Does anyone have any ballistic info on these old rounds. Any info on year of manufacture. These were the green box with the black legged tray.

They are the 158 Lead bullets with "Kleanbore" priming. The reason i ask is I got a box from the local gun shop, they were tucked away on one of his racks. I was purchasing a beautiful Model 10 Snub and needed some ammo, this was all he had in 38.

Any way I shot some of it when I got home, they had very good accuracy and having never shot a 38 before did not really know what to expect as far as recoil muzzle flash etc...

Then I reloaded some 38's with 158 grain Speer SJHP and 11.5 grains of IMR 4227, well the difference in recoil between the reloads and that Remington ammo was quite noticeable. I am wondering what the FPS was for these rounds, i suspect they would be considered +P+++ in this day an age.

Thanks for the info,

Ric

If you're saying those old Remingtons felt more powerful than your reloads, they probably were. Reason being probably half your IMR 4227 went out the barrel completely un-burned. That snub doesn't have enough barrel to allow such a slow burning powder to burn enough to really push that bullet.

IMR 4227 is for magnum loads for the most part and can be used in some small bore rifle rounds. It's burning rate is comparable to or slower than W296 or Hodgdon H110.

You'd be better served by any number of powders from Unique slower. TiteGroup, Bullseye, RedDot, 700X, Hodgdon Universal, Accurate #2. All of these will burn more completely in that short barrel to give you more velocity and thus felt recoil. You would get 3 times the loads out of a pound also.

Save the IMR 4227 for the magnum you end up buying. Something with at least a 4 inch tube.

All the Best,
Doug White
