Default Old C&H press

Found this pretty cheap, it's all there but I'm not exactly sure what all it does?

I can probably figure it out once it arrives, figured a spare press couldn't hurt.

Thanks for any info.

Not sure if that use the same dies as we use now.

I had an old C-H single stage press that was like that, but it didn't have the built in spent primer catcher.

Mine took modern dies... but it didn't have interchangeable shell holders.

The top of the ram on mine was machined as the shell holder for specific cartridges, and if you wanted to reload a different cartridge, you had to buy a different ram.

If I remember right, C-H did go to interchangeable shell holders, but they only fit a C-H press.

So you might have either situation depending on the age of the press.

My old C-H press that I bought used for a song many decades ago from an LGS, had a ram for .38 spl/.357 Mag case heads, and it's how I started out reloading.

Since I was only shooting .38 Spl. and .357 Magnum at the time, it served me well for many years, until I started shooting other cartridges and I bought an RCBS.

C-H later became Pacific, then Pacific was bought by Hornady.

There were several different types of shell holders from different manufacturers in use at one time. Some snapped in, some screwed in, some were integral with the ram. For a long time, all metallic dies have standardized on the 7/8 X 14 thread (old Lyman presses used a smaller die). Whether yours uses currently available snap-in shell holders would be the big issue. It doesn't look like it.

I don't think C-H and Pacific were ever the same. Pacific was acquired by Hornady, but C-H is currently part of 4-D Dies.

CH4D is still in business and still makes some parts ... the nicest part is a shell holder adapter ... it converts a press so it can be used with snap in shell holders .
They furnished me with an adapter for a Lyman All American Turret that had screw in shell holders and another for a Eagle Cobra 300 that came with no shell holder ( it was lost in shuffle ) .
See if they can help you ... I tried to post CH4D's web site address but it keeps getting re-directed to an envioromental testing site... I don't know why or how to get around these site theives... The co. is CH4D ... see if you can reach them .
Call them if you can't find what you need on web site ... I have trouble navigating it myself ! Nice folks to do business with ...5-Star rated .

Some years ago I picked up a Lyman Tru Line press very cheaply. I already had several sets of the Tru Line Jr. dies I could use with it, but the press took an odd shell holder that I had none of. I found an adaptor on eBay that allowed it to use the regular snap-in shell holders. There is also an adaptor made which allows Tru Line Jr. dies to be used with a 7/8 X 14 threaded press. I have one of those also.

CH-4D is in Mt. Vernon, Ohio. As of 9 years ago they had plenty of New Older Stock, but were not taking new orders, they were booked for years by Uncle Sam!

The Tru-line adapter to 7/8-14 thread is available from Lyman and currently made of aluminum, they may be listed under 310 die adapter, or even a Lyman #55 powder measurer adapter; they all use the same threads.

Their website is working and parts for the old presses are still available. I have several of their presses and use them.

If yours does not have a universal ram then I suggest you order one of these:

Was given the Tru-Line Jr press and several sets of dies a couple of years ago. It sits in my collection of firearms related stuff. Since I have two full sized presses, have had no desires to use it.

I have several of the Lyman 310 sets and handles. I have used them to reload in the field/camp. Handy and different. Antique and nostalgic.

Thanks all, it will be fun to see what it can do, for about $75 shipped, I figured what the hell.

I am going to start reloading 38 special and 357 at some point, it would be good to have a dedicated setup if possible, if not...

I USE their 3 station for my K-Chuk and 22 Hornet loading. I also have an old Herter's single station and Turret (boat anchors) that I do my case forming on and all the rifle dies are in the turret press. CH sent me a shell holder adapter, to RCBS type, for both! Good people do deal with!

I originally learned to reload using a 310 Tool and .38 Special Dies. In a drawer in a tool box on my reloading bench are three 310 Tool Handles, two sets of .38/.357 Dies and one set each of .44 Special dies, .45 ACP dies, and .30-06 dies.

Have a complete Herter's set up for reloading including a Herter's Turret Press. You are very correct about a boat anchor! The only press I have in my collection that is heavier is a Star Progressive.

I'm kind of a 310 junky! In the early 80's I bought a New 310 handle. Made from cast aluminum and poorly assembled (I didn't know any better) They worked fine. I later got a large box of reloading equipment, That I was to sell and split 50/50, I inventoried and set a value of 50 to 75% of then current list price. The owner agreed to the prices and was very pleased with the cash in his hand! In that box were about 20 sets of 4 gang Lyman molds, a dozen or so 310 die sets and 2 310 handles (Large and Small), a few non carbide die sets, and on and on. These 310 dies and handles were forged the blued and I would say works of art! I also picked up to 310 complete loading kits for 22 Hornet. Both sets use the standard 310 die sets but the Forged handles are specifically marked 22 Hornet (these have a extended extractor claw.) The older set is actually marked Ideal and the other set is high polished and nickel plated.

