Primer Prices
There are virtually no primers available in my area at stores. Just see them at gun shows and they are asking about $1.00 a primer/$100 a package. What are they going for in your area?

That is just not right.
Sorry that it is that way out there, where you live.
Good luck on finding them.

you mean $100 for 1000? Currently I've seen em at shows for $100 to $150 per 100; 8 months ago they were at $250 to $300 per 1000.

I've seen one chain store with $4.10 per hundred (if I remember correctly), but one local small shop guy claimed his cost was $6, but he'd give me a deal at $8. I'm not going to pay scalper prices, so I'll hold off for now.

Everyone should “hold off” - or at least buy an absolute minimum amount til the crazy prices blow over, but that’s JMHO. This primer shortage/scalping business is really a drag.

I bought a couple of hundred LRP at the gun show for $10 per 100. Just to reload a couple of hundred 7.62x39 brass I got. Not buying more at these prices unless I absolutely have to.

It's the same way here in Central VA. All the local stores are saying there is no end in site.

I stocked up in 2014 and 2016. Bases on my shooting then I was/am set for life for rifles. 1 to 3 years of shotgun is normal and 2 to 4 years on handgun. Covid had curtailed most of my shooting, so a current shooting levels, I'm good for life all around, but hope to change. 10M -15M is a normal year on shotgun, 5M-7M is normal for handgun a 1M-2M is normal for rifle.
Locally, most small stores have zero primers of any kind! Those that do are at $75 to $155/ 1000. There is one store that has all anyone could want at 4x to 5x pre covid prices. That is why their shelves are full.

In upstate NY my LGS says they haven't received a shipment in over 6 months. He's the guy I usually buy from.
A month ago I was in Cabelas and they had 2 bricks (1000) of CCI LPP at $60 a brick.
Last month's gun show had 400 tables and I only saw 2 bricks of pistol primers. One guy wanted $100, the other $120.

Can't recall where it was I was listening to talk radio like I do every day (I'm retired) it was a gun show on the radio I heard there was only 1 one primer manufacturer left in the US, thus doesn't surprise me as a mechanic I've known for years there was only 2, two companies that made coolant if you're old enough to remember VHS the same facilities also manufactured VHS tapes so that should tell you when this happened if you're old enough to remember. At any rate one of the factories burned to the ground, suddenly a gallon of coolant went from a couple bucks a gallon to 7-10 $ a gallon and video tapes became scarce..... so back to primers, according to the radio program and primers 1 one primer manufacturer in US and ALL FOREIGN PRIMERS PROHIBITED FROM ENTRY IN US. Is it true all I know is primers are scarce as hens teeth .

There are plenty of primers around me if you want to pay $100 to $150 per M. That's why there's plenty around. People buy just enough to keep shooting. You can buy a truck load on gun broker if you want to pay. I think part of the reason you don't see a lot in the LGS's is because they are subject to the same market forces we are. They don't want to invest a lot in inventory only to get stuck with it when the prices drop. Once we get past this supply chain issue and the manufactures catch up with their NATO, police, military ammo commitments, we will see a return of availability. You won't be paying $35 per M like before the apocalypse but I don't think it's unreasonable to say we will have $50 primers.

Been seeing some new primers for $8 per sleeve. Mostly small rifle. New large rifle is practically extinct. Most of what I see at the gun shows is old stock. Even the small family run shops are taking in and reselling older packs of primers. I bought 1000 Winchester magnum LRP for $60 two weeks ago at a small show and that is the cheapest I've seen any thing in the past year. I image the older stuff is from the hoards of us older geezers who've passed away. Widows cashing in on their hubby's hobby an such.

The only primers I have see on a shelf locally in the last 20 months, with a single notable exception, have been at the local Bass Pro where they were getting something like $79 for 1000 CCI #450's.
Over Christmas I did visit my parents in Wisconsin and found some CCI #41's for the same price. Of course that was also all they had on the shelf and they didn't expect a steady supply any time soon.
In normal times I usually put in an order for ~15k primers in November to get setup for next year, and add what powder I expect to use to only get charged the HazMat fee once.
These days I've been forced to pay $79-$99 to get the things online, being limited to one or two thousand, and dealing with multiple shipping charges and fees. I'll admit that the higher priced ones are always match or bench primers that I would normally never spend the extra money on, but in the present you have to do what you need to to keep loading and shooting, and it's still cheaper than buying factory ammo.

