Light load for Model 57
If you were to want a light load ( 950 FPS) for Model 57 and were using W231 or HP 38. , how many grains would you load?

7.0-7.5 of W-231/HP-38...
8.0 of Unique does the same...
This is out of a 4" barrel and is the same velocity as the original POLICE 210 LSWC load...

What SuperMan said. I’ve used 7.5 W231 for years with a cast 220 grain SWC (H&G #258, I think). Good accuracy. I don’t recall the exact velocity but I’m sure it’s around 900 FPS in my 4” guns.
(Edit) Well, to my surprise the chronograph data happened to be right infront of me. 972 FPS, ES 13 and 969 FPS, ES 31. Tested twice. 5-rounds each. Velocity was a bit higher than I remembered. Winchester brass, Federal primers.

Would you use Magnum primer for that light load, or can you get away with Standard?

I never bothered to chronograph mine, but 7.6 grains of 231 behind my cast SWCs which dropped at 212 grains/ WLP Primer in all loads
Prior to switching to 231, I ran 8 grains of Unique. This load was chronographed in several 41 Magnums.
All results are the average of two 5 shot strings or more
990 FPS from the 2 1/2" Taurus 415
1034 FPS from the 3" 657
1071 FPS from the 4" 657
1102 FPS from the 6" 57
1096 FPS from the 6" 657
1108 FPS from the 6 1/2" 657 Magnum Hunter
1123 FPS from the 6 1/2" 657 Classic Hunter
1122 FPS from the 6 1/2" 657 Classic Hunter 2
1217 FPS from the 10" Desert Eagle (Bad Idea)
1285 FPS from the 10" T/C
1356 FPS from the 20" 1894 Marlin

F150s used in my handloads. I can’t see any need for a magnum primer.

The load was too light to reliably cycle DEs need full power loads
Plus you should not shoot lead projectiles through a gas operated firearm

No need for a magnum primer with 231. I use Winchester LPP's and they do not even make a magnum primer.

I wanted a 950 fps load with a cast 220 gr. SWC (Lyman # 410459) with Unique powder for my model 58 S&W (see avatar) so mailed the question to Guns & Ammo magazine . Elmer Keith replied " try from 7.0 to 8.0 grs. Unique" ... I did and settled on 7.5 grs Unique ...Perfect ! Shot to the fixed sights , I had found my pet load
If you can ever get some ...try it ...
Thanks Elmer , I appreciate the long ago good advice and I'm passing it on !

Elmers 3 loads for the 41 magnum was 4.5 grs of Bullseye for his " gallery " load (target load ) . His mid range load was 7.5grs of Unique and his top end load was originally 20 grs of 2400 . Brian Pearce wrote that later he changed it to 19 grs of 2400 in a S&W and 20 grs in a Ruger Blackhawk . All above load data was using " HIS " 220 gr. swc H&G 258 . The Lyman design is NOT a Keith design , like they claimed . Lyman designed it and just put his name on it . Elmer sent them a scathing letter . I recently tested all 3 loads and they do indeed shoot POA = POI @ 20 yds , just like he claimed . Regards Paul

That’s the first thing I thought of, not enough to throw the slide back, 1200fps out of a 10” barrel ain’t much like it sounds. I will say on a rest, mine hurts for recoil, free handed, all day with no trouble.
Op, there is a burn rate chart out there you can reference, iirc, 231 is only a couple spots down from unique.
