I just received an email from a vendor. We have primers!
A paltry $120 will get you a thousand. Oh, you want the Federal?
A mere $130. .22 Long Rifle anyone?

MidwayUSA has them right now at $89. They’re CCI 550. They have them regularly for that as does Brownells with a limit of 2000. Natchez has had a brand I’m not familiar with with a limit of 5000 for quite a bit cheaper.

Last time I bought primers in the fall of 2019 paid $126 for 5000. Still haven’t opened that one yet.

Similar for me, 5000 primers for $105 at a gun show 2018. I bought many more than 5000 but not because I knew a shortage was coming but because the prices in stores were going up. I was being cheap but it saved me in the end.

There are a couple of stores in Arizona selling primers for $60/1000.
At gun shows they tend to be around $90.

I was told the reason for the price coming down is now there is a glut of factory ammo, especially 9mm FMC, available in the stores. I believe this because I see a lot of ammon on the shelves in the stores selling in the $20 - 35 per 50 rounds.

I know a couple of guys who have stopped reloading due to the availability of 9mm and the low price. To them it is about the same cost as their reloads and a lot less hassle.

I can sympathize with your friends. I got into reloading years ago as a way to save money. I don't shoot anything exotic. Just a few pistol cartridges. I can buy 9mm for about the same price as what it would cost reloading with the new primer prices. I'm using up a bunch of SRP's I bought a few years ago but never got into rifle cartridge reloading. After that, if I use my primers it will be to load premium ammo that would cost a lot more in the store.

For those that bought 5000 a couple of years ago for a fair price, good for you. For those of us that shoot much more than 5000 a year, not much help. I'm retired and my main interest is in shooting and reloading. I will search out the lowest price possible but I'm not going to stop shooting just because it costs more.
