Default Hodgdon CFE-BLK vs 300 Blackout w/Hornady 125gr FMJ

Hey guys,
i really need some help here for a buddy of mine that i`m trying to help.
He cant find 300BO ammo, so we bought the only components we could find.

So my questions are this:
Have any of you used the Hodgdon CFE-BLK propellent with the Hornady 125gr FMJ bullet (#30196)?

I looked up data at Hodgdon, Max Load is 20.0C @26.500psi
But this is for the NOS BT 125gr load, not the Hornady 125FMJ bullet.

Another thing, will the CCI400 primer workout ok with this load ?
There are NO small mag primers to be found anywhere in our area.
With the pressure at 26.500psi, i dont think the primers will blow or cause double fires.
But what my concern is, will the CCI400 ignite this powder good enough for it to work ok (???)
I`m crimping the rounds, so hopefully that may get us a better fire burning before it leaves the barrel.

I made a dummy round already: 2.100 OAL puts it right at the top of the cannalure.
Ran them in the ammo check gauge, perfect. But i WILL do a chamber plunk test later as well.

Thank you fella`s, any help would surely and greatly be appreciated!

I have no experience with that powder or the round, but I don't see any problem with CCI400 primers lighting off that powder or having any problems with only 26.5K pressures. I've used CCI400 primers in 223 with pressures at or above 50K psi.

As for substituting the bullets, you might want to back off 5-10% from the max load to try it out. I take it that the Hornady bullet is a flat base, right? If so, then that's enough difference from the reference bullet to play it safe. With that said, 26.5K psi is very low for a modern rifle cartridge anyways.

I load 300BO, the heavy subsonic loads. Haven't tried CFE-BLK I use IMR or H 4227 in the 15 grain area.

Primer, you should have no problems in warm weather and maybe some trouble when real super cold/sub-zero! (The small rifle mag primer isn't always necessary for 223 and 300 BO is 30% or more reduced powder charge.)

Bullet change, Going from the FMJ to a poly point of another brand won't change the performance enough to notice. Be sure to get your crimp in the Cannalure (if there is one!)

If you already reload 223, you already know what to watch for.

Ivan
