25-20 Question
I cannot find a source for 86 gr 25-20 bullets. I have some 100gr lead flat nose, however. Could I use them? Can't find any loads for them in either of my manuals.

The heaviest cast bullet I can find load data on is Lyman #257312 and it's weight is 88 grains ... 12 grs. too light .
This is in Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 3rd Edition .
Lyman 4th Edition has one bullet a 85 gr. RCBS ... 15 grs. too light .
Not having any heavy bullet 25-20 loading experience ... I don't have a good answer . Maybe someone who has the computer Quick Loads could run the numbers and suggest a powder & starting load .
What powders do you have on hand / can get ?
Gary

My .25-20 is a Winchester 1892. I've loaded and fired cast bullets from 65 to 95 grains without significant problems.
My 1892 Winchester limits cartridge overall length for feeding through the action, which can be a problem with some of the longer bullets. Not all .25 caliber bullet designs are compatible with the .25-20 cartridge.

Thanks, Gary. Right now I'm looking at going with 4.5 grains of Unique or Bullseye.

Thanks, Lobo! I'm loading for a Savage Model 23 bolt action, so I've got some wiggle room on length.

Missouri Bullets lists an 85 grain RNFP for the 25/20. I’ve used them with complete satisfaction and their delivery is usually quick. Check them out.

It's just one of those low demand items that no one is going to make in these hard times. Could be another year or two. I've got 75s (Speer) but still low on primers so I'm saving those for better times. I think I used to have some 86 but used them up. Keep checking in on some of the small casters, they may be willing to make some. The ones mentioned above may be your best bet.

From Lyman 3rd edition Cast Bullet Handbook:
88gr lead starting load 4.2 gr Unique 1270 fps from rifle.
88gr lead max load 5.5 gr Unique 1555 fps from rifle
I only load 32-20 and I really like Unique.

Rimrock Bullets also has 85-86 grain cast bullets for the 25-20 in stock and they make very good bullets.

4.5 grains of Unique sounds like a good starting point to me also .
Lyman 50th Edition shows a 88 gr. JHP with a starting load of 4.5 grs. Unique ... taking into account 1.)the extra 12 grs. bullet weight and 2.) the fact that lead bullets are easier to push down a bore ... 4.5 grains Unique sounds logical ... and safe .
Good Luck !
Gary
