I don't know about use in an AK, but I do know that years ago a buddy and I used Sierra and Speer 150 gr. softpoints for 7.62x39 loads in what is now the CZ 527, the mini-Mauser carbine. They worked very well on targets out to 200 yards and deer out to at least 125, which is the longest shot I took at a deer with that load. Since 7.62x39 became so popular, just about all the major makers are producing .311 bullets in 123/124 gr. and 150 gr. weights.
I can also tell you that a hog won't know the difference between the two weights.
