Default Scored some powder today

Wifey "had" to go to a couple yard sales today. There were a couple of TC Hawkens out front. I was looking at them and the gal having the sale asked if I was interested in any reloading stuff. Not wanting to act tooooo eager, I said I would like to look at it. We went into the basement where she had ammo and reloading stuff a plenty. She told me she had looked on line and had the ammo marked accordingly. When I saw the prices, I politely told the woman that she would not get that kind of money for it selling at a yard sale. I went into a room that had reloading components for rifle, pistol, shotgun and black powder.
Everything she had marked was at or above retail. I found a box of powder that just had old store prices stickers on the cans. I told her I'd do $30 for the box. She looked in it and said she couldn't and I asked her what she wanted for it. She said at least $100. We haggled back and forth and I walked away with 10 pounds of powder for $76.
The great thing about it is that it had 2.5 pounds of H110, a pound of AA No.9 and a pound and a half of Blue Dot. All powders I was running low on to feed my M27 and M29 and my new 1894 Marlin 357 magnum.

So she looked on the NET and priced everything as if it were new? Too bad she is trying to sell it in a yard sale.

You did well with the powder, even before the latest scare. $7.60 A pound are 1980s prices, wow...

Yeah, I happen to know someone who was cleaning out their house, getting it ready to sell. They priced all their yard sale stuff as if it was new. Sold almost nothing.

Default Used Powder

I am scared of used powder. What if ... someone who does not know ... partially repackaged it?

I know a LGS has had a experienced 4 lb jug of Green Dot priced at 100$ for some time. Yes it can be identified by the "green dots" within; Yes 25$ per pound is attractive; But who shoots GD anyway? I don't. But still tempting. Maybe If I had 5k more primers.

I’ve been seeing powder at shows at a little above pre pandemic prices. Did find a sleeve of SRP at a gun/pawn shop that handles my transfers for 4.95. His 209s were 10.00 a sleeve-too much.

Sure, there is some risk, but if you are experienced with powder you can at least tell if it looks right or not. I tend to load a few rounds really low and shoot them out of a sturdy weapon of that caliber as a verification. If it shots as expected then start low and work up as normal.
As to GD, yep, there are the green dots which are pretty unique.
I use GD for a variety of things, works well for a pretty wide range of revolver loads and 45ACP.

I’m with teletech on Green Dot. It works well in both 20 ga and 38 Spl, both of which I have loaded and shot a lot from time to time. I’d have to know the real source/history of an open can though. A friend of mine got a can from an elderly gentleman he thought he knew well… turns out the guy had dumped a bunch of remnants into a can to get rid of them, saying “powder is powder”. Yep, it ended up on the begonias.

Beggar's can't be choosers I guess. A few years ago I was buying a brick of primers (1000) for $40. Looks like a brick is around $200 now. I still have about 15 bricks.

What a difference a few years makes. I'm not sure we will ever see 0.04 primers again.

Green Dot will do anything that w231 can do.

I can get a +P 158 lead out of my snub M49 with it....
and NATO loads out of my 9mm pistols..........
and factory 3 Dram trap loads for my 12 Ga.

"Bang" is a good thing.

My last bricks of cci primers were 30.00-33.00. Once the ammo starts sitting on the shelves unsold the ammo makers will slack off and primers will return. There’s only so much disposable ammo income and paranoia out there. But I see 50.00 brick as the new norm.

GD is a pretty versatile powder. During shortages people discover all kinds of good powders that aren't marketed for the cartridges they load with excellent results. Green dot also works well for a 850 fps 44 mag load.

During the last shortage (2008) I discovered American Select and use it for 9mm, 38 spl. and 45 ACP now. It's a cleaner burning Bullseye.

I won't touch some stranger's handloads or their powder. I'll pull bullets on handloads and dumb any second hand powder on the yard.

Green Dot is similar to W231 and ZIP and can be used in anything you would load with those powders. (with the correct Green Dot load data of course) It is originally a shotgun powder like many powders we use for handgun loading. The only quirk with GD I have found is that with some cartridges it has a narrow sweat spot range. A change of only a few grains could make a good load terrible but not always. It is forgiving in the 45 ACP and 45 Colt from what I see. It's tighter with the .38 Special but not all that hard to work with.

Finding magnum class powders is a good thing but open cans from and unknown source really scares me. I would not use it but that's only my opinion.

I have bought sealed powder from anyone. Have turned down opened powder MANY times. You can't be sure if it is correct or mixed in some cases. I know that certain powders have their own characteristics, but I'm not going to chance it! Bob

Green Dot is versatile for both shotshells and handgun calibers. It's at its best in 20 Gauge and also heavy 12 gauge loads. It is my favorite for loading 9mm, but it can be used in all handgun calibers. Not quite like Unique, but fairly close. Today, I wouldn't hesitate to buy at $25/lb. I have about 1/2 pound left in reserve, not too much.
