In the 1980's I developed a 180 grain Deer Load for my Marlin 357 1894 C, I used a Hornady jacketed soft hollow point with H or IMR 4227, But I have no record of how much.

It was the most accurate load in the rifle and my 28-2 4"! The felt recoil in my 28's Mag-na-ported barrel was like 146 target WC's in a Model 10!

That's not very specific, but it is worth looking into.

Since it is for SD and not hunting you will not need a maximum load.

Blue Dot... 8.4 to 9.2 grs
2400 ....... 10 to 12.2
H110 ....... 13.9 to 14.2
imr4227 ... 14 to 14.6 ............. should work

People around there must wear Navy Pea coats ?

Have fun.

Hornady shows the highest velocity with 2400 but several other manuals disagree. I think you will get best results with H110/296.

I load 10.5 gr. of Blue Dot. Not near max., but I'm getting around 2" groups at 100 yd. with it in a 1 in 10 twist 6" 686 PPC gun.

I'm sorry but I have not tested these loads from a handgun. I did however test them in a Marlin Levergun. No signs of over pressure seen.

Hornady 180gr XTP bullet
Speer Brass
CCI-550 primer
15.0gr Lil'Gun @ an AV of 1584 fps
Accurate load

Hornady 180gr XTP bullet
Speer Brass
CCI-550 primer
13.6gr W296 @ an AV of 1495 fps
Very accurate load

As usual, check all data you get off the net. Mistakes can and will happen when writing numbers.

I hope this helps a little.

I exclusively use 3N38 in a 3" L frame. I pulled the data from my keester, since there was none for the 180 XTP. My primers are FLAT, so I won't post it here. Low flash, and plenty accurate for SD work.

I figured someone would post a load with Lil'Gun. People seem to love or hate this powder.

I would not use Lil'Gun in a revolver because of the excessive heat it generates and the Freedom Arms report of forcing cone erosion. It does however shine in a levergun and a few rifle cartridges.

The heat it generates in a revolver is extremely high from my own experience. I posted the load because I have the data but was sure to say I use then in my Marlin.

Loaded some 180 grain Hornady XPT bullets with 3.5 grains Bullseye.
Hornady Web Site gives 937 FPS for this load.
Have a Ruger SP-101 .357 with a 2 3/4" barrel.

Jimmy, IMO Bullseye is way too fast a powder for a 180gr bullet in a .357 Magnum case. You really should use at least a medium speed powder like Unique, Power Pistol, True Blue and the like. You will not get close to that velocity at all in a short barrel revolver.

Why a 180gr bullet in a short barrel revolver?

+1 on the bullseye powder being light in fps.
A 357 revolver with a 2.5" barrel and a 160 gr JSP bullet gets..........

Bullseye........ 912 fps
2400............ 1081 fps.

Things get even worst with a bigger 180 gr bullet !!

2400 is your friend with ANY Magnum load.

My Ruger SP--101 .357 prints low with 158 JHP bullets.
Changing grips was no help.
Trying a heavier bullets hopefully will raise the POI.

Maybe you can add some weight under your barrel..........?

There is Meadows industries that has 3 & 8 oz weights for shotguns, that might work.
If interrested their phone number is 888-686-8043.

The only other option is changing out your sights or lear how the move the front sight around
for different impact positions.

With fixed sights all you need to do is change your POA to adjust the POI. That is standard practice with fixed sights without having to change anything else.

Changing POA is SOP with fixed sights: bullet weight, bullet design, different powders, different loads, even the differing manufacturer's performance with seemingly identical ammo probably requires a routine POA adjustment...

Cheers!
