Gents,

I have a bunch of these 310 grain powder coated bullets (no gas check) and I'm wondering about their usefulness in a 29-2 on elk.

Anyone have experience with this bullet/gun combo?

The bullet by design is certainly appropriate for big game...

LEE shows it with a gas check on their website... Don't know exactly how powder coated (sans gas check) would perform. Are your bullets hard cast?

Hodgdons has 300 & 325gr load data, the later for a LFN GC: using 20gr of H110/WIN 296 should deliver around 1200+ fps which, one would think, would certainly be sufficient from a 6 inch barrel. Hornady's Custom ammo in 300gr XTP claims 1084 fps and 782 ft-lbs @ 50 yards: they claim it's appropriate for Big Game.

Depending on your intended range to target a 300gr bullet @ 1100+ fps properly placed should be potent medicine for anything on 4 legs on the North American continent...

Or on two legs!

P.S. Does OR have a dedicated handgun season (or tag) for elk?

My Lyman manual shows six powders from 2400 to H4227........

that will give you 1023fps plus with 39,200 CUP or less.

These are cast relatively soft at about 12. I was thinking around 1100 or so feet per second should be enough to punch a good-sized hole and perhaps get a bit of expansion.

I forgot to add.. no, Oregon doesn't have a dedicated handgun season for elk. I have however been fortunate enough to find a little hidey hole where my shots would be no more than 50 yards. It's very tempting..

I want enough lead to drop that big animal with lots of "Prime meat"....
and not have it run off and then have to try and find it.

Well, it sure looks as if bullet jump might just be a problem in that brass even if loaded (long?) with NITROGLYCERIN!

I like the numbers of my........
140gr Nosler Accubond at 2906fps
180gr Partition at 2660fs or
200gr Boattail at 2570fps ...... (300yds at 2121 ft/lbs energy )
for a 1,800 pound animal or larger, hopefully under 200 yards.

but that does not rule out hand guns or just "Sticking them" !!

The problems with a beautiful bull elk, really start after you recover them!

An ex B-I-L's uncle had a huge bull he harvested in Wyoming in the late 1940's. The old man eventually went to the Happy Hunting Grounds and didn't take his beloved elk with him. The next generation had no place to mount the trophy except the old man's house that was about to fall down. One of the nephews had an addition built on his home, to be a trophy room. It was a 2 1/2 story "A" frame, and the elk barely fit.

The base of the neck was touching the baseboard The tips of the antlers missed the ceiling by 2" in one spot. The bull was mounted in the Trumpeting position! The mount was 14 1/2 feet tall and 7 1/2 feet wide! (the only larger mount I've seen was a elephant, and you don't see many of those in Northern Kentucky!)

There was a second story balcony behind the elk's rack, looking through the rack was like being in a kid's tree fort.
