Default Primer Costs

Was at the local gun show this weekend. Primers were priced from $100 - $125 a brick. What are they going for in your area?

That’s good for gunshows and hope for a return to some sort of normalcy. 6 months ago they were $400 a brick. My local guy was charging $275. Now he’s charging $175. Still way too high. I know they’re gonna be higher than before. I’m figuring on $50-$60 a brick. I’m willing to pay that but not happy with it of course. When I start seeing them at that price I’ll start stocking up. I only have 2500 small pistol primer and 2000 small rifle left.

Most of the shows here in south central have bricks sell between $100-150. And there is always a few baiting for someone to bite at $200+. Primers are the TP of last year, they aren't being used up that fast, just being squirreled away for a rainy day.
I got lucky early last spring and bought 5000 plus at an auction for less than $50. Mostly small rifle and have been using them for small pistol with no issues. I use mostly small pistol and large rifle and shoot my rifles mostly to work up hunting loads and sighting in checks so a thousand will keep me for awhile.
I truly am sorry for those casual shooters who are scrambling for ammo. Rather see high priced ammo and components availble in the stores rather than buying it from a scalper at the same price for reasons already stated in this thread.

The last ones I bought (two bricks of large pistol primers), about 2 months ago, were in that price range. It galls me, though, that less than two years ago, what I paid $.12 each for I could once have bought for $.03 each. I have enough primers now, of all sizes, that bullets are what I need to fill up on. Brass and powder I've had big supplies of for years.

Not sure as I have seen none local but they come in stock here and there online at Midway for around $76.00, but them you have hazmat. I think when they get caught up and back in stock we will still be seeing them in the $60.00 range. I doubt if they will ever be $30.00 again but we can hope.

At Akron Ohio gun show today they were $200 per K, they weren't selling. I think they'll be back eventually to $40 per K, except for the CCI white boxes.

Just last week I purchased a brick of CCI Small Pistol Magnum primers for $43 at Sportsman's Warehouse. When they get primers in, (which is sporadic) that seems to be the going rate. Has been for some time. So... What's going on ???

I'm not sure what the prices are near me. I have not tried to buy any and even if I did want to buy I have not seen any for sale. Sorry I can't help.

In Western AZ and into coastal CA:
I still see some listed for $150-180/brick, but those don't seem to be selling. The ones at $100/brick are selling but slowly. Anything much under that evaporates immediately. Small pistol go first, followed by small rifle.

I haven't even seen any primers local to me. I picked-up a few bricks from Midwayusa of LP for around $100 shipped (hazmat fee really kills it). And I have 5K of SP coming from Natchez' today that worked out to about $92 per K.

It wasn't really about the price, more of a lack of availability. Checking several websites several times a day with about a 15 to 45 minute window to get your order in.

I'm done chasing after Primers for now. I should be GTG for a few years with what I have (5K of SP, LP, SR).

With ammo prices being what they are, I've resorted to single staging 9mm & .223. But being retired, I've got nothing but time & actually enjoy it.

I hate to say it but...................

since I like to shoot and test out loads........

if I see a box at $70, I might just be weak enough to reach out and grab it.

( 10/28/2021... did just that ) !!

Nobody here has them, but we are getting a new Sportsman's Warehouse next month, so hopefully things will get better.

Primers have generally been unavailable for a year or two but we're starting to see them on the shelves again. Prices are all over the place; bought CCI 450 small rifle primers for $5.99 a hundred at Bass Pro a couple months ago. LGS has some at $16.99 a hundred. Most places still don't have any. Saw a few boxes of 50 cal primers at Cabelas last week for $79 for 100. Lots more ammo showing up though; 223/5.56, 308, 9mm, 40S&W, 45acp on the shelves at reasonable prices; other calibers sporadically. Bought some 300 Blackout Hornady sub-sonic for $29.99 a box at Bass Pro recently. The drought may not be over but I think we can see rain clouds on the horizon. . . .

$59.99/k seems to be the going rate here, when available. I don't see those prices going down for awhile.

