Default Primers and Powder Oh My!

Today at a gun show in Pasadena Texas I found three bricks of CCI small pistol primers for $90 each, and three pounds of Unique powder for $35 a pound.

I know I overpaid for the primers, but these are the first ones I have seen for sale in over a year except for the black market prices on line, so I jumped on them.

Why did I buy three bricks? Because he didn't have four.

I’m seeing a lot of IMR powders at my LGS. Good prices on those. Primers are non existent or too overpriced

Smile Powder

Gun Powder must be getting off loaded from those
Cargo Ships off shore.

Found Powder at several stores this week. Got a
pound of Alliant Reloader 22 this morning.

There was RL powders, Unique, Red Dot, Bullseye,
Mag pro, Accurate and some others. IMR 700X
at the store. Another Store had Accurate #9 and
two different VihtaVuori powders.

At another Store found CCI primers, $10 per 100.

A friend and I went to three shops in a nearby city that I’d never been to. One had a pretty good supply of Accurate powders and some Winchester and Hodgdons. I had been looking for Accurate #2 and bought some to try in 38 spl. No primers but they had been getting some. Plenty of factory ammo though.

Must be getting unloaded because midway had red dot, blue dot, unique, rl10x, green dot,pp2000, and be-86 on Friday. There had to be a bunch of each one as well because they lasted until the afternoon, not the usual 34 seconds.

Shotgun/pistol powder is high, but I feel sorry for rifle reloaders, $270+ Per 8lb for nearly anything not 50bmg is ridiculous. And that’s anywhere online. I’ll hate to see what varget goes for when it pops up after it’s hiatus.

Oh yeah, there’s a couple popular items in my area, way too expensive though.

I see a fair amount of powder available now at $30-40 a pound in retail outlets. Primers are still scarce and expensive. I would not pay $90 per hundred for primers, but then again I still have a decent supply from before the plague. If you needed them and you were wiling to pay the price, you are just fine in my book.

Exclamation Primed

Primers are a weird commodity.

Reloaders, Hunters, and Shooters will spend thousands of dollars
and expend tons of energy on Vehicles, Gas, Insurance, Guns,
Licenses, Gun Vaults, Shooting Items, Scopes…….you get what
I’m talking about.

But, the little old Primer adds very little cost to the
reloading of Cartridges. Pencil it out.
Bullets the same thing.

I’ll keep stocking up and horsing even in these times.

It’s funny

I think it evens out to a "reasonable" price.

The price of the powder wasn't all that bad but those primers, wow.

Like you said though, you need them so your options are limited and so are primers.

I agree. Thankfully I was stocked on components and even shooting several hundred rounds once or twice a week, I’m good for a couple of years. Today at our club, we did some figuring on cost of 38 and 9mm. Most of the volume shooters have gone to coated lead with the majority buying from Brazos. Cost of 115gr is around .05-.06 in 9mm and around .07 for 38 wadcutters. Even with primer cost based at $100/k you can keep cost around $10/box if you pick up brass. Even if you pay .05 for brass, you are around $12-12.50/box. I would hate to pay $80-100/k for primers but when you do the math, it still allows shooting to be affordable

I'm not buying anymore primers until they hit $40/1000. It may be awhile but that's OK. I have 20K and that should last me until production catches up.

When they hit 40/1000 I'll buy another 20K. There's no expiration date on a brick of primers.

I agree, $40/K is probably my limit too. I don't need any right now but I do see my stock dwindling and it's starting to make me nervous. Gone are the days of $20-$25/K.

I went to a gun show last Saturday. One fellow had one box of 1,000 WLP primers. He wanted $200.00! Needless to say, I wasn't interested in even looking at anything else he had for sale. I was surprised to see reloaded ammo for sale. I would never buy a stranger's reloads. And of course there's this: Is a person who reloads ammunition required to be licensed as a manufacturer? | Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives

It's funny you said that because I was about to reply saying exactly the same thing. I bought CCI rifle and pistol primers in March, 2020 online at $28 a brick. I realize that everything goes up, but $40 is my price point.

I'm just putting the retailers on notice. Homey don't play those games.

