Default Comments on MBC's 44mag 300gr "Hammer" bullet?

I'm needing to buy some 44mag fodder and Missouri Bullet Company has the best prices. The 18bhn WFN-like 300gr hammer looks to be good. But before I buy, I'd like to hear from others.

I’ve used the .45 caliber version of the same bullet. The accuracy was good but I got pretty heavy leading with loads at 1100 fps. Shot cleaner at 1000 fps.

I have a similar bullet mold, I cast with quenched wheel weights. The thing is a flying sledge hammer on steel targets! I lube the unsized at .431" in a Super 14" Contender! and at .430" for my 8 3/8" 29 Classic! I like WW296/H 110.

It is a big chunk of lead, without question!

A WFN 300gr coated vs. a 305gr GC shouldn't be much different: what powders and starting loads were you envisioning? Shooting them from what? Uh, AT what?

Cheers!

P.S. I've been led to believe that a WFN 300gr at 1K is probably sufficient for anything walking on 4 (or 2 legs) on the North American Continent...? At an appropriate range, of course!

For years now all my cast bullets have been bought from the Missouri Bullet Company.

For years now all my jacketed bullets have been bought from RMR.

Both companies deliver a very high quality bullet at a fair price and are very nice people to deal with.

I'd be interested in the coated ones possibly . IMHO MBC conventional lubed bullets are much harder alloy than I prefer & lube they use quite frankly sucks . 300gr at modest velocities will shoot lengthwise thru a ton of pissed off range steer or a bison . I use either a 240 XTP or Nos 240 JSP for deer , bear / hogs an LBT 260 WFNGC . IMHO for 44mag , 240 - 280gr will work for 95% of one's needs , bigger stuff go as heavy as needed for penetration desired . FWIW shorter bullets , like .810 or less seem more accurate . Kinda curious what you're gonna be chuckin' them 300gr cinderblocks at ??

Launching these out of a 329pd. My favorite bullet was a 270gr LBT-style WFN I purchased from Leadhead bullets when they were in business. Now I can't find an LBT WFN fir under 50 cents each - and that is too rich for my blood.
MBC's "hammer" is not a WFN, more like a fat nose SWC. I'm hoping the meplat is at least .350".
I'll run these at litrle over 1000fps with 18gr of Enforcer, CCI350 primer (won't know till I Chrono some but 300gr XTP run that speed).
I like the feel of the recoil pulse of heavy/slower better than lighter/faster.

I see that the 45 Long Colt version is a true WFN.

I like and have been shooting Oregon Trail Trueshot 310 WNFPGC bullets with a big dose of H110.

Exclamation

My perusal of the Ramshot load data for Enforcer would lead me to believe 18gr with a 300gr XTP is more like 1,300 fps! Maybe "Exploder" would be a more appropriate name?

Be CAREFUL!

Check out Matt's Bullets , he has a 325gr WFNGC .430 with a .360 meplat & .340 nose to crimp @ 28 cents a piece , also a 250gr ogival wadcutter that looks interesting . Montana Bullet Works cast the same LBT 260 WFNGC that I use . He hand casts w/ a ladle so more work @ 42 cents a piece . If one does not cast both of these make fine bullets , proper alloys & use quality lube . FWIW add Rimrock Bullets also quality product .

Note the barrel length...
I've chrono'd that load at 1050fps from my 4" barrel.

That 250gr OWC sure looks interesting. Matt's prices are pretty decent and he offers some good designs.

I failed to see that. But, still... "You're a braver man than I, Gunga Din!"

Especially in a 329 PD!

Cheers!

I’ve used them with very acceptable results. Great hog load loaded with 19gr of 296/H110 IIRC. Also makes a great carry load for a couple of 3” 44 specials loaded with CFE Pistol around 850fps