The only place around me that even sold primers was the Bass Pro. They don't even have a shelf space for primers or powder anymore.

Friend of mine went to a gunshow last weekend .Walked by a table that that had CCI 400 primers for $100/1000. He was in need and offered the guy $75(pretty much the going retail price). The guy said $80 and my friend started to walk away and the guy called him back to make the sale at $75.

Look how far we have fallen when paying $75 is considered a win. Very sad for sure.

I haven't seen any primers at all. I haven't been shooting much nor have I been reloading but I still have a good supply of both commercial ammo and reloading components.
I just read a report that 5.4MM 1st time gun buyers in 2021 following up 8.4 MM 1st time buyers in 2020. Ironically, I think this is a good thing, but bad timing.
FWIW, I still believe this is a supply and demand issue and will normalize. Primers will be the last thing that comes back. I am seeing more ammo availability albeit at still inflated prices.

I won the lottery a couple weeks ago and found a LGS with SPP (Winchester) for $80 / 1K, limit 1 per customer. They had a limited selection of powder on the shelf. I bought my limit there as well.

My question is. What would you be willing to pay for 1000. Or, what is the absolute max. you would ever pay for a 1000 before you were totally out and had to stop shooting. Because of the way the conversation is going, I'm thinking on one on this site is totally out of primers. If you have say, 10,000 to 20,000 would you be willing to share and at what price?

Luckily, I have a small stash. Not really intentionally, but it’s just the way it worked out.
Just as an aside, when I first started reloading, in the 70s, primers were $7.00/1000

Not user friendly
I’ve been through several of these shortages and
learned my lesson. I’m good on Primers and all.
I know one thing I’m not sharing. The biggest
reason is that you don’t know what the other
person’s intent is; use them as intended or
turn around and resell them.

That close to 15 million new buyers, plus all the second, third, etc time buyers.
Just using 15 million and assuming the advice they get is “a box of practice ammo and a box of self defense ammo,” but half cheap out and only get a box of practice ammo, that’s 1.25 BILLION primers, bullets, cases, powder charges… No wonder there is a shortage of components!

I have a decent stash as well, not from hoarding but by my making a decision to have 10k each of spp and lpp in my personal inventory maybe a year or so before this latest shiattshow started. I still buy a 1k package once in a while, but not very often anymore. If it wasn't for my decision i'd probably not be reloading and maybe even shooting anymore.

Large pistol and small rifle are here. 8 cents each. Down from
a dime each this time last year. How many do you want?
I've been using the small rifle in several hand guns with heavy
hammers. They run but need segregating so they don't mix with
the guns with light hammers.

For me, a hundred bucks or less is a buy, though I'm reaching a level where I might lay low.
I've said it before - we are one stoopid stunt, political or otherwise, away from ammo and components drying up totally for a very long time. Or longer.
Don't forget to inventory enough powder to match your primer stock!

Chemical plant explosion in Bhopal, India caused that massive price hike in antifreeze prices. I was managing an auto parts store at the time, and remember it well.

I follow these threads with interest but for informational purposes only. It’s been well over 6 months since I last bought primers… Federal SP at what I considered an inflated price of $41/thousand. Will shoot from my current stash for at least a couple of years with possible exception of shotgun primers… they seem to be gone for now and I have less than 2000 on hand.

And I thought we were being gouged for the cost of primers.
A few years ago I could buy 1000 of any Federal or Winchester primers for NZ$37.50/US$25. Then overnight the prices shot up.
In the shops we are now paying around NZ$100+/US$70+ per 1000, and in 2018 I contemplated bringing 5000 or so home with me, but couldn't get around the prohibition on shipping by air. I now have a contact who can get all I require of Winchester primers as NZ$60/US$42 per 1000.
I have enough to keep me shooting in .45acp, 9mm and .38 Special/S&W for the next year and consider myself lucky.
