Default Winchester 45 ACP FMJ-FP

Couldn't find 45 ACP brass at resonable prices anywhere, so I bought Win USA Ready in a 500 round case for $28 per box, less than the cost of US-made brass, from a vendor on GB. It's here today, 12 days after order, lot LP162, and is the first of this I've seen with copper-colored LP primers. They've only made this a couple of years, but it's great stuff (or the first batch I bought in 2020 was), FMJ-FP, code RED45.

Anyone else used this?

MODS: If this belongs in 'Ammo,' please move.

Winchester changed the primer color on shot gun primers every time they changed the compound, I bet these are eco-friendlier than your last batch! But, That doesn't mean they shoot better or even as good! I had some of their first "Lead Free" 45 ACP 230 JFP. out of my best 1911, they were trash!

Since I have 500, I'm hoping they are good. At least I'll have brass!

All the brass for the rifle calibers I reload started out as loaded factory ammunition, except for a box of 500# 5.56 I bought way, WAY back when...

When it was CHEAP & available!

Cheers!

P.S. Remember when you could easily find PRIMED new brass for sale?

This is a new product from Winchester and I have not had any in my hands, so I am having to go on what I can find on the old interwebs. It appears to be the same bullet as the Speer Lawman 230 grain TMJ load. The online reviews of this new product seem to be very positive, many remarking on the accuracy of this ammo.

One of the most accurate factory loads I have ever used in 45 ACP was some Speer Blazer 230 grain TMJ ammo. That stuff was every bit as accurate as my own 200 grain LSWC "match" reloads. Those TMJ bullets have a copper plating that is thick enough to prevent shedding, but still soft enough to allow to conform very well to the barrel's rifling.

I see new brass on gunbroker. New Starline is $250/1,000. That's $12.50/50. Lots of once fired at half that.

But I imagine after you buy equivalent components to load it all up you're a lot closer to break-even.

Guess we are lucky. I was at the pistol range yesterday, shooting 45 ACP and 45 Colt A gentleman that I know shoots a M1911 every Friday. He shoots 100 rounds of factory ammo and gives me the empty brass as he knows that I reload I always take it. The guys at the range saw me counting the empty 45 Colt brass They asked me why, and I told them I wanted to make sure I had it all (all that I started with) The next thing I know, the range officer comes over and hands me about 100 empty case of 45 Colt. He said it was laying on top of one of the barrels of empty brass that the shooters leave behind.

Most of my guns wouldn't be familiar with factory ammo.

Unfortunately the public range in shoot at never has brass on the ground anymore. Several years ago they required all shooters to take their "garbage" with them. They eliminate the garbage can so you can't find brass there either. Years ago you could look into the can and see full boxes for rifle ammo cases just laying there just shot. I got many of my 30-06 cases from once fired cases in the box. That is all gone now.

I stopped going to a certain public range when they made asking others for their brass a no-no. I informed them the brass doesn't belong to them until the owner dumps it into their buckets as a donation. Until then, it's owner's choice who gets it. Since then, I've moved to a privately owned, open-to-the-public range who just asks that you clean up when you're done.

I've not had any problems with a range keeping my brass, whether it hits the floor or not. If I brung it, it's going home with me...

The public range I spoke about above is on and run by the PA game commission. They now require a yearly fee or a hunting license to use the range. I understand that because the upkeep is paid for from the hunting license revenue so those who don't hunt should contribute to the upkeep. It's only $30 a year or a $22 haunting license.

Being a ol Phart...........
I get to shoot at the county rifle range for just $5 a visit.
I have not checked into a yearly this year, however it is a little early to
go out there, for me......... maybe around May .......
or if they are still open ??

The custom indoor hits me for $20 plus targets, while a little farther south of town a low profile range gives me s/s & Military rate special at $10.

Not a bad price for a indoor range vs driving 22 miles to the county outdoor range with just cement tables and stolls and flying brass from AK's.
