Default Got some primers yesterday and have a question

I actually got 2000 Winchester SRPs yesterday. and paid 60 bucks for the 2000. So now I have enough to load all the 223 brass I have and still have three or four thousand SRPs left for other stuff. Get lucky every now and then.
Now for the Question on Rem 6 1/2 primers. I have 3 thousand of them also but have only used 'em for the Hornet but I do know they used to load them in 222 Rem also. Anyone use 6 1/2s in 222 or other calibers??

You might be OK using REM 6 1/2 on a 222 but they are for lower pressure rounds like the Hornet. I have had issues using them on 223 bolt gun and would never use them on a 223 AR. Primer shortages can cause some to use the wrong primers but perforated primers will etch a bolt.

Just FYI, I was looking over an auction listing of reloading supplies and there were several lots of primers, and the 1000 count (a brick) were all sitting at a bid of $175.00 !!!! 17 1/2 cents per individual primer!! That's nuts.

6 1/2 primers are good for the little guys! Hornets and Bees. Some people use them in 221 Fireball, 6mm, 6.5mm, & 7mm TCU and 223 Contender (I'm one of those people). I loaded one batch of 357 mag for rifle and liked them with 4227 & 180 gr. JSHP Hornady bullet.

But if you are going to Hot Rod those same cartridges, you'll want the 7 1/2.

My rule of thumb is 7 1/2's don't like low and medium pressure that is what 6 1/2's are for! 7 1/2's get erratic below 25,000 CUP. 6 1/2's to the rescue!

I was just wondering about using them in the 222 as it is a much lower pressure round than a 223...and I am sure Rem must have used the 6 1/2 in the 222 before they developed the 7 1/2 primer. I have never used the 6 1/2 in a 222 Mag though

I did have a pierced primer once in the 223 using a Rem 700 bolt gun and I was using the 6 1/2 primer . After that I did use the 7 1/2 or CCI SPPs. That rifle shot the Russian Wolf stuff really great. Better than any other FMJ mil spec ammo. Even as well as many of my reloads. Go figure. But put a Sierra 52 gr HPBT in the 223 with H322 and it was better than anything else.

Hey Growr...going to the Billings show this weekend? If they still have it!

I'd be really surprised to see a pierced primer on a normal, safe loading. This is the first I've ever heard of it being dependent on components. But Hey, what do I know?

Here is a rather lengthy narrative that covers just about everything you always wanted to know about primers. It is several pages long!
