Can I substitute Winchester small pistol magnum primers for standard small pistol primers in my 3.0gr Bullseye and 148gr wadcutter loads?

When altering the primer in a handload, the standard recomendation is to back off to at least 10% below the maximum listed in the manual and work back up slowly while watching for preasure signs.

Yes you can. That is a very mild load. Much has been written up on this in Handloader and other gun magazines in the last few years.

As posted above, be careful in your loading practices, but switching from a standard to a magnum primer in a load that mild, will have more affect on accuracy, than on causing trouble with pressure. That is only because it is a mild load. I have read several studies that show a bigger difference between brand of primers, than between magnum and standard primers when it comes to pressures.

If you were working with top end, or near top end loads, I would be much more concerned than with your listed load.

The magnum primers might cause enough change to distort the 148 hollow base designs, and affect accuracy, but you will have to try it to find that out for sure.

Each individual handloader is responsible for following safe and proven practices in pursuing our hobby.

If there hollow base WC I'd back down 1/2 grain and work back up.
If there DE WC I'd go head with what you have.

Thanks guys. These are DEWC bullets. I appreciate the info as I'm getting low on standard SP primers and have another thousand SP magnum primers I can use until more standard primers become available.

Hold on a second. I'd be a little afraid to drop down to 2.5 grains. Isn't the recommended load 2.7 grains? Those of us who are really daring have jumped all the way up to 3.0 (usually to make M52s cycle dependably.) Its a modest load by anyone's measure.

Interesting discussion, I was given this link from a question I had on a previous post...

I've got a line on 5000 Remington 5 1/2 (Magnum) Small Pistol primers, and I'm looking to substitute them for the regular SP primers (because, of course, I can't find any...) for loading in 9mm w/ 115 grain FMJ and LRN bullets. I'm loading with W231; do you think I'd be good with a reduced load with the Remington SP 5 1/2s?... Or, should I just wait it out and find some regular SP primers?

I appreciate any feedback from folks with experience substituting Magnum primers for regular primers in SP. I don't want to let the primers get away if I can use them w/ 9mm(I'm not loading any magnum calibers right now...).

Thanks

Hi dmar,
I use them for a wide range of 9mm loads.
If it is what you can get I would (I do) use them. I doubt that you notice much difference with the exception of the near max or maximum loads.
I'd develop a load like you would with any other primer and you should be fine.
Prior to these I had a ton of small rifle primers and I used them in any and all kinds of sp loads with out any problems.
Good luck and be careful.
Mike

Would the same hold true for CCI small pistol vs. CCI small pistol Magnums? I have 200 small pistol primers left but 2000 magnums. The ability to use magnums will keep me in .38's for a while...

My normal practice loads are 158 gr LSWC over 4.5 gr of Unique or 4.3 gr W231

Anybody use magnum primers loading .40 S&W currently using HP-38. I see that there are a couple of powders for .40 that require magnum primers so I may just try to get one of those powders but if I can use the HP-38 and magnum primers I will do that. I just bought the .40 so I haven't even got a load worked up but I am starting at 4.0 grains HP-38 under 170 grain LSWC, the max for this load says 5.2 grains but I will probably end up somewhere between there.

So anybody here use the magnums in .40?