One of my hunting buddies called yesterday from a Cabela's a long ways from me. Said they had small pistol primers on the shelf - Federal was all he knew. They were $60 per the thousand purchase limit. Told him I was good for it. He does not reload so it's nice when a friend thinks of you and bothers to give you a call with some good tidings.

The LGS I use as my FFL has small pistol primers for $70.00 per 1000.
It's the only gun store where I've actually seen primers.

One of my LGSs (also an indoor range) had CCI small pistol primers around three months ago. I think my final otd price (with sales tax) was $66 and a few cents for a brick. Purchasers were limited to one brick a day. I wish I could have made it back the next day for another brick, had there still been any available. I do not reload, but have a friend who does, and we have made a deal for him to load some .38 Special for me soon.

I have not seen any more small pistol primers there since, but they have had few boxes of CCI small rifle primers out recently. I do not recall the price.

Haven’t seen any primers in the local area for a long time. Last time there were any here, they were $100.00/1K for LPP and LRP.

Just paid waaay too much for CCI magnum LRP on GB ... 5 bricks. I'm still working, and one day when I'm not, the going price at that time will certainly seem out of reach.

There's hope. My local Academy got their truck today - Hogdon-branded powders and primers. Beautiful primers, about 8 boxes of Federal small pistol at 59.99/1000 and 10 or so boxes of CCI 500 at 69.99/1000. Also had CCI small rifle and small pistol magnum, about 5 boxes of each flavor. Limit was 1000 so I got my box of small pistol.

I also got in on the Brownells window for small pistol on Sunday evening, so I have 2000 on the way. 75/1000 with HazMat on top of that.

I'm feeling hope that the drought is ending, though I probably just got lucky. Prices are still a bit high, but I was about to have to cut back on my training sessions so I'll bite the bullet at these prices just enough to get me through the next few months and hold off on rebuilding my supplies until the price gets to be more reasonable or I'm convinced that more than 50/1000 is the new reasonable.

I'm about to get my first ammo-drought survivor's merit badge and have now learned the wisdom of stacking deep.

I paid as much as $40 during the Obama years, but only because I only previously "hoarded" a 2 year supply. My (poor) intuition told me that was when things would go back to normal.

My next purchase was $32, and then I stocked up for 3 years.

19 months ago, when the word "pandemic" hit the airwaves, I stocked up a 5 year supply at $29 per brick. 3 days later i checked again and they were sold out. (finally I got good timing)

My next stockup will be when it looks like prices have stabilized (they are on sale), but next time I'll pack in a 10 year supply. That should last me forever....

It's not just the primers, more like any product that is remotely dependent on the metal market. A good example; 20-24 months ago I could buy a truck load (40K) of copper tube for around 59-61 thousand. Now, that same load of tube is in excess of 165K and we would be lucky if it was shipped without back orders. Where it goes from here is anyone's guess. I've been fortunate in getting several bricks of SPP and SPM and some brass in the last thirty days, but as every reloader knows, it's hit and miss.
Best to all

Making just a cursory check of websites for primers, I came across a couple offering small pistol primers (what I am seeking) in stock for 36-46 dollars per thousand. Hmmmm. Interesting that they wanted payment only by Paypal Friends and Family, Zelle, or Venmo. Red flags?

I was just in Kittery Trading Post in Maine. They had 5, 100 count boxes of small rifle bench rest at 10.99 each. That was all the primers they had on the shelf. Tons of 9mm at about 20 bucks a box. I think the Red Army ship landed there because they had a couple of skids on the floor. I wasn't in the market and the prices weren't obviously posted on the boxes so I don't know what they cost.

I found 2 sites that also advertised odd pricing. Googling the company name resulted in comments of a scam.

As they say, if its too good to be true, it isn't.

At $70.00/100, I would have sold some of mine!

Midway has had LPP showing in stock for 3 days straight now at $76/brick.

Encouraging, at least, that they've stayed in stock.

I'm still operating under the assumption that the supply is going to stay sporadic and expensive.

They are so scarce that I haven't seen any for sale locally in better than a year. It's not just primers, but powder too. The other day, a friend of mine wanted to buy a small part for a Remington 870 and Brownells told him that since Remington went bankrupt over a year ago, that no replacement parts are available. It is a sad state of affairs.