My 222 Remington set is adjustable enough to work with 221 Fireball; 222 Rem.; 223 Rem.; and 222 Rem. Mag.

I have 3 sets 22 Hornet dies, one has a K hand written on the factory lable. I have 257 Roberts, 7.7mm Japanese, 6.5mm Japanese, 30-06, 25-06, 270 Win and 280 Rem.

My 44 S&W set are capable of 44 Russian, 44 Special, and 44 Mag with short OAL. I have done 38 Special and 357 mag on a die set from the 1920's and notes in the box say they did 38 Short and Long Colt. I have 32 S&W dies that I did a test batch of 10 32 ACP's that worked fine. And one of the hard to find 38 S&W die sets! Don't know if fewer were made, or if everybody just holds on to them, but you never see them for sale!

All 310 dies are a neck size only design! On 38 Special the only size about 3/8" at the case mouth, most others are about the same. Some rifle cartridges will work with "Improved" Cartridge's some won't'

I load at least one batch of ammo on a 310 every year. This helps keep me patient when loading one the Rock Crusher or T-7 press, let alone the Dillon 550!

Ivan

PS I'm into Lee Loaders also have around 30, I only ever sold one: The the teenaged son of a friend that had bought his first shotgun. IT was a 410 single shot, I sold him a half pound of powder, 3 partial bags of wads, about 400 hulls and the Lee Loader for $10 ($5 less than I paid for it!) Just so I could help the next generation get addicted, OOPS I MEAN TO GET STARTED!

I have one just like it. I bought it at a garage sale for 5 bucks. It was set up for .38 spl.

I measured the diameter and length of the ram and it was exactly the same as my Lee reloader press. I bought the ram part from Lee for just a coupleabucks. It took only a few simple filings to get the original handle to fit. The top of the new ram fits universal shell holders.

Best 10 bucks I ever spent...

I started loading .45-70 with a 310 tool and dies when I got my first Springfield Trapdoor (actually two of them) back in the mid-1980s. It just seemed more historically correct to load for it that way. I had a Tru-line die set for .222 I bought in the late 1960s when I bought a Savage .222 rifle. When I got a .223 rifle (NOT an AR) back in the late 1990s, I continued to use that .222 die set to load for it. It worked OK, I have loaded thousands of .223 rounds with it. My first reloading ventures in the mid-1960s was with Lee Loaders (pistol, rifle, and shotgun), and I still have several, notably one in .45 Colt I still use if I am going to load only a small number of rounds. Easier than setting up to use the press.

Lyman and Herter's used proprietary shell holders but like the small diameter Lyman 310 stuff they are a distraction in this thread.

During the 1960s and 1970s multiple companies made simple presses that used the same rams. Even though my old blue Pacific C press was originally sold with rams with integral shell holders its rams interchange with my old red C-H C press and with my RCBS Junior O press. Consequently, RCBS Junior type rams were commonly bought separately to enable those old presses to use RCBS size shell holders. My old red C-H C press is aluminum. It looks like yours is cast iron so it might be older. None the less, I'd start with the presumption that is uses RCBS Junior type rams which were easy for me to find used. Ask RCBS what they want for a new one. It's probably not expensive.

I'll measure the diameter of a RCBS Junior type ram this evening. Measure yours and we'll see if they're the same.

Edit to add:
During the 1970s before Dillion's progressives hit the market C-H also sold H type presses that moved 3 then later 4 shell holders up and down at the same time. Except for being blued C-H shell holders were identical to RCBS shell holders. Mine took 4 dies and 4 shell holders. The cases were advanced one shell holder between handle strokes. I still have a C-H deluxe carbide .38/.357 die set that included 4 shell holders.

Thanks, it will not be here for several days, I also snagged a CH powder measure, I am not happy with the Lee measure, it is off by .2 to .5 regularly.

In the mid to late 80's, there was a "Wave" of used single stage presses of the market. My assumption was the WWII Vet that reloaded started dying off ant these presses hit the market. I bought several in that time frame for $5 to $15.

