New Territory for me. Need input.
Been shooting and reloading for the .41 Magnum since the mid 1980's. Always focused on 6-7.5" barreled hunting pistols for hunting game. Fell in love with a friend's "belly gun" (Retired Highway Patrolman) who carried a 4" on duty for years. So I looked for a year and found a pristine S&W Model 58 with a 2" tube, parkerized and mag-na-ported already. Have ordered a XS Big Dot front sight and have a D&L fixed rear upgrade for my Model 58. Not my everyday CCW pistol, but sometime it rides on my hip. Looking for an all around defense load trying to take into account all the variables (short barrel, muzzle blast, stopping power but NOT overpenetration), etc etc etc. Please limit responses to actual loads you have actually reloaded and used in a comparable firearm. Thanks!

Most of my .41s have 4" barrels. I have two go-to loads for carry. Hornady 210g XTP's w 10gr of Unique is around 1100 fps. With lead bullets 210gr w 7.5gr of Unique is under !000 fps.
IMO it is plenty of power without being unpleasant to shoot.

Of course you know that a 2” model 58 is a custom gun and of course a pic of it would be of interest. I agree with tt66 that a lead 210 over Unique in the 6.5-7.5 grain range is all you need for SD.

Hogdon Longshot. 10 grains with the 210 Hornady XTP and standard primer. Around 1,300 fps or a bit less with the snubby. Standard primers.
Worked well in a M58, 57, 657, and Henry lever gun in 41 mag.
Regards, Rick Gibbs

If muzzle blast is an important consideration then CFE-Pistol comes to mind as it's flash suppressed.
Handloader #324 listed CFE-P @ 9.0gr with a 210gr jacketed bullet at 1052mv from a 6" bbl, 9.5gr @ 1099mv. He shows a max of 10.5grs @ 1214mv, if you want higher.
I've shot 8.9, 9.2, & 9.5grs from my 7-1/2" M657 and my 2-1/2" M357NG & grouping was excellent in both, particularly with the 8.9grs, & no flash.

The Winchester Silvertip 175 gr is about the only bullet I can think of that is designed for self defense. Might have a time finding them. The factory ammo is 1250 fps so might be a bit much in the snubby.
Looks like you will have to test it yourself in a 2 incher. Should be an interesting project to tackle.

7.0 of Unique over a cast lead swc has been my standard for many years.

This is my Pet Load for my model 58 41 magnum ( my avatar)
It was given to me when I requested a good general purpose , all-around load with cast bullets from Elmer Keith .
" Try from 7.0 grains to 8.0 grains of Unique under my 220 gr. cast SWC bullet ."
Elmer Keith
I tried 7.0 , 7.5 and 8.0 grs Unique ...
...the model 58 and I both liked 7.5 grains Unique best.
Pet Load is 7.5 Grains Unique with :
Lee 195-SWC - 195 gr. SWC
Lyman 410032 - 210 gr. SWC
NOE 412-215-WC - 215 gr. WC
Lyman 410610 - 215 gr. SWC
Lyman 410459 - 220 gr. SWC
The most accurate of the bunch is the NOE 215 gr. Wadcutter .
It's not designed to be loaded flush and the exposed nose seems to help accuracy .
The model 58 is my "night stand" and it stays loaded with the NOE wadcutter loads .

Thanks for all the input
Read and reread everything. And LOTS of Googling. As soon as I get the new front sight in from XS and my reloading bench excavated sufficiently I hope to work up a load with some 215 gr LSWC I have put back. Shooting for something in the 1000fps range. Will do a few, shoot them and evaluate. I see no need to burn a lot of powder out the end of the barrel for no real upside. Also have doubts that any JHP or JSPs will do much in the short tube velocities BUT may load a few and shoot them into a barrier of some kind to see. Mostly start somewhere, document and experiment.