Our local stores haven't had any for a long time. I go by every few days and look and ask. They did have and I think still do have small rifle primers CCI #41. It is a hard primer special for rifles. $75. I do hope to see primers back to the $40 or less range. Before the rush they usually ran about $32.

Saw a few LP for 70.00 at the last Raleigh show that I was at. Been messing on my mini mill to build some .020 thick spacers to allow me to use thin rimmed .455 mk2 webley brass with small primer pockets in my cas vaquero revolvers. It does work. Also won an auction on a .45acp Ruger blackhawk cylinder that I’m going to fit to my vaquero as I have a bunch of small pocket .45acp brass too. Doing this workaround to extend my lpp stock as I have twice as many srp than lpp. I think I’m also going to carry a brick of srp to swap for lpp at the next Raleigh show.

On the way back from a pistol match in southern Delaware, I stopped at the Christiana Cabela's. I was shocked to find CCI small primers on the shelves. They had about 40 or so bricks (mostly SPP) on the shelves for $64.99. Last time I saw primers there was before COVID became a household term!

Here is an excerpt of a post I wrote in another thread:
"Once upon a time, the manufacturers who make reloading supplies used to be competitors in a healthy free market economy. Now, a disturbing number of them are subsidiaries of bigger corporations such as Vista Outdoor, who own Remington, Federal, CCI, RCBS, Alliant, and others.
Do you really think they're not gaming the market?
(Hint: look up their stock prices and track their stock price history over the past five years or so, as well as projected earnings over the next few quarters.)"

So, if you're comparing prices of, say, CCI, Federal, and/or Remington, it doesn't matter. They're all owned by the same company. They're not going to let any one of their subsidiaries undercut the others.
Oh, and to add insult to injury, don't forget the video by the CEO of Vista who slammed his customer base, telling them he's "sick and tired" (his words!) of people complaining about shortages.

To make matters worse, this near monopoly favors feeding the supply lines for big box chain stores.
Keep in mind that all these companies, from the corporate holding firms to the retail chains, have much larger financial interests than just the shooting sports. Look how lame Cabela's has become since the Bass Pro merger. And, don't forget (aptly named) Dick's Sporting Goods.
They are going to bleed consumers for as long and as much as they can.
On another level, if these companies do decide to manipulate the prices downward, don't be surprised to see on the bottom of your next box of primers the words: "Made In China".

My local guy has updated his prices to $50/k, but he's also been out of stock for the past 11 months.

A few months ago I started a local (www) forum so the guys could exchange primers and other reloading items not allowed on Facebook/Craigslist. As a result folks contacted me with primers I couldn't use like large rifle. I traded 9mm ammo I had for the large rifle primers (LRP), I then traded the LRP for small pistol primers etc, etc Traded stuff I had like powder, dies etc...I now have 12K small pistol primers (Federal, Fiocchi, CCI, Winchester) I'll use the Federal for competition and the rest for practice. Have plenty of W231 powder as it seems powder pops up occasionally. Didn't want to but I now cast some great bullets.

Again, just yesterday I went to the local Sportsman's Warehouse and they had some primers LP and LR (they get them sporadically). Had but sold out of SP ... $43 for a brick of CCI Large Pistol or Large Rifle Primers. So again I ask, if SW can sell them for that, where are the hugely inflated prices coming from. Midway...$77 a brick??? When this is all over, never forget who gouged you when things got tough.

With the government spending money like a drunken sailor, inflation is bound to hit big time. I doubt we'll ever see primers near the pre-COVID-19 days of around $32.00/ thousand.

Store here got in some CCI 209's, LP, and SP. $5.99 a flat. Limit two. Gone in an afternoon. That's still $60 a Thou, but half of the gun show price.

Same as I saw over here over the weekend. A guy had two 5K cases of CCI SPP for $750 each. I asked if he’d take a thousand cash for both. He wouldn’t. (Glad too...if he said yes, I still wouldn’t have paid it).
