I have shot a small number of them. I have never shot anything besides paper but I have found them to be accurate with a proper load. They are definitely "decent" and very likely superior.

The HAP version of these is very accurate with the right load. Those just don't have the skives/notches, just the cavity. Designed for accurate target shooting.

That was the bullet the outfit that loaded our custom full power duty ammo used. The XTP stands for extreme terminal penetration. Designed when penetration was emphasized. Wouldn't be my first choice for defensive ammo. When/if they become available, the Sierra JHP would be a better choice.

Is the Sierra JHP the one Sig uses in their V Crown line? Those rounds are loaded stout, but reasonable.

Yes they are a decent bullet for 10mm, excellent, actually. Shoots great in my M610 using a full charge Blue Dot running at 1,280 fps.

I've loaded a few boxes of them, and have been happy with the accuracy. A little pricey for plinking, but good bullets.

My LGS -Reloading store has a couple of cases of those so I'm flush on them. I ordered the XTP'S from Midway ( free shipping this weekend ) I've shot a lot of XTP'S in .357's and .38's but never in 10mm. I would imagine they would work good for FL. hogs

Yep, I use 180s and the 155s. Never used one on any critter, but they work well in my 610, 1006, 1911s, G29 and they’ve been available during the pAndemic. Saw several boxes of 155s and 180s yesterday at a LGS; I also use in my 40 S&W loads. In addition to the 40/10mm, I have used them with satisfaction in my 44 mags and 45 Colt loads.

I have used a lot of XTP's in the .44 mag for big game hunting, as well as a few in .357 and in the .45 acp and Colt. All have worked very well, and they are my go to bullet for hunting. They tend to expand a little less, and penetrate a little deeper than most JHP's.

I've never met an XTP I didn't like. I use them in everything from 32Auto to 500Mag. I buy a box whenever I find them.

Yes and no. Sierra does make the bullets Sig uses, but they label the Sig bullets as a separate item, I believe they use the V Crown term. So it is a Sierra product. The ones I suggested are the standard Sierra product which worked quite well in tissue simulant. Unknown at this time is there's a signifcant performance difference or if Sig just wanted "something different" to differentiate their product line.

The XTP is better than decent for whatever task is at hand. It's a robust bullet often used for hunting. I speculate the XTP was designed for 40 SW velocities as RnD on HP projectiles designed for 10mm velocities appears lagging.

Given the broad range of velocities afforded by the cartridge alone and in combination with various bbl lengths from subcompact to carbine, the 10mm is your oyster. Consider three disparate velocities and resultant effect on the bullet and penetration/game, from low vel 40 SW/minimal expansion to med vel/standard exp to high vel/peeled-back petals. 10mm cuts a wide swath.

The XTP's have worked flawless on three deer I have taken with the 1006 and 1076 smiths.

The XTP is an excellent choice in the 40 S&W and the 10mm. My daily carry is a Glock 20 loaded with XTP’s or Federal HST’s.
I have harvested over a dozen white tails using XTP bullets and they performed very well.

Old Pipefitter - I noticed you mentioned Florida hogs. I am not sure what weights they offer in the 10mm, but I would go with the heaviest version of the XTP. I used a 300 grain XTP in the .44 mag to kill a Maine bull moose years ago, one shot, and it performed well.

The XTP's are proven here in Ohio on our whitetail in 158gr 357 mag in both pistol and levergun. Only bullet I'll use for hunting.

I'm getting setup to load for 10mm and will use the 180 and might try the 200gr XTP's.
Right now I'm using Underwood ammo's 180gr XTP in my Kimber Ultra II 5" barrel and proven they go 1300 fps on the chrono. Great accuracy at 50yds also. Have not taken any game with the 10mm yet but I'm guessing it will be a good performer.

This is a 158gr 357 mag shot from my Henry big boy at 1700fps. Went through ribs of a mature whitetail buck entering and broke off side shoulder and rested between the skin. recovered weight was 138gr.

That bullet looks to be overdriven. Effective, but overdriven. It shows the expected limitations of a bullet that may be used across a broad spectrum of velocities, from a .38 Spc load in a snub to a 357 Mag carbine.

Honestly those loads were loaded for a 6" revolver, Ruger GP100 to be exact. Never chrono'd them in the pistol and if memory serves they didn't shoot too bad. They pattern superb out of the Henry and chrono consistent 1700fps. I agree to an extent of them being too fast for an XTP. However I'm pleased after seeing this recovered bullet from a whitetail. I was using the Hornady FTX Leverevolution's in 357 in my Henry and was not impressed with those at all. On paper and on game. On game that bullet doesn't expand, just punches clean holes through both sides. No game was lost, however almost no blood trail and they went farther than any XTP game we've taken with both handgun and rifle.

The Hornady 30-30 monoflex poly tip bullet is designed with 95% copper and
another agent that makes it harder and to help prevent copper buildup ...
and the thicker jacket will also slow expansion and needs 1850fps to work.

I have not looked into their revolver bullets but they may need a full head of steam to work correctly or
at least be used at a distance where they might mushroom.

To answer your original question about the 180gr Hornady XTP, yes, its a fantastic bullet as is the whole of the XTP line. They are some of my favorite bullets. They are a good defensive use bullet, they are a giod hunting bullet and generally I find them cheap enough for range ammo. Everybody and their brothers have bought component XTPs at one time or another so I see them alot for sale by individuals. Ive even found them at estate sales and even yard sales!

Yes, the XTP is a fine bullet. I have over 20 boxes of 44cal 240gr XTPs, about 10 boxes of 158gr 38cal, about 10 boxes of 200 and 180gr 40cal, all XTPs.

I load the Hornady 180 XTPs in 10mm. I use Accurate #9 for varmint loads and Unique for plinking and GSSF competition loads. These two combos are some of my most accurate handloads in Glock pistols.