The actual cost to retailers from distributors has only gone up about 20% in two years, if that. Same with ammo.

I base that on information I get from someone who buys ammo for a large county sheriffs dept.

Retailers can sell it for 100% more because people are quick with those credit cards.

I've heard things like that, though I really don't know what's true or not.

Back in the ***** days when we were getting screwed before, one company stood out among the rest. I think many, if not most of us in the know, vowed to boycott CTD and we told all our friends as well. Since they are still in bizness, I guess we didn't succeed. Regardless, maybe now we need to ferret out the bad ones, or at least advertise a LOT to support the good ones.

One company comes to mind. I have doing business there for 40+ years and absolutely love them. I see their current prices are, what I would consider gouging, but at least not as bad as some. I just don't know what to make of it....

If you think primers are going back down to $40/1000 I hope your young enough to wait 50 years. Have you priced copper wire, lumber, meat, fish, etc.

I agree with Beemer-mark, $40/1000 primer prices are unlikely ever again. We have inflation that may hit double digits in the not too distant future. I just don't see all this inflation magically going away and prices going back to 2019 levels.

When you have nothing to sell you sell what you have at a price that you can keep staying in business or you go out of business.

Occasionally you get lucky

Summer 2020, Covid panic underway. Guy behind the counter at Academy said he had some powder they were clearing out. I got 3 pounds of CFE and 2 pounds of BLC2 for about sixty clams. Never used it before but it works fine for .223.

Brownells has pulled a sneaky little trick. I was checking on primers and they have CCI small rifle primers. To get them you buy 2 - 1000 bricks for $200 and receive a $75 gift card. Sounds ok at first but they’re inflating the price of primers plus making their markup on the merch you buy with their gift card. Win win for Brownells. Sneaky!!!

Waiting 50 years and expecting it to go down to $40 is idiotic. Even at low inflation it will be as high as $100, but at today's rate it could top $300.

Naturally, none of us can predict the future. A $40 price point signifies a 43% price increase. Personally, I think that's enough excess profit to make. At the $90 quoted, that's a 300% screw job.

I saw that yesterday. I didn’t bite. But the good news is they have some for sale. Now we just have to wait for the price to get right.

I have seen Midway USA with primers in stock a number of times lately. They had small and large pistol primers yesterday morning. They are $75.00 a brick. Of course then you have hazmat shipping so you would need to buy a few to get the price down. They go fast so you need to be on the notify list and act fast when they are available.

Yesterday in SW Washington, I found CCI and Remington primers @ $5 per 100, limit 200 of each type per customer; another local store had powder @ $45 to $50 per pound.

Just picked up a pound (all they had of it but had a fairly good selection of others) of A-2400. $27.00 for a lb. Yep I bit.... 1 lb. at a time now.

If the primer manufacturers follow P&G's lead, they will start packaging the primers into bricks of 700 for the old brick price.

Checked two local stores for Unique yesterday. Still nada. One did have a single 8 pound container of Bullseye. I only make two loiads, and only use Unique. Like to keep things simple. Will keep waiting. I'm on the "notify me" list at a couple places, including Midway, but no luck so far.

Today I was working near a gun shop I go to when I am in the area, they mostly cater to the trap gun folks. And I mean high end trap, some of the shotguns they have for sale go for the price of a new car. They also carry some primers and powder for pistol and rifle. They have by far been the most reasonable priced during these hard time as any one could ask for. A couple months ago you could get CCI 400 for 35 a brick. The last couple of times I was there I picked up 8lbs. of Leverevoluton for 155.00 and today scored an 8lb jug of the ever elusive Winchester 231 for 166.00. I originally went in to buy some Winchester 244 in a 4lb jug, the girl behind the counter said that she better cross that off the list taped to the counter. I started looking at the list and saw the 231 on it and asked about it because it was not on their website. She said they didn't get very much of it so it wasn't posted. I got the last one they had. I also stayed at the Holiday Inn express and played the lottery today.

These folks show that the gun shops are a major part of the high prices we pay today, these folks sell for reasonable prices and still make a profit. You just have to keep an eye out on their website for when they have product.