I would use a tool box and a press as the foundation to a reloading kit for missionaries. In Central America, they wanted 38 Special or 44-40 dies, In South Africa he wanted 223 dies, and in Australia he wanted 22-250 dies. Nobody seemed to have a problem getting powder locally (but the price was 2 to 3 times our retail). Primers were the problem everywhere but Australia, but most missionaries could just have them mailed to the local police station and pick them up (usually the fee was very small per 1000)

Lead was very abundant and recyclable, so usually a Lee bullet mold and sizing set-up was in the kit. For my friends with 223 and 22-250, a 1000 pack of surplus 223 FMJ projectiles was in the kit.

I never tried to ship these kits, the missionaries took them with the when they went back.

With finding used presses, dies, and bullet molds I could outfit a new reloader for around $35 (which I swallowed for the missionaries), so I got a number of guys at church reloading. One guy said it was a waste of time and money, until a couple of years ago and he tried to buy odd caliber ammo (32 S&W Long and 38 S&W). So he was interested in a $35 start up kit. I told him he'd have to go back to 1985 to find one!

Ivan

Orange juice press?
Like the C-H Press this is old. But it works better as a Orange Juice Press, than the loading press will.

Look at the link ... you typed in CH4D but now it says "Enviromental Test" ...this keeps happening to me ...
Click on the link you posted and you get Enviromental Test ???
I'm not computer smart ... but I don't like how this is going ...
Next when you click on the S&W forum we will be taken to Save the Planet Land ...I don't want to go there.

Is my computer the only one that diverts the link from CH4D to Enviromental Test ... or does anyone else out there see / experience it ???

No, it is not just you. Nothing nefarious. CH4D number is listed, give them a call and order. That is what I did last time I ordered from them.

You can buy the CH4D 'Universal C-Press Arm'
These are a replacement 'ram' for these older presses that have the shellholder milled into the ram so you had to get a ram for each caliber.

These 'Universal' replacements are made so they take standard snp into place shell holders.

Environment Test

>>>Even though the link says Environment Test,,it'll take you to the CH4D page showing the Universal Ram

GypsmJim posted above:
"...I have one just like it.

Best 10 bucks I ever spent..."

Sounds like a plan!!

I myself have an alloy Pacific C press that uses these single caliber rams. Bought it for $15 with 4 or 5 rams and a set of 50-70 dies.
The rams are common 38spcl, 45acp/30-06, 22H, and one machined out for the 50.
One of the rams looks home-made.
Not to hard to make if you have some metal working equipment.

I use it as-is for some loading once in a while.
Putting any more $$ into it and I might as well look around for another more modern Single Stage press,,but I don't really need one anyway.
Just bought it 'cause it was cheap!

That old C&H powder thrower looks like the daddy to my younger Pacific powder thrower.

I have no problems with mine and hopefully, yours will do a good job also.

Have fun.

So the old girl showed up today, very interesting! The ram is marked 222 Rem and is not interchangeable, the whole ram would have to be changed, I imagine they came in assorted calibers.

The other part of the mechanism is a primer loader, the top tube fills with primers, the pivot swings over and presses the primer into the case after the die sizes the case.

The CH powder charger works great and is infinitely adjustable and once set is pretty darned accurate.

If anyone is into 222 Remington, let me know.

If you go here:

https://www.grafs.com/uploads/techni...df-file/15.pdf

You will find what else will fit that 222 ram. For instance .380 will also work with that ram.

Also, maybe .223 and other AR-based cartridges?

You might be able to use it to load 9mmLuger . Try a case for fit.

You can always have the end milled out with a slot to accept standard Shell Holders. Then hold them in place with a small set screw from the side.

Easy machineing operation for someone with a small mill

There are no common cartridges other than those with the .223-size base (mainly .222, .222 Mag, .223) and the .380 which use that same shell holder.

That would be interesting, it would need to match the primer loader depth.

If you have your own milling machine then it might make a fun project but if you've already put in 8 hours as a machinist or have to hire it out then just buy a replacement ram that takes RCBS type snap in shell holders. Along with 2 rams with integral shell holders my Pacific press came with 2 RCBS Junior rams. Two to three years ago it was $16 O.T.D. I did not dicker. A poster above wrote he used the ram out of one of Lee's light presses that can be hand held. Back in the 1990s I bought two of those. One was free with the purchase of Lee's reloading manual. The second came free buying something else. I forget what. My point is the cost of a ram won't buy much of a machinist's or gunsmith's time.

Back when your press was made rams were not the only part that was more or less standardized. There's a good chance that your priming parts also interchange with RCBS and others.

By the way, a .223 FL resizer resizes .380 just fine. You can seat the bullets but not crimp them with a 9 mm seater. One of the dies for the .222/.223 family rifles taper crimped .380 but I forget which die. The one .380 pistol I owned was a low priority. The seller would not separate two pistols and I wanted the larger one.
