I still have a relatively decent quantity of primers and powder but I did a search on GB just to see what's going on. I was expecting some high prices judging from what others have said. However, I was floored by what guys are happy to pay these days. I'm sorry but people must be crazy, or far richer than anyone I know. When people are willing to pay $30 for a hundred SPP and over $100 a pound for powder it just seems crazy. Who in the world is reloading 9mm for 50 to 60 cents a round and why? I understand that supplies are hard to find these days but there is a fine line between desperate and insane.

Every time I went to a gun show, I'd walk out with a couple bricks of primers. When Powder Valley had a free shipping sale, I'd buy some eight pound jugs. Everglades was selling 4000 9mm FMJ in a USPS flat rate box? I was in.

I felt pretty silly buying piles of this stuff.

I don't feel silly now.

With all the people out of work, needing stimulus money, going to food banks, collecting unemployment, etc. one would think our economy is in a shambles and we all are going to lose everything.

Our family friend is a real estate agent. The number of houses on the market is very low. He told us the other day he had a small moderate sized house come on the market and within days he had 65 offers. It sold for $50,000 above asking price. (20%)

The people paying the high ammo prices are the ones killing it for the rest of us.

Bottom line- I guess it aint so bad after all.

Funny thing, I recently sold my M&P15 and had some ammo left which I decided to sell. I tried to put an ad in a local paper at 60 cents a round which I thought was not bad considering what ammo is going for these days. The local shopper paper refused at that price (too high) and I had to show them some examples of how crazy it is before they would accept my ad.

Lots of very nervous people who feel like they don’t have enough guns or ammunition/components in these times and are willing to pay even if it squeezes available cash. Sure hope they never need any of it.

Just wait till the anti's really pump up the rhetoric. These prices are on the assumption something will happen. Just reflect on what would happen if they really gain traction against the 2A. That is when I might sell some of what I have at auction.

It may not be the case today but, after those stimulus checks came out, guys were paying anything to get what they needed. Free money so no pain to their regular bills. The demand probably drove prices even higher.

That's about half the price of factory ammo these days, assuming you can even find factory 9mm. I think that answers the why. The range I go to has 9mm priced at $25/20 rounds.

I'm still shooting 9mm that I reloaded for about 14 cents a round and have a good supply but it won't last forever. I don't like where the prices are at but can't say I'd never pay them.

Have you ever bought something because is was so cheap? Have you ever sold anything because you were offered so much ? Both are very satisfying. I opened a retail store 40 years ago and a friend in retail much more experienced that me gave his advice, “buy low, sell high, get cash .

Was in the gun ammo reloading supply business for 40 years tillI moved out here to Wyoming. I even continued selling a bit here. Never have seen an across the board shortage like we have now. When in business never took credit cards. Too much cost off the bottom line. To be honest the profit margin on guns(new) is very low. Used esp on trade-ins is good. I'm glad I am not selling guns now for a living...Ammo either. The appeal of so much profit on stock paid for at the older normal prices would be very hard to turn down. I found the 5m SRPs I had stuffed away. A "friend" offered me 500 bucks for 'em. Still here and staying. I paid 85 bucks for 'em 2 years ago wholesale . But ya have to remember.... can you replace them for that? Maybe never!

Ammo prices are definitely driving reloading component prices.
I was at my favorite local indoor range/gun shop this past week. They had a pallet of Mag Tech 9mm 115 grain fmj ammo sitting right at the door as you walked in. Price: $39.95/box of 50.
SO..if we do some quick math, reloading , even at these stupid price is still half price of this ammo:
Powder @ $100/lb =1.4 cents/grn times 6 grns per load=8.4cents
Bullets @ $20/100= 20 cents
Primers @$10/100= 10 cents
Not counting brass because most of have that.
So you have 38.5 cents a round at these stupid prices, but it is still a liitlle over hailf what ammo is.

I have enough for my needs, but I cut way back on shooting in general. So my supply is good because my demand is low.

The biggest problem seems to be that the manufacturers aren't selling primers, but using them all to manufacture ammunition. With demand for ammo so high, as well as, guns. It doesn't look like any primers or new guns will be plentiful in the foreseen future.

There are times I am glad I shoot muzzle stuffers most of the time. I cast My own round balls, as well as most of My handgun bullets. Have lots of powder and caps. I looked on GB at percussion caps yesterday. OMG, I thought primers were ridiculous. CCI # 11"s at $30 / 100. Thankfully I have Plenty. And BP substitute is sky hi also. I'm just happy I have all I need for what I own.

I was part of a conversation about large and small pistol primers. The other guy just bout Ten thousand primers for 24 ¢ each, 2 cases on a "Buy Now" price off GB. Total was just over $2,500 with Haz Mat.

He has everything but primers to load 9 MM and 45 ACP. His valid question was, "What will they cost in 3 months?"

After Sandy Hook I saw Colt M4 sell for $2000, Bushmaster $1300, PMC 55 grain 80 cents, CProducts mags for $40.

A year later they were giving that stuff away.

Yeah, but the Sandy Hook thing lasted about 3 years. And I don't remember anybody paying anywhere near these prices.

.22 was impossible to find in those days unless you were first in line.

We don't know what the future will be for gun owners, but its a safe bet that the left will act against the industry as they have already indicated. If they succeed in reversing the existing ban on frivolous law suits then that will be the death knell of gun ownership- we will simply run out of ammo, components and repair parts. I've had an FFL for 50 years and I've never been this pessimistic. Things were bad under Bill Clinton but they are likely to be worse under Biden. So, I understand why people are panic buying and it may not be as excessive as it seems.
