how well does it work taming the fireball?

I don’t have a 357 sig but in 38 super there’s a substantial difference. I used Winchester 540 now HS6 for many years. HS6 produces quite a bit of flash in a 5” barrel and heavy loads. Similar loads in the same gun using CFE pistol produce much less flash.

Did a night test on some powers years ago, out of a 6" barrel.

All test had five (5) loads each to see the size and color of the powders.
Even the same powder had different size flames, but it is just the way things are.

Some powdes are short in length while others are longer and the width of the "Ball"
will also shange with the type and amount of powder.

Colors of the flame go from yellow to a deep Red and a mixture of the two
while some powders have "Sparklers" tossed in for an added show stopper.

I agree that CFE-p does have a reduced "Fire Ball" as does the faster powders vs Unique or slower powders.

Most ranges are well lighted, so we seldom get to see the "Fireworks show" but if you see a 41 or larger weapon, you might get lucky.......

Low flash powders are indeed comparatively low flash. But there are so many variables that there is no flash that is consistently predictable.

Shorter barrels enhance flash as do high pressures. A Sig .357 is a high pressure round generally shot from a <5” barrel, so there is almost always going to be flash in dark conditions.

If this question is related to firing in self defense in dark conditions and trying to retain night vision for accurate shooting, eh. The likelihood of taking advantage of such a flash reduction in a situation that is so remote to begin with is, well, remote. There will be flash. It will slightly effect your vision, but not enough for you to be missing with a few incredibly fast shots at close range.

I think it’s worth it to use low flash powder for the potential of a somewhat lower flash, but if you really need almost no flash because of shooting frequently in the dark, then you might want to try a pistol compensator/flash hider as an additional effective solution.

That makes sense CB3. If I have the choice of 2 essentially identically performing powders, and one if "flash suppressed" I would give that one a closer look.

In general I have found the flash suppressing additive does work, some more than others.

Over the years of shooting I have noticed that muzzle flash will be reduced
when longer barrels are used.
My little J frame .38 snub nose lets me see what powders have a fast burn rate in a hurry
and what powders will put on a fire works show for me when I go to a indoor range or have to
shoot at sundown, as well as any "Smoke".

Some powders that have low flash are N320, Autocomp, Sihouette and BE-86 powder.
I will also toss in Sport and w231as a low flash powder if you carry it.

In the 9mm, if you like accuracy WAC is a great powder to test out if you can find it but I have only been able to find CFE-p or BE-86, the last times out.

I did find a section that showed factory ammo muzzle flash on Lucky Gunner
that had lots of great pictures, if you can find it.

Thanks! I do have a few 1# bottles of BE-86, and I was planning on using it for either .357 SIG/Magnum or 10mm anyway.
