Default New reloader....

But not new to the gouging taking place all over.
I'm just getting started but I REFUSE to pay 300-400% mark-up that some are charging.

I'll wait till I find them at a fair price...and then I'll share with my son and a few lose friends.

Hope you folks are having better luck finding small riffle and small pistol primers than I am.

Well as Scooby Doo says..rots of ruck. I hope you can find some of both primers but in our area here they are unobtainable. I am down to about 6000 SRPs and 14000 SPPs...found a fellow who has 10000 SRPs who is gonna sell me 2000 tomorrow but for 50 bucks each. I am paying with 3 boxes of Federal 550 packs of 22s...I think we're both doing ok on the deal

I haven't had any problem with components because I kept a prudent reserve on hand (I learned a few "shortages" ago). But I usually keep tabs on who has what and how much they charge in hard times. I made notes and even when supplies are good, I won't buy from the gougers (Cheaper Than Dirt is one)

Just looked at GB primer auctions...prices are stupid. Close to $400 per 1000

These days there are 3 distinct groups of reloaders.

A-Crusty old guys who have seen it all before and stacked components deep because they have been through the shortage cycle a few times.

B-The lucky guys still hoping to find components, score a brick now and then at large big box stores because they got there on truck day.

C-Desperate folks paying very inflated prices because in volume, the inflated prices are still cheaper than unavailable factory ammo.

I'm with you folks, this whole situation is making me disgusted with the human race as a whole and ashamed of the 2A "community". People out there just raping their supposed brothers and sisters this way, it's just shameful. I'm sure there are many interlopers and people doing this kind of stuff are just non gun folks here to make money off of peoples fears but still, at least some if not many are gun people who had some big stocks of this or that and they're taking advantage in a disgusting and very shameful way.

Am I a bit too sensitive? Maybe so but it still hurts my heart to see this.

I to, just being who I am and my nature, had a very comfortable supply of just about everything I need to ride this out, though that wasnt my mindset in stocking up, I'm just a bit obsessive that way. Everything except small pistol, magnum and regular, I do however have what I'd term a surplus of CCI41 primers which are basically a small rifle mag but serve beautifully in either capacity so should anyone have some small pistol, especially mags, but need some CCI41s I'd happily trade even, just a box or 2.

So fast forward to today...
i stopped by Sportsman Warehouse expecting the same ol' reply..."No, we don't have any primers."
Instead I get "Yeah, There are some left on the shelf."
Two bricks of Small Rifle Primers without getting raped!

Then...

I get a notification from BassPro that the 55gr FMJBT bullets I ordered a month ago finally showed up.
While waiting for the order to get pulled I strolled thru the ammo aisle and they had lots of 9mm and some 5.56/.223. Since I now have primers I left those for the next guy...just seemed like the right thing to do.

I did snag 4 boxes (2100rds) of 22LR for my son, he hasn't been able to find any of those for quite some time.

Mid-Week shopping for the win!!

Don't hold your breath; I believe the days of "fair price" are gone. Demand drives price, and the demand is waaaaaay up, while supply isn't, and probably won't catch up unless and until manufacturing expands, which I doubt will happen for many reasons, mainly political. It's come down to buying it for the current asking price, if you want it, and if you can find it.

I spent around $100 a month on reloading components for 3-4 years in between the last shortage and this one. I've probably got enough to last a lifetime.
But when this shortage is over then I will likely still go back to buying what I can when I can find them at reasonable prices.

Yes the situation is lousy but it isnt gouging. If stupid people wouldnt pay the asking price, the price would be reasonable. Opportunistic, sure, but most people are their own worst enemy because they dont prep. You better believe I wont get caught short on TP anytime soon. I stocked up on primers in 2013-14. I shoot almost every week since.
If you have a lgs near you, stop by daily. Stuff is coming in trckles but you have to be there. Buy what the store will sell you at reasonable prices. In about 18m things might settle down, then buy 1-2k primers a month, every month. Pretty soon you will have that 2y reserve all of us should have.

I thnk the new normal will return in about 18m. I expect about $40/1000 as the new bulk price. This is certainly worse than 2012-13, that took about a year to start rolling back inflated prices.

You Left Out:

D-Crusty old guys who were too stupid to learn from the past and didn't stock a dang thing.

On the bright side, I just used 50 small rifle primer reloads in my .40 Shield and they all worked flawlessly.

I've seen it before, political unrest, ammo shortages. Then out of the wood work comes the new reloader. Good Luck.

You are getting a deal then. I watched a customer at the LGS pay $90.00 for one box of those Federals. They had a stack of them, and they are all gone now.

I look at it another way.

I refuse to pay those prices.
Let someone else hand their hard earned $$$ to the ammo companies but
eventually it will pass, sales will slow down and in order to pay their bills,
the ammo companies will have to drop their high prices or go out of business, from lack of income.

I have other things that I can enjoy and do with the family until this happens.
Good luck on your search for primers.

I hope you are right. I hope the new normal does eventually happen. But I think that the new normal will not be conducive to our hobby/sport I personally think this covid stuff and the political climate are going to be a life and future altering experience. I do hope I am wrong...one thing for certain...we shall see!! Possibly

I’ve got around 10,000 primers counting 209, lr,sr,lp,sp. Divide that by 200 rds/ month [a 150 rd match and 50 practice rds]= 4 years worth. Will the world be normal in four years or less? That’s the sixty four thousand dollar question.

A lot of people are trying to get into reloading now but many will not stay once the ammo becomes available again at a good price. Until that happens primers will not be back. If someone does not enjoy reloading they will not do it long if they can just buy factory ammo cheap enough. I think we will see a lot of almost new reloading stuff on ebay when that day comes.

Well the ammo/primer manuf arent the problem, its the opportunist looking to make easy money. The cost from the manuf hasnt changed. Its the LGS or the individual selling what they have.
Yes this will likely pass but prices wont return to $25 per 1000. Once cost go up, rarely do they retreat. Hard cost for them will go up; labor, shipping, raw matl, insurance, regulations, its all going up. The days of 1990 $10/1000 are gone for good, just like 25c gas & burger/coke/fries for less than $.

Maybe, but days of cheap ammo are also likely done. Many will, start reliading then stop, true, but dont expect their primers to be sold for cheap.

Since 1990"my resrve has been 10k per sizes I use most. When I get down to 10k spp or lpp, I will be nervous. I shoot 9-10k rds a year, why that is my reserve.

I suspect a big factor in rate of price decline, and how far it goes will have to do with the policies of the new administration, and even rumors about its policies. No one sold guns and ammo in the past 20 years better than the Obama admin.....

I've switched over to air rifle shooting, much cheaper, and you can still shoot a nice hi velocity .22 air rifle in the mean time. Did the same thing in the last shortage.

I can do the same and the nice thing is the back yard works nicely for my .177 air rifle from CMP. A friend has .22, a 9 mm and a .50 cal air rifles and for those we use our county range.
