made for S&W by Union Metallic Cartridge Co. (UMC) which used the S&W self-lubricating bullet. The .41 S&W cartridge was never produced commercially.
It is likely your dies were made very early in the life of the .41 S&W Magnum cartridge and are actually for the Magnum. Try a .41 Mag. in the seating die, and if it goes in then the dies are .41 Mag. The .41 S&W cartridge was smaller diameter and the Magnum would not enter the .41 S&W dies.
The shortened .41 Magnum is usually referred to as the .41 Special and was not created until years after the 310 tool became virtually obsolete.

Cartridges of the World only lists .41 Long Colt and .41 S&W Magnum.
.41 Long Colt was introduced by Colt in the Lightning Model revolver in 1877. I think Billy the Kid had one.
My guess is your dies are for .41 S&W Magnum and they just left off Magnum.
Edit: My book might be out of date. If I read my Roman numerals correctly it was published in 1980. Could be some changes occurred in the last 40 or so years.

According to Graham Burnside in the March, 1961 Gun Report, there was also a circa 1867 4-shot .41 that was basically an enlarged 1 1/2 New Model.
Serial number 38 is pictured in the article.
H/T to Gaston the Canadian.

Quite a few years ago a chap on this forum had Starline run off a 41 S&W Special case, basically a 41 mag cut down by 2/10th inches (think 38 Special vs 357 Mag). I was lucky enough to obtain 500 from him, then maybe 3 or so years ago, Starline brought out the regular 0.41 Special case, so I stocked up. As far as I know the the S&W 0.41 Magnum was the only S&W revolver cartridge that never had the "non-magnum" sizing. Dave_n
